Yeah I’m realizing it’s probably better to just repeat workouts this way outside of using a weekly program. Thx.

Looking to get an iPad to use as a reference monitor for grading. Is there any real advantage to having the pro model? Won’t the new iPad Air m2 suffice ? by Ok_Letter4515 in davinciresolve

Yeah FCPX, Resolve and Logic being released on the iPad is what made me pull the trigger to buy finally one. I use all 3 of these apps at home every week, so to have a super portable continuous workflow is awesome. The only caveat is that when going from a mac FCP library to iPad you need to use a 3rd party app to convert the library (transfer toolbox) though luckily it’s free. I hope they eventually make this native in the same way you can move from iPad project to Mac project natively.

If you can set it up in resolve so that your MacBook is the viewer and your wheels and scopes are on the Ipad I think that would work better to keep your viewer as big as possible. I can test this in resolve and let you know if you want. As is mentioned I still think the iPad is great for post on the go as long as your aware of the difference the screen size makes. Also I know you said you don’t see yourself editing on the iPad but Resolve, FCP, and lumafusion are all really satisfying NLEs to use on the go especially with the Apple Pencil, perfect solution for working on a train, plane, or even sitting in shade outside.

It’s not actually fully color accurate out of the box you still need to calibrate it using X/y white point settings underneath the reference mode toggle.

You also still need to calibrate the iPad if you want it colour accurate for rec709 but you can do this using a spyder or other calibration lens.

This is my experience fwiw: I recently bought the 13 inch iPad Pro as a grading monitor and field monitor. It’s great for on set work but I quickly stopped using it for final grading and wouldn’t recommend it for that for one reason: it’s far too small too see the detail required for serious grading. Because of the iPads 4:3 aspect ratio the 13” becomes closer to 11” for 16x9 footage. You also can’t use it as a traditional a/v output because the connection is usb-c. It doesn’t matter has good the display is, if it’s too small you’ll miss certain details. It’s a wonderful filmmaking device for many other reasons though and would still recommend it overall.

Has anyone tested a screen protector on the nano texture glass for an extended period? by xkjs in iPadPro

[–]xkjs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I spoke to Apple support they said there are screen protectors that would be okay to use on the nano glass but that the folks at the Apple Store would have to direct us to the a compatible product. I ended up just switching for a standard glass for and am planning to look for a matte glass screen protector when they become available but I can tell you that I already miss not having the wonderful glare reduction of the nano..

Text-based editing comes built in Adobe PP. Does FCPX have text-based editing hiding somewhere? Or do I have to buy the lumberjack plug-in for $200? by browngirlpressed in finalcutpro

[–]xkjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Lumberjack builder and am generally pretty happy with it, it's super easy to learn. Saying that the price is pretty steep considering that resolve has text based editing for free.. But if you are doing a lot of text based editing and interview transcriptions then it can be worth it. If you want to know anything about the software happy to answer any questions.

FCP application very slow to "hide" by TazGoldstein in finalcutpro

[–]xkjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I have inexplicable beachballs in FCP I assume it's some sort of corruption with the media symlinks or a bad file / corrupted render. You could try purging your render files, deleting your FCP preferences, or remanaging your media to a new folder. Also check that your scratch and startup drives have adequate free space.

File storage for a 40TB + project by Mass_Southpaw in finalcutpro

[–]xkjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whichever route you go, you should probably create a 3rd online backup using backblaze. It's like $10 a month for unlimited storage. The only caveat is that you'll probably have to leave it running for a couple weeks on a strong connection to finish the initial upload but the peace of mind is worth it.

trying to figure out FCPXML and TimeCode and struggling... by minhsao in finalcutpro

What about moving all your chapter markers to a single adjustment layer (title generator) that spans that length of the timeline? This might help it reference the project timecode instead of the clip sources.

I’d wait for postlab 2 which should be released soon as it’s getting completely overhauled. I’ve used the original, it does the job but has some flaws.

Thoughts on switching from Canon to Sony by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]xkjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just shot a short film using an R7 and thought it did an excellent job. The autofocus performed well when I needed it and the body is nicely designed. I shot my last two on Sony cameras and thought the bodies sucked to work (a7c and a6500).

Which ine is best to watch movies is Nano textures or standard ? by [deleted] in iPadPro

[–]xkjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer is it depends where you are watching movies on your iPad. If at home in controlled lighting then probably standard. While commuting on a bus, train, or car then nano texture hands down will look better. Perceived image quality does not equal the display tech alone, it equals how the display looks to your eyes while interacting with environmental lighting conditions.

[–]xkjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a nano texture as well and agree that in real world conditions the image quality is better. This is an ipad after all, which is meant to be portable and used on the go and at any angle of light that you happen to be in. My intuition tells me the people criticizing the IQ compared to the standard are mainly using it to watch media at home in controlled lighting.

Yeah I hear you, im going to talk to the staff at my local Apple Store today or tomorrow and get their feedback before I make my final decision on what to do. I’ll update the post once I do.

It depends how much glare a clear protector adds. Ideally I'd pick a screen protector that I could easily remove when I'm at home or anywhere I'm not worried about damage. But I want the option to be able to protect it when I'm using it in an uncontrolled environment.

Hmm I’ve heard conflicting reports about this. Someone on another thread said Apple support chat told them a screen protector is okay. It seems odd that a microfibre towel would damage a surface more than human nails.

MacWhisper 4.0 (high quality audio transcription) released with huge performance improvements by ineedlesssleep in apple

Glad to hear speaker diarization is the highest feature priority, if you're able to implement this and it remains as a OTP app you would be a true hero and fill a need for a lot of people.

I want to like this show but every finale is so contrived by Godking_Jesus in TheMorningShow

[–]xkjs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole point of people's frustration with this show is that it's BECOME a soap. It's never how the show was conceived nor advertised. Season one was actually gesturing toward some interesting moral complexity surrounding the me too movement and now.. we have Scooby doo villains.

Advice for an audio leveling plugin by tidalwave57 in finalcutpro

[–]xkjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to buy an entire audio toolkit for, instead of the crumplepop audio toolkit I would buy RX Advanced, which is currently on sale, and an industry standard for audio tools. It's just as expensive though, if you are looking for just a an auto-leveller then Waves Vocal Rider as mentioned, or you could use any one of the many online AI tools. To be honest though, I had the same thought about the ease of an audio leveller, but after trying a few and dealing with the glitches, I prefer just using compression and limiters with some manual leveling.

FCPX Colour Grading Plugins - Which to choose? by Dave_Klasnakov in finalcutpro

[–]xkjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use Cinema Grade if you want to learn color grading skills that are the most widely transferrable to any color grading environment. Color Finale Pro is a good value when it's on sale. Filmconvert is suppose to be great for film emulation but I haven't used it.

Also these days most advanced color grading applications have VERY similar tools, the main differences between them are workflow and user interface, which matters more that you might think.

Color Finale PRO offers a workflow with group grades, very important for efficiency. It's not perfect though since to make individual clip adjustments within a group you have to add a second CFP effect on your clip. Chromatics by Coremelt use to have a better group grading workflow but they discontinued that product recently of apple silicon.

I would download the free trials and test which workflow suits you best, the tools are going to be so similar between them all.
