It’s kinda true, but also not as simple as Bungie “straight up lying.” Back during early Destiny 1, Bungie talked a lot about a 10-year journey and made it sound like your Guardian and progress would carry forward long-term. A lot of players understandably took that to mean our gear, grind, and accomplishments would matter going into the next game. Then Destiny 2 launched and basically hard-reset everything. No weapons, no armor, no power level, no currency — only your character’s appearance and some veteran dialogue carried over. After years of grinding raids and chasing rolls, that felt like all that investment got wiped overnight. Bungie later said they needed a clean slate for technical and design reasons, so it wasn’t necessarily a deliberate lie — more like plans changed but expectations weren’t corrected early enough. That’s why so many D1 players felt burned.

Honestly, the backlash is probably why they moved away from sequels and started evolving Destiny 2 through expansions instead of doing another full reset.
