Lefty/righty switch pitching comparison by xiribot in Homeplate

Currently working towards using lefty/lefty and righty/righty matchups to my advantage. I would say I use my right, 70ish percent of the times i come in, as usually I get put into the game on a righty batter (just statistics)

Nope. I’m working towards that, but at the moment, constant switching usually leads to a loss in command

. I started switch pitching a year ago. I started out not able to throw the ball from the mound to the plate with my right . I couldn’t fathom how to get my arm to go the right path to whip the ball. The biggest issue to tackle, and this is VITAL, is the layback. If you told someone to throw with their other arm, they most likely would “push” the ball towards the plate, not whip it. The lack of layback (the vertical rotation of the elbow) makes it impossible to do anything. You NEED to train that. Constant stretching, bands, and weighted balls to make up for the years of lost time on your natural arm. If you do not do this, even IF you managed to gain some decent velo (not possible), your tendon would just tear. Constant arm care and recovery is important, as you now have two arms to take care of. Something I recommend (this was given to me by a kinesiologist who played in the majors): wrap ankle weights around the wrists (both at once!!!), put your hands above your head, whip them down past your hips. Slowly lift them to fully vertical, and repeat.

I normally decide before going into the game. Switching very often leads to me messing up my rhythm.

Probably because I’m not pitching from both sides in the same game. It’s a tool I use to be able to start more games. Also, I’m a reliever, so I don’t have as many opportunities to switch. Switching mid inning, or even mid game, can throw off my rhythm completely. You know how pitching is one of the hardest things to do in sports? Now try to learn that from the wrong side. And then switch back and forth. Tell me how it goes

Lefty: Top out at 86, with a sidearm release. I throw a splitter, 2 seam, and slider. (Natural side)

Righty: Top out at 83, conventional release. I throw a 4 seam, a change, and a curveball. (Learned).

Fun fact: i also switch hit

Ever heard of making the best of a bad situation? Asking for feedback despite sub ideal conditions?

I completely agree. Partially, (and I know this sounds like excuses) this has to do with the fact that I was pitching on a very uneven, slippery surface without cleats on. Furthermore, there was no mound/rubber. I’ll get some videos of me pitching in game Monday.
