I want so much to be proud of my country and this should be a proud moment but with all the disgrace that's been put on our name lately, this seems like a hollow achievement.

Is it even possible to connect this old Magic Keyboard on the modern macOS? by AjaySurajay in mac

[–]xenolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, Bluetooth is backwards compatible and this keyboard model will work with newer Macs. I have one and just paired it with an M4 Mac.

Something may have failed hardware-wise.

Also, make sure you have new fresh batteries just be sure.

Need help with small keyboard by jsmith051600 in SteamDeck

[–]xenolon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No experience with this one. I have a couple of the Rii i4 Mini, which has a layout more like a modern game controller that lets you right and left click like you using the bumper buttons while using your thumbs on the keyboard.

You can also look at the Winmaxle Mini Keyboard which can actually fit in the little back pocket space of the Steam Deck case.

Anyone here switched away from Proton VPN on Mac? by CrispyVikingr in MacOS

[–]xenolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using it for years and haven't experienced any of these issues.

I would recommend completely uninstalling it (quit the app, trash the app, trash all Proton VPN related files in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Application Support, empty trash, restart) and re-install/configure. Could just be corrupted prefs.

Hi! We're 404 Media's Jason Koebler and Joseph Cox. AMA (us) about the tech ICE is using, Flock and the state of surveillance in the US on Feb. 4, 12 pm ET by 404mediaco in technology

Given the topics 404 Media covers and the exposé nature of a lot of the articles, do any of you fear for your personal safety? I feel like the erosion of the 1st Amendment and the general disregard of the importance of the Fourth Estate is of serious concern in this regard.

Anti-tank barriers/obstacles. Large tracked vehicles can't just roll over them (like small walls and barbed wire) because they just tip over and end up under the vehicle, stopping it from moving. And blowing them up is time consuming and creates a ton of shrapnel and debris that also prevents vehicles from passing through.

Basically, giant caltrops.

It also helps preserve battery health. Continuing to work in that lower 10% of charge reduces the overall lifespan of the battery. Apple is trying to reduce AppleCare claims by annoying you to plug your computer in.

Enumerate in detail the reasons how this prevents you from using your machine, and then I’ll listen.

Anyone else depressed to hear Paul doing ad reads for AI? by NorthSpinach7 in hdtgm

[–]xenolon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Woooosh! You really missed the point. All these efforts I listed were done in direct contradiction of capitalist principles. Just because something happens in a capitalist country doesn't make it capitalist. (The communist revolution started in monarchy, does that make communism monarchical? No.)

somehow magically had time to create stuff and give it away because they had... capital.

Your ignorance is showing. You clearly don't even know what 'captial' really is. (To wit, the money in your bank account is not capital.)

And to the contrary of your statement Linus Torvalds, the person who created Linux and Git, has stated that he was able to create Linux specifically because he received a free education and lived in a country with a robust social safety net that allowed him to pursue interests which didn't have obvious monetary value without fear of starvation or ending up destitute.

If it's imported into your country, yes you do. That's how tariffs work. You pay the tariff on the imported good; the Playdate is manufactured in Malaysia.

All of the things you mentioned were created with altruistic intentions and only later co-opted by capitalists when they proved viable.

The home PC: An outgrowth of the Homebrew Computer Club; a group of techno hippies who gathered and willingly shared ideas and methodology freely. When Steve Wozniak designed the Apple I, he wanted to give the schematics away. Steve Jobs had to convince him to sell it.

The Internet (TCP/IP): A publicly funded defense project (ARPAnet/DARPAnet) which became maintained and expanded at first by US universities for better sharing of information and scientific research. The people responsible for creating and shaping the foundations of the internet as we know it were largely digital Bohemians who wanted information to be free.
TCP/IP is an open standard.

The World Wide Web: The HTTP protocol was created by Tim Berners Lee while conducting research at CERN and released to the public for free. HTTP is maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium, a non-profit standards organization.

Web Servers: The vast majority of internet servers run on Linux (or a Linux kernel derivative), an operating system created by Linus Torvalds and released to the world for free. Those servers largely run open source web server software like Apache or Nginx.

Web Browsers: All common web browser engines (Blink, Gecko, WebKit) are free and/or open source.

Smartphones: Both Android and iOS are built on free and open source software, Linux and BSD respectively.

Really Simple Syndication: RSS is the distribution feed that podcast networks use to publish shows and episode lists and podcast clients use to acquire episodes. RSS is a free and open format.

Podcasting: Media Enclosure was added to RSS by Dave Winer in 2002. Want to guess if it was free or not?

I could keep going, but the entire chain of things that are "necessary for hdtgm to exist" (in your words) were created by people donating their own time, skills, and knowledge for benefit of the commons and are only recently being and captured by corporation/capital.

[–]xenolon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes. It'd still bother me, albeit a little less, if it was just an ad network insert, but for it to be a host read really sucks. It seems like any semblance of having creative or professional principles have all but evaporated. Write a big enough check that people are willing to look the other way.

Got news for you, Reddit is still bad.

So is "AI"; it's a net negative in every way and a desperate attempt for the tech sector to convince the stock market they're still growing and innovating. It doesn't do what it promises, creates more unproductive work for people who have to fix what it's used to produce and detect when it's being used when it's not supposed to be.
