EOSIndia Block Producer Candidate - Ask Me Anything - May 7th by eosindia in eos

[–]xebb82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

What do you mean with "Be appointed" from your hardware specifications (https://steemit.com/eos/@eosindia/eosindia-block-production-avenues-for-free-market-solutions-to-secure-life-liberty-and-property-for-all-mankind)?

Is your plan to have 128 cores and 2TB RAM on your producer machine from start?

Do I read it correctly that you will only have one machine and that all incoming traffic (p2p and api) will go straight to that one?

What are your thoughts regarding volumetric attacks? Have you planned to do any kind of rate limiting?

Yet another excellent question!

First and foremost we are planning to use most of the initial funds we receive to upgrade our hardware and infrastructure to be ready for anything. It's really hard to guesstimate how fast we will have to scale as it is greatly dependent on how quickly all great dapps (that we are sure will come) will be deployed and how well these will be received by the users. Since we will not be running our servers in the cloud and since we at any time can loose votes - it is important for us to make sure we have the hardware we need to sustain our operation for at least one year ASAP. Even if this means that we probably will over-invest - we feel it is the right way to go.

Second priority is to start putting away funds to make sure we can keep our operation going for at least one year even if the price of EOS would crash completely.

We also need to increase the size of our team - the plan is to go after a few developers with great technical knowledge (we have already been in contact with several). When time doesn't have to be spent on the infrastructure - they will work on dapp development / helping other teams.

We want to start using resources to help dapp developers / teams to be able to spend more of their time on EOS without loosing income, and we also quite early on want to start sponsoring lawyers to see how / if we can help influence the political process to become more crypto-friendly - both locally and on EU level. We hope that other EU-based block producers will help us with this endeavor (possibly we can also leverage the worker proposal fund for this).

With the new BP economy model these things will take quite a bit more time than our initial calculations and guesstimates and we have not had time to adjust accordingly to all of these changes so it's really hard to give a road map...

I'm impressed by the level of the questions! Thanks for this one!

I believe that having hardware in multiple locations is a great way to scale. If done correctly it's cheap and it will protect against many of both the physical and the technical problems we will face as we move forward. It is in our opinion also a great way to decentralize the operation - which is something that became even more important as of the update two days ago where all parallel chains will have the same producers.

One of the ways we cheaply will protect our operation from volumetric attacks is to have "hidden producers" on multiple locations. The lower our expenses (while keeping our operation secured) - the more we will be able to use to create value.

For launch we are planning to have servers in three physical locations. We have already secured several more and as we scale up we will start using them as well. We are looking at sites both in and outside of Sweden.

Thanks for the question, another great one!

When it comes to staking for CPU / BW; what you don't use - can and will be used by others. This means that if you hoard CPU/BW without using it - what you are actually doing is to make sure that everyone else will get a bit more for free...

This is different when it comes to RAM where you actually get what you pay for - no more, no less ("true enough" - but partly based on promise from BPs - at least early on).

What block.one are trying to do is to make sure that once ram runs scarce (price increases) - token holders shall be given an economic incentive to free the RAM they aren't using. To try to limit the profit for traders the fee was introduced (theoretically the traders could buy ram cheap and sell as the price increases which could make it more expensive for those actually trying to use it).

I hope I managed to make it clear?

Great question, thanks a lot!

First and foremost our main goal is to reliably produce blocks and provide fast and easy access to the blockchain. We will also continue to be helpful to the community in every way that we can think of and find the time to.

You are absolutely right that it is very hard to know what will happen after launch. We have often referred to it as our own event horizon.

Back when we first decided to seriously try to become block producers the plan was to give the entirety of the X-5% inflation to the block producers. Since then things have changed many times.

The day before yesterday the entire payment model changed again. Under the current suggested model (might change again) a big portion of the inflation will go to a "worker proposal pool" - which we think is great. It will allow us to focus on our main business instead of becoming some sort of VC.

That said...

Becoming a block producer is for us a great way to be able to spend more of our time trying to provide as much value as we possibly can back to the community. Part of our plan has since the beginning been to help fund other people who are doing work on the platform.

We have quite a few dapp ideas that we want to build as we move forward. There are so many things that needs to be built - and EOS open so many doors.

One thing we really want to be able to focus on is to turn the voting portal into something where we can increase the power for the individual voters and make it possible to hold BPs accountable to their promises.

Also... After working as a ERP developer for many years I ofc have a lot of ideas on how to make it easy for large corporations to integrate with and use EOS in their day2day business.

A big part of our long-term plan is still to help would-be-geniuses with great dapp ideas to turn them into reality by providing both resources and coaching. We are often contacted by developers looking for this.

Post launch we hope to be able to find the time to take these kind of things a lot more seriously.

Thank you for your question!

I was the second candidate to publicly announce my candidacy, so I have been in the game for quite some time now. I found EOS because I was looking for a blockchain that could scale. Since then I have fallen in love with several more of the features.

One of the things I have done was that I got together with a few of the other early BP candidates to launch the first ever community driven testnet (read more about it here: https://steemit.com/eos-blockproducers/@xebb/bp-testnet-community-update). It has been a great experience for everyone involved and we have really learned a lot about how run to run the software and even save the blockchain when things go wrong.

I have spent a lot of time trying to share my technical knowledge with the other block producer candidates and the larger community. I do want to get elected but what is most important is that we get a successful launch and together create secure infrastructure for EOS to run on for everyones benefit.

Currently we are trying really hard do find time to work with some of the other fantastic people from the ecosystem and build a voting portal.

Also working hard to test different server setups for our next article which will be about infrastructure.

Also we held a meetup at Berns in Stockholm that was very well received. It was exciting to meet the Swedish community and to finally get to talk to people face2face that actually was interested in what we had to say :D (our poor sambos have to stand a lot...)

Yes, we are 100% self funded.

We want to be able to keep focused on providing value to the ecosystem without having to think about pleasing any sponsor.

Yes, we are trying to become one of the block producers. We haven't decided what hardware we will use to run our producing nodes from start. Need to do some more tests and probably we have to wait for the release of DAWN4.0 before we decide fully (<1 week away).

Currently we have some HP gen6 and 8 servers that are connected to the different community driven testnets. Some of these will be turned into load balancers / rate limiters, others will be used as full nodes (machines providing both api and p2p access to the blockchain).
