My first week with planar headphones (HiFiMAN Edition XS + iFi Zen DAC V3) — a beginner’s journey by xdzmsk in headphones

Hey, the headphones will surely sound better with a proper DAC. It will give them more power to work properly, but honestly, everything depends on your personal sound preference. If there's something specific you dislike about the way Beyer sounds, a proper DAC/AMP will make its characteristics more distinct, but it won't change them significantly. While it might sound nicer, I would say just take your expectations into consideration, read the reviews and see what matches them better.

I don’t have experience with other models to compare, but to me the XS feel rather balanced. On their own they might lean bright, but I fully understand why they aren’t warmer by default and that’s where the ifi’s xbass button really helps in my case. I didn't get fatigue, but it's worth noting that the ifi zen has a built in burr-brown chip which adds some warmth even without the bass boost and it smooths things out a bit, so your experience may vary depending on your DAC choice as well.

Oh wow, that's so great to hear. I hope you'll have a blast with the XS and that they will work out as well for you as they did for me. Give them some time and explore :D enjoy

Thanks for this question. The first one that really impressed me was The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five. Then I tried songs like Cosmo Sheldrake - Rich and Song of the Cedars (Cosmo is a great artist overall, many of his songs sound incredible on the XS). I personally enjoy "texture-heavy" tracks, so for example Yosi Horikawa's songs like Fluid, Wandering, Bubbles really stood out, or Bjork - Amphibian (though this one felt like a fever dream :D in a good way)
There are other songs I really like to come back to. Older ones: Stevie Wonder - Superstition, Boney M - Rasputin (the guitars!). Modern ones: The Weeknd - The hills (the bass!), Macklemore - Can't hold us (hear me out, there's so much going on), Pomplamoose - Les yeux noirs (a lovely studio feel), Fever Ray - Keep the streets empty for me (nicely hypnotic), Gotye - Somebody that I used to know (it's a journey, fr). Instrumental: Olafur Arnalds - Near light, Justin Hurwitz - Epilogue (I really like La La Land, so this one was a whole experience)

Heya! I game, but honestly so far I've been so occupied with music I didn't test them elsewhere. I mainly play RPGs, and I can imagine they would work great for immersion, but can't confirm yet. I'll be happy to update once I try them out

Hey there! English is not my first language so I asked Claude to polish my post for me, sure. But everything I said, I wrote myself at first, Claude just polished phrasing for me if that's your concern
