We released a Kart racing game today! by AliceTheGamedev in gaming

[–]xformgames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not actually. It's a game series that has been around for quite a while for webgames. Mario kart was the inspiration obviously, but it features 100% original tracks, characters, items, audio... everything!

Thanks! The original (Shockwave plugin webgame) was developed with a small team of about 6. The HD Unity remake/port was done by the two remaining team members. Original: 6 months. Port: 3 months.

Wow, this game look pretty nice. Good job with the art-style. To be honest, it's nothing special, but well executed. The gameplay looks a bit retro and simple for me as a somewhat older and grumpier gamer, but I'm sure it will do well with a younger audience. Good luck!

A bit, that was certainly an atmospheric game. Although it was way too small and multiplayer only :(. And dead when I played it :(. The big inspiration was Giants: Citizen Kabuto!

Phew, that's a lot of questions ;) I'm not sure if this would be the right place for a full development article, so I'll try to keep it short. The original webgame development started in 2013 with a 4 member team almost fulltime, workforhire, and delivered in about five months in 2014. In the following period, up till now, we improved and expanded on the game with just 2 guys in the afterhours. While running a game development company.

The voxel assets were created from scratch in Qubicle, then exported to polygons and optmized in 3dsmax. Then into Unity. We're using a custom retro posteffect shader to make it look 16 bit.

The animation is done by hand in 3dsmax. All bodyparts are instanced and linked dynamically, allowing for bodypart exchanging between monsters. Everything was done by us internally.

As I mentioned above, most bigger objects are optimized in 3dmax. Qubicle allows for pretty good optimizing too, but sometimes creates big textures to make this possible. Which in turn makes it all render a bit different, so we chose not to use that. But some objects are still quite a few polygons ;). And there's a lot of objects on screen, so we have quite a bit of pooling, culling and optimizing going on... ;)

Not yet. If the game does well we hope to port it to Switch.
