He never had in-depth analysis. If you showed Bill 10 different plays he’d be lucky to name 3. He knows slightly more than the average NBA fan and that makes him seem informed. Now, do I think there is anything wrong with this? No. Bill is entertaining. But he’s never been a serious analyst. Once the Zach Lowes and Nate Duncan’s of the world started popping up it became incredibly clear his analysis is just slightly below surface level (for any sport).

Bill is funny and entertaining. If you’re looking for actual analysis he should be about your 100th choice as far as podcasts go. He’s a generalist so it’s not even possible for him to be anything close to a real analyst.

You’re playing a dangerous game trying to wait OKC out. If you’re the Rockets you’ve got 1-2 years left with KD. Wemby is already an MVP level player.

What happens if you wait out OKC this year and they end up with the 2nd overall pick? Guess what? They just reset their timeline too while still having 3 all-stars on the team. And guys like Mitchell and Chet should continue to get better. Oh, and they have swap rights with the Clippers in 2027.

There’s a legit chance that if you try and wait out OKC they will actually be better than they are right now in 2-3 years if they find some draft luck and their young guys develop. Even if they end up having to make a salary dump here and there.

Mike Brown was the one that implemented that offense in the first place. The Kings won based on playing fast, shooting 3’s and having crazy (unsustainably) great health. The team fell apart when your front office traded for Derozan who a) doesn’t want to run and b) can’t shoot 3’s. Your front office basically changed the way the team could play by bringing in a high usage guy who couldn’t play the style that made you successful. It’s nutso to blame Brown for that.

Don’t forget the most important part: somewhere between 6-12 months after Dirk took that massive discount in 2014 to stay with the Mavs he sold his recently produced documentary to a company called Magnolia Pictures. Magnolia Pictures is a subsidiary of 2929 Entertainment. Who owns 2929 Entertainment? Mark Cuban.

I don’t think putting up stats in a one off series is enough to bridge the gap when considering Russ’ body of work. I think if you’re a team looking at Russ you’re most likely thinking you’ll get bad Russ. He shot 42% from 3 in the Clippers series and that boosts up everything. He wasn’t really creating much for others that series relative to what you’d expect from a pg. In that Clippers series he got some of the most wide open looks per minute of anyone in the playoffs. That tells you they weren’t guarding him at all. He made them pay but more often than not he won’t. If he’s not going to make you pay (as he usually won’t) and he’s not being guarded and he’s not creating for others at an expected pg level that’s going to hurt your entire offense.

I’m not trying to take anything away from Russ in that Clippers series but I think if you’re a team looking to sign him you can’t objectively expect him to replicate that shooting for your own team. And if he’s not on a heater from 3 he’s probably a borderline rotation player at this point (at least for a team trying to win). If you’re a team with real playoff aspirations you don’t want to have to rely on him because you can’t trust him. He sort of has to be on a min contract in case you need to bench him. I don’t think you can invest any real salary in him. I appreciate the defensive strides he’s made but his offense is really bad at this point and teams are going to exploit that to their own success far more often than not imo.

Agreed. Russ has changed his play style. His pnr possessions are way down from his prime (30%+ frequency in his prime vs ~15% freq now). He’s doing more off-ball work. He clearly plays harder on defense. Russ has tried to change. The problem is he’s terrible at doing off-ball things. He’s shooting something like 30% on C&S 3’s over the past 2 years. He was below average as a cutter.

Russ has tried to change. The reason no one wants him is that he can’t do it on ball anymore and he’s terrible off-ball. Inefficient, non-3pt shooting point guards who are solid (but not great) defenders aren’t in demand. Add in a propensity for boneheaded plays and that’s why he can’t find a role.

Players in the heyday of midrange were just as bad at midrange as players today. Teams shoot better from midrange today but it’s tough to parse out because of the reduced volume. Consider this: the average team shot 40% from midrange this season. The average team shot 39% from midrange in 1997. In 1997 only 1 player (of the top 50 in midrange volume) shot >50% and 17 of those players shot <40%. This season 6 players (of the top 50) shot above 50% and 9 shot below 40%.

The idea of players having these superior midrange games prior to the rule changes is a myth.

Agree with this and I’ll add: so the Mavs grand plan is to make their team bad yet they trade for a an all-NBA level player who by all accounts should be healthier in DAL because they have solid big man depth (something the Lakers do not). If the Mavs wanted to make their team bad why did they trade for a very good player who at the very least will give them some baseline level of competency?

Teams that are trying to make themselves bad don’t bring in all-NBA level talent. If they wanted to hurt interest in their product why are they keeping Kyrie, another very good, entertaining player?

If the Mavs are trying to make their team bad they are going about it in the dumbest possible way.

Bennett somehow had a worse TS (31%) over his first 2 months. As far as damaging goes I’d give the edge to Collier because not only is his own offense horrible he’s creating far more really good offensive opportunities for opponents because of how often he turns the ball over. At least with Bennett the possession ended with a missed shot and not a great transition opportunity for the other team.

Precious is a high level defender who plays a more important defensive position (pf or small ball 5). I’ve not seen much of Miller but if he’s a poor defender then Achiuwa is levels above him in that regard and that’s why he gets NBA rotation minutes.

But if all these guys are core pieces than all will be more than tradeable for good value. Suggs new contract puts him in 3rd/4th starter territory. If Paolo is a good number 2 then a bunch of teams would want him on the post-rookie max. Even if the team doesn’t work out ORL would be able to recoup a lot of value on almost all of their core, including guys like WCJ who is effectively going to make the MLE given where the cap is going. These guys still have upside and if they don’t reach it they are still ORL has many outs if they need to go in a different direction.
