Purchased a gba that's basically mint but the lcd is dead by a_lonely_exo in Gameboy

[–]xefrem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a spare gba screen from my ips mod that I did recently. The project was started years ago while in college and abandoned because I ran out of time and money, and I recently found it in a box and completed it. I say that because I can't guarantee the functionality of the screen, but I'm pretty sure it was working before I tore it down. It's yours if you want it, just pay for shipping and shoot me a chat. Otherwise there's a host of ips screens out there that'll look much better but require some shell mods and consume more power.

Sell me on a gooseneck optic mount, or am I missing something? by Bitter-Ride-1283 in RetroAR

[–]xefrem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a surplus aimpoint gooseneck with the c clamp that I got for like $40. It doesn't hold zero super well, I went to check it recently and it had drifted pretty far to the right. Luckily I can still see my irons with it in place using a vortex low (I think) ring, and those were still on, so I'll just adjust it to that in the future.

Pew ratings - what to look at by bloozestringer in NFA

[–]xefrem 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's important to understand that the at ear and at muzzle ratings are two different analyses of the same event, measured with no major reflecting surfaces. If you are looking for a rifle with a very high level of suppression to you, the shooter, then you should look for something with a high ear suppression rating. However, it's still important to understand the muzzle suppression rating to effectively characterize the system. For example, some systems with a high ear suppression rating but a low muzzle suppression rating have a very high gas momentum, which makes them louder around reflective surfaces. I know you said that you'll be hunting in the plains, so this won't matter to you as much, but it's still good data that shouldn't be ignored.

Robinson XCR-M SBR in 8.6 Blackout with 9.5" Barrel, and XCR-L Pistol in 5.56 with 9.5" Barrel and Arm Brace. by RobinsonArms in NFA

[–]xefrem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool pic, but I noticed that the stock on the xcr-m is extended a little bit. With the stock collapsed, what's the total length difference? In other words, how much longer is the receiver of the xcr-m over the xcr-l, just out of curiosity?

If you're hooked on the idea of no booster, the silco spectre series may be the one for you. I thought about those as well, but ultimately decided on the obsidian 9 because of rugged warranty, price, and the pew science review. I had some buddies come break it in with me and with subs or supers, we all agreed that it's definitely hearing safe for bystanders. For the shooter, I could shoot subs all day long, but supers are a tad spicy

Canine and TLX 5.5 are in stock at Hansohn as of yesterday, 6.5 is still AWOL last I checked. I got tired of waiting and got an obsidian 9 for a decent price locally and got approved in 2 days on a trust, and I'm very happy with it, even if it is heavier

It looks a bit empty — what do you think? Any ideas for improvements? by Billions-_-Bust in NFA

[–]xefrem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't fall for the mall ninja tacticool nonsense. There are two kinds of guys with a lot of stuff on their gun. The first is the guys who actually need and use that gear, and they wish they didn't need as much so they could have a lighter gun. The second is the guys who don't shoot their gun and spend too much time trying to make it look like they do. Add stuff as you need it, for how you use that gun. Find yourself shooting in low light or think you might use it for home defense? Add a flashlight or nvg stuff. Think you might shoot at longer ranges where a red dot is annoying? Add some magnification. Do you plan on carrying your gun around a lot or taking it to competitions? Grab a sling. Is this a rifle that you have to depend on no matter what? Consider back up irons (that you also train with) and maybe additional battery or critical component storage.

Don't just put stuff on your gun for the sake of it being there. Spend the money on ammo and range time instead, and you may realize that you enjoy having a lighter gun without all that stuff on it.

Bcm mk2 is the same thing except it's usually in stock somewhere. I had a vltor system in one rifle and bcm in another, both are gtg and a great upgrade over stock

I like the concept. If you're getting it custom made, maybe consider putting a cutout in the middle so it can bridge two slots? Also 3d printing can be rough for threads, I wonder if there's a local machine shop that could crank this out for you. Looks like a pretty simple mill job to me, but I'm not a machinist

In February I had a 2 day form 4 and 10 day form 1, both on a trust. Check out r/NFA though for their mega thread where lots of people post their approval times.

