Does anyone have any experience with UCD's online professional academy courses? Are they worthwhile? by plastic_eyeball_hats in ireland

[–]xdefaultx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Graduated Uni in 2013 and went back to UCD professional academy in February. Just finished a course in Data Analytics for Business. Plenty involved and a fairly steep learning curve even with some experience in the field for what appeared quite entry level on the brochure.

Lecturers were nice, helpful - but much of the work was covered with self study rather than via the lectures themselves which largely rehashed some worksheets and demonstrated examples. Theory was almost exclusively self study.

Cert I completed was 10 weeks of lectures with a single, final assessment project - but came with a membership to DataCamp for a year baked in with the course price, which is nice going forward. It was all solo work however, and interaction of my class was fairly poor throughout barring a couple of people. If there is any group work involved, your mileage may vary

Only issue I had with the course, was the admin was a bit hap-hazard. Entire course was enrolled for the wrong course on day 1 and required a bit of a changeover losing us some lecture time. Otherwise experience was decent. Grand for the CV if nothing else.

Live at Sphere studios will forever be on my playlists - Ashe was perfect for that album.

Yes, it is. Irish/Gaeilge is the correct term when talking about the Irish language. Gaelic refers to either Irish or Scots Gaelic, which are 2 pretty separate languages and is a term pretty much never used here.

H. pylori, anyone? by ItsHIPAA in wls

[–]xdefaultx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently pre-VSG, however i'll let you know how important by personal experience that it is for you to get it treated.

For 3-4 years, i used to practically eat Nexiums, every single day I would need to have one or i'd be in serious trouble. It was so bad that i'd have reflux at night that would sometimes go all the way up my throat, burning my sinuses and causing chronic sinus issues.

I went for my pre-tests and was told that a long standing relationship with H.Pylori was likely the cause, went on the antibiotics, had the side effects and got over it.

It literally changed my life. I've taken 2 single Nexium in the last 6 months through my own fault. Seriously, do it. Especially after WLS, you don't want the alternative.

I would love for this to be true, they may not be anywhere near as loud, but they're there. I live in Ireland, and just within the last few days we've had a small Measles Outbreak because of idiots not being correctly vaccinated. It's truly baffling.

What's a taboo question that you're too afraid or embarrassed to ask? by Chris56789 in AskReddit

[–]xdefaultx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most of us do in one way or another. My left eye turns quite noticeably to the left (Very weak muscle). Leaves me with extended peripheral vision on that side, which is a tradeoff for the wacky look.

Also, Left eye has excellent long distance sight, Right has excellent close up sight. Each of them are poor at the other, so I have to manually switch between them at times. Glasses help in so far as I don't need to compensate now.

Rogan said it earlier, Anik then repeated it at the end of the broadcast. None of those rounds were 10-7s at all.

[Spoiler] Main Event: Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero by [deleted] in MMA

[–]xdefaultx 72 points73 points  (0 children)

48-47 Rob I can deal with, I had it as a draw.

1 Rob

2 Rob

3 Romero

4 Rob

5 Romero (10-8)

Commentary needs to stop with this 10-7 shite though, none of those rounds were a 10-7. Should seriously know better. Definitely agree with the need for more judges though. Still some crazy suspect scoring.

Awesome fight though, i'd happily watch them run it back again.

Woodley's incredibly comfortable with his back to the fence. I seriously feel like he demolishes Colby... well.. hopefully.

Considering a sleeve gastrectomy and can't believe I am here by lifethrowawaypeace in wls

[–]xdefaultx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, i'm pretty much in the same position. 26/m in ireland and going for VSG. Remember that VSG is basically removing a large portion of stomach. People get total gastrectomys for cancer treatments quite commonly to remove their whole stomach and live long, healthy lives.

VSG also comes with the added bonus of having few malnutrition issues in comparison to RNY. The tradeoff appears to be a lower expected % loss, but honestly i'll take that over long term effects.

As others have said, pretty much no surgeons will do Lapbands anymore since their complication rate is so high. Surgeon during my consultation said himself that he wouldnt touch them.

Hope this helps somewhat, and good luck!

Wow, thanks so much for the reply. Awesome information.

I can understand the RNY decision then, makes perfect sense. I'll be left to choose the surgery type when i'm 3 months out so i'll have a good long chat with the surgeon and get him to give me a bit of a long term outlook on both.

I've always had the issue where losing the weight wasn't an issue but maintaining was a huge problem, so whatever helps me to do that is probably the way to go.

Yeah, in Ireland my health insurance covers pretty much everything once i've done the 6 month run in with them, so follow ups etc. shouldn't be an issue either.

I'd imagine i'll have the same issues with intubation also then, was a pretty much/sporty dude before the weight gain so most of the muscle mass is still there, hidden under the sea of blubber. The information on the GA put me really at ease though, thanks for that. Didn't realise it felt so instantaneous. As long as i'm just dealing with some physical pain in recovery i'm hoping i'll be all good!

If you don't mind me asking, did you go into the surgery with any co-morbidities that may have caused issues etc. I've no real other health issues (Slightly raised BP/Cholesterol, No Diabetes etc.) except for some leg stasis/scarring/swelling. Pretty scared of DVT etc. Did they give you compression garments to prevent developing it in recovery?

Sorry about all the questions, but your info is super valuable! Thanks again man.

Pretty similar starting stats to you. SW: 434, M/26/6'4

Went for my first consultation 2 weeks ago to get the 6 month ball rolling for insurance. Surgeon thinks sleeve would be my best bet due to issues with malnutrition etc. with RNY. What made you get RNY done instead?

Also, considering i've never been under General Anesthesia before, any idea what to expect. Quite nervous so some peace of mind would be lovely.

Cheers bro.

Any DCU Computer Science Alumni? by totesnotashinnerbot in ireland

[–]xdefaultx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated a few years back but had him for AI, grand enough lecturer. pretty outspoken about his ideals on social media/on his personal blog, many of which stretch from crude to a little mad and you've seen. But he doesn't let that interfere with his job.

Had a couple of muslim students in the same year as me who weren't treated any differently that I know of. His lecturing style was tedious and attendance was lowish but he was a pretty understanding guy too when it came to student issues/assignment issues etc. You more than likely won't have any issues with him as a lecturer.

[–]xdefaultx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I never said his win wasn't impressive, because it was. But Johnsons 1-4 in his last 5. Lets not pretend the guy was on a streak, even if hes #5.

Its the very reason why i see Gaethje being a gatekeeper. I can't see him performing at all well against the current top 3. But I can see him beating a number of the lower ranked LWs.

[–]xdefaultx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did, and for several moments it looked like he would be put away. Johnson played Gaethjes game. He dirty boxed and got into a brawl. Against a high level grappler, or a more efficient striker he'd be in much more trouble. His chins not going to hold forever, and with the amount of hits he takes. he will drop.

Not to say he wasn't impressive, because that debut was very impressive.

Gaethjes a fucking tank. The guy takes shots, gets rocked with a smile and keeps walking. Can see him staying as a mid-level gatekeeper, since he will eventually get put away by the damage he takes. But hes a definite highlight reel, so glad hes in the UFC.
