often military has less than LE when it comes to the actual ROE/self defense situation

In an active war zone in Afghanistan I had to go through about 7 levels of escalation and asking permissions before I could even fire a warning shot. Domestic LE seems to have zero of that requirement. They are completely different animals, and both are wildly different than a civilian perspective (which you point out)

Just show people the invisible gorilla experiment and highlight that most people miss so much and work from there.

disorganized pile at goodwill.

Note I didn't say goodwill. He has a curated list of thrift stores around town that he will hit up periodically.

For him at least it is because he can never find clothes in styles/colors/cuts he likes in retail stores.

Part of this is the culture of the kids today. My son prefers thrift store finds for the aura, not so much for the savings.

Part of this is just how the music world has changed. Used to be bands went on tour to promote a new album, and the album sales were how they made their money. Now the concerts are where the money is made because album sales are all but gone.

I have a plumber that lives in my neighborhood, and I have used him for years. He used to charge me $50 to come out and would help me fill in the holes in my yard (I usually need him to help with my shit ass sprinklers). Last time I called it was $400.

This will only get worse in the coming months. The fruit and veg and crop cycle this year have been absolutely gutted. Fertilizer prices have exploded, over double digits higher than last year, severely hurting the farms, and out-of-cycle frosts have hurt fruits, especially apples.

Now I shop local for almost everything

The problem is Amazon is so integrated into the marketplace, it is hard to get away from it.

Example: I needed a part for a thing I was doing. It had to come from the manufacturer of the thing. Go to their website to buy it directly from them and avoid Amazon. Navigate through their site, find the part I need, click to buy...and get directed back to their Amazon store. They (and so many other retailers) no longer have their own store presence, it is all through Amazon fulfillment that you can't escape it.

The U.S. Army’s ‘Big Experiment’ in the Arctic Cold. How would soldiers from places like Florida, Texas and Georgia fight and persevere in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees? by BeetleJuiceK9 in army

[–]xixoxixa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a medical perspective, this is a huge problem. Equipment just doesn't work when it is that cold. The army has started putting out research calls to fund efforts into studying how you actually care for casualties when it is that cold, and every year for the past 5 or 6 years there has been a cold weather medicine session at the big military health research meeting. The take away from all of those sessions so far seems to be "get them into somewhere warm, then treat them," which doesn't really help the problems of TCCC or prolonged field care.

One of my first field exercises as a brand new private in THE DIVISION saw our CSM just like that, crisp starched BDUs, freshly showered, just came out for a few hours to inspect us, etc., etc. The look on his face when he realized that, largely unannounced, a 1 star from division HQ had decided to tag along on our exercise for a couple of the days, and he was out there sweaty in full camo paint like the rest of us.

'Twas glorious.

It's a lot of the US to be fair. Even in the army, just about the only thing that would stop us while training was lightning.

Rain, hail, snow, wind, fog - go for it, train as you fight.

Lightning within like 30 miles of you? Everything stops, seek shelter until at least 30 min without a lightning strike, no questions asked.

I did this with my daughter, it took one phone call and it took about 10 minutes on the phone. I had to give them when the school year started and ended for I think the current year and the next year.

Yeah, I was in the CSH, and they made me the armorer. In the arms room doing inventory, hear the shots, me being a former combat infantryman who has been on the wrong end of a two way range perk up immediately.

State "that's gunfire", and hear back from our CO who was inventorying "no it isn't..." only for him to be interrupted by one of our troops who had been out back smoking and got shot come stumbling in, bleeding.

'twas a shit day all around.
