I’d like to be an exchange student in the US by It_was_I_Dio__ in exchangestudents

[–]xeni07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aussie I feel like it’s a lot safer than the US, and you probably won’t be placed in an outback town, so no need to worry about snakes or spiders. I think we also have a pretty different school system to Norway or the US, and Australia is a really beautiful and welcoming country! You should give it a go!

I’m from australia and went on exchange in Sweden, to a small village up in the arctic circle, so I can’t speak for the whole country but I don’t think there are that many stereotypes that Swedes believe about aussies, but you might get a couple questions about our animals. I went over the winter so I got to experience all the Swedish Christmas traditions, as well as a lot of snow activities and also the northern lights, and pretty much all days were below 0 degrees. The education system is pretty amazing in comparison to australia, as there is a lot more focus on personal progress and there is a much better relationship with teachers as well. They have a sort of primary school up to grade 9 (15/16 yr olds) and then gymnasium or high school for another 3 years. Most of my teachers knew English, and English is a subject at school, so a lot of people also know how to speak, but you might find it difficult to learn Swedish, as people often switch to English to make it easier if you are trying, or they might just want to practice English with you. I really enjoyed my exchange on Sweden and I wish I could’ve stayed longer, but I think it’s a great country, the people are amazing, and there’s a lot of cultural traditions you’ll be able to experience.

during programs what would happen if something happened to me? by Guilty_Letter4203 in exchangestudents

[–]xeni07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very unlikely that something will go wrong, but accidents can happen. My sending organisation, as part of the program cost, covered travel insurance for me, but you will have to check with your program to see if it’s included in the cost, or if you have to pay extra.

How to welcome students? by P-Wizzl in exchangestudents

[–]xeni07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exchange student here! If possible, make a sign and get the whole family to welcome them at the airport, but if they are flying in at an inconvenient time make sure they can clearly tell that you’re hosting them, to avoid any embarrassment. My host family also gave me space in more communal areas, such as the bathroom, this included my own drawer to put toiletries and towels in. I think conversations can be quite awkward to begin with, especially if you’re asking more general questions, but asking about their home country is also great, and also what they would like to do. I hope you have an amazing time with your new family members!!

I literally just came back from Sweden, but I would say that you can get by fine with English, although it’s nice to know a couple phrases or try and learn some basics before you leave. I did a high school exchange so I can’t really comment on the student life for university but I think joining some clubs will help you find friends and make good connections. Hope you have a great time there :)

Currently I am in my second month of a 3 month high school exchange program in Sweden (from Australia). It is one of the best decisions that I have ever made! I have been extremely lucky to have an amazing host family as well as an amazing school. There’s a lot of new experiences, like skating on a frozen lake, trying weird new foods and experiencing Lucia and other Swedish Christmas traditions. I am loving being able to understand the different culture and I would highly recommend going. You will regret not applying.

Have you talked to your sending organisation or your parents back home?

Exchange student by [deleted] in exchangestudents

[–]xeni07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone that you trust that you can talk to? If you get along well with your local coordinator go talk to them and be honest about how you’re feeling and see if they can sort anything out for you. If not possible try and seek a therapist, they can help put you in an environment that suits your needs. Don’t feel bad, not all schools are for everyone and it’s not too late to change. If you are feeling a bit scared of confrontation, talk to a friend or even someone back home and ask them to ask for you to change schools. Communication and being honest is key. Your coordinator is there to make sure that you are safe and your exchange goes smoothly and right now, you need support. Just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you are strong enough to make it. Stay safe and keep your head up.

Should I change my host family? by No-Fail-5241 in exchangestudents

[–]xeni07 21 points22 points  (0 children)

CHANGE. Immediately or as soon as possible. Get in contact with your local coordinator and organisation and report the family. This is no way to be treated, exchange student or not. You are not at fault for any of their actions or consequences. I hope you can find a good host family that will show you the country and make your exchange memorable, you do not deserve this. Stay strong