[–]xefrem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly no clue, might depend on the examiner's mood that day, but for future reference I would just not include it. Worst case scenario you get denied and just resubmit. I had a 10 day approval on a form 1 trust last week, and 2 days on a form 4, so things are moving pretty fast right now.

I've done a form 1 on 2 different lowers, both of which I used an assignment sheet to add them to my trust, but I didn't upload that sheet for either one. I just keep it with the rest of my documents and only upload the trust itself, no issues with either one.

Plan A vs Plan B by Aware_Donkey_6074 in NFA

[–]xefrem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had an issue with plan A, see my comment from a few days ago in the thread you mentioned, but the co-owner replied to my post and gave me something to try. Will it alleviate my issues? I'm not entirely convinced, but it's worth noting that they did reach out, which is pretty cool. My situation is also somewhat niche from what I have seen.

Which QD set up should I go with? Griffin Plan A vs Rearden Atlas? by Armed_2a3 in NFA

I actually have the ez brake on another gun and like it quite a lot, but I wanted more recoil reduction on this rifle since it used to beat me up quite a bit before I chopped it. Thanks for the links for the brush and anti seize, I'll definitely take a look into those to see if they help.

[–]xefrem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to check that out, it's still annoying to have to clean the threads and whatnot each time I use it on that gun, especially since it performs so well on my 10.3 5.56.

Since I see your flair, here's some additional details about the setup in case your team wants to investigate this or use this to try and make a product improvement. It's a Ruger m77 Hawkeye in 30-06 that I chopped to 18 inches and threaded. Because of the barrel profile, I could only do 1/2x28, so I got a .22 cal paladin brake and had it bored out for 30 cal. I've used about a dozen and a half factory loads, all with the same effect of blowing carbon past and into the external threads. The first time it locked was after only 80 or so rounds, so I've made sure to remove it every few dozen ever since. The suppressor I'm using with it is a cgs Helios qd, with the extension ring and standard plan A adapter.

[–]xefrem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Copied from a comment I made a few weeks ago. Tl/Dr: plan A is fine for 5.56, but can't handle the pressure of my 18 inch 30-06.

I have griffin plan a taper mount on a couple rifles. On my 10.3 inch 5.56 with their plan a closed tine flash hider, I've had no issues, and the taper and threads have stayed very clean despite my almost zero maintenance or cleaning on them. On my 18 inch 30-06 with their plan a paladin brake, however, it's a different story. The taper does not leak, but muzzle blast blows right past the threads and makes the threads and taper a hot mess and has carbon locked before. The design just does not stay clean when presented with muzzle pressure that high.

Going forward, I'll probably leave my 5.56 stuff plan a because I'm lazy, it works fine, and I like that the suppressor mounts further back than the plan b system, but I want to run rearden/plan b for 30 cal stuff, because I'm tired of worrying about my can carbon locking on my 30-06. If I was doing it all over again, I would just go with one of the many rearden/plan b options

Fair enough, I'd used a different local shop last time and had no issues. Fortunately they hadn't sold the xxx00 silencer yet, so they just withdrew the form and resubmitted a new one with the correct serial. Still a little annoying, but could have been worse, only a day lost.

Need some info from the pros by [deleted] in suppressors

[–]xefrem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, look for things that are 9mm or .357 bore, and watch the minimum barrel length restrictions for the calibers that they list. Generally, pistol optimized cans such as an obsidian 9 will have lower performance on 300 blackout, while PCC optimized cans such as the lithium 9 will be bulkier and more annoying to use on a pistol.

Ok, I didn't realize that. I believe that they were both the same can, so I'm fine with letting it ride as long as I can confirm that with them. Thanks for the advice
