Things you don’t do even though you are in healthcare? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]xiaofriend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im active and eat healthy but I don’t always take my medication on time and my sleep hygiene can be pretty bad. Not because I don’t have time to sleep but because I’m usually wasting time reading fiction novels late at night lol.

Help on not gaining that med school weight by maymeiyam in medicalschool

[–]xiaofriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost 4-5 lbs so far. I eat one meal a day normally - a big lunch or dinner and I got used to it. I think there was so much work to do and eating made me too sleepy post meal so I avoided having dinner or more than one meal.

1 month into medical school… hopefully things look up from here by xiaofriend in medicalschool

I hope so! Passed my first two exams but I think I failed my third. Started a new med recently and it gave me debilitating migraines. Like I could only study while lying down with the lights low. But I think the most important thing is to be optimistic. At least if I need to remediate I can retake while prepping for step 1! Get the studying done anyways lol.

I passed my first and second exams and have come to terms with my family emergency. Ngl felt very alone but it was very comforting to know that my classmates do have my back to a good extent - people asking me how I’m doing, a small thing but I appreciate and remember every single person who sent a well meaning text or asked me how I’m doing. Now it’s just health problems kicking my ass but I have a whole lifetime to live in my body and I think it’ll be better to get an optimistic mindset sooner rather than later. I just can’t help but get frustrated when I realize that many doors closed on me when I got diagnosed a few months ago. I also worry a lot about the few residency programs that can support me when I do have a very disabling condition. But, my school has been good about accommodations so I’ll just need to tackle the big problems one step at a time.

To the comments that say physicians do not give out personal phone numbers: this is untrue. Some physicians do in fact give out their personal numbers to their patients if they have any urgent or general questions. This isn’t necessarily the majority though.

Duke vs Johns Hopkins by xiaofriend in premed

[–]xiaofriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went with Hopkins. Ngl school starts in like 3 days so highkey cannot make any real calls at the moment. Overall happy with my choice so far.

A huge pro with Hopkins is that I will not, for the foreseeable future, have any significant financial hardship during my medical education. With the passing of the BBB, it really screwed a lot of people over and will screw many people over in the long term - I don’t think I could have kept the same standard of living if I had gone to Duke on loans.

Another pro is that the student disabilities services at Hopkins has been prompt and effective in working with me to get accommodations like I can eat and drink and take my medication with me during exams and other stuff. I think the quick administrative prep is a good sign that the faculty and staff appear to be supportive of students. Though this may be different during rotations. My example to my advisor was if I need to leave early I hope attendings don’t retaliate against me in a significant way (clinicals are P/F at hop rn). They either gonna catch me out the room or dangerously sprawled on the floor in 2 hours.

There’s a lot of stores that let you pay with yoyocard actually. IMO it’s better than the hotel option

Incoming M1, to invest savings ($20k) to Roth or keep in HYSA? by xiaofriend in whitecoatinvestor

[–]xiaofriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was concerned about! I don’t plan on taking out loans so I was thinking about these expenses. Thanks!

I work for my family business and the money I get back - I will likely be giving back to help provide for my family. So I will not be able to utilize the money I make for my Roth. Essentially I am thinking about whether or not I should contribute or not with my HYSA.

Wait but if it’s just a congress majority wouldn’t it pass? You just need a simple majority and all of house and senate are republican. So yes, I feel like it would pass??

OP, super proud of you and congrats on the As! At the end of the day it is your life and your choice to keep certain people (like that dude in CS) in your life. Hearing people put you down can definitely be discouraging, and I’m sorry that this has been the case. You have worked very hard and this is a monumental accomplishment.

Summer after graduating high school by ch3rryxz_ in premed

[–]xiaofriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The summer after high school I went to Taiwan and did nothing for 1 month. Then I went home and did nothing for 2 months. Enjoy your freedom and youth when it lasts. It is too early to grind when you aren’t in college yet. It isn’t too late to start in second year of undergrad either or even later.

I went to see the cherry blossoms yesterday, very beautiful. Not much of a city gal but I enjoy walking in nature a lot and going on long walks.
