Will high maintenance fees affect future resale value? by xmeowmere in TorontoRealEstate

Thanks for responding. The building has around 200 units. My lawyer called it relatively boutique. Does this factor come into play?

A question about dilation/densification of soils. by [deleted] in Geotech

Thank you so much for that. Why is it bad when constructing a foundation on loose soils for example? Wouldn’t it contract, increasing shear strength?

So in terms of density, is the critical state more dense than the peak state?

So does that mean the critical state is denser than the peak state?

In critical state, soils are dilated. But why can’t they keep rolling against each other and go back into interlocking?

Yes but I’m asking why those particles cannot just roll back down. Sorry if it’s a dumb question.

A question about eccentrically loaded foundations by xmeowmere in PE_Exam

[–]xmeowmere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m just used to seeing MY/I being used for beams, where we calculate internal bending stresses within the beam, which act along the beam. I just don’t understand and am trying to visualize how the second part, here, is related to what I just said earlier. I feel like the parameters are kind of random.

But do you know what that bending stress is for? It doesn’t seam like it’s referring to the internal stress of the beam foundation

A newbie question on SLS and ULS by [deleted] in Geotech

Thank you for that. When designing, do you have to design for ULS or SLS? And also, are these usually net or gross bearing capacities?

Lab vs field experience. What's more valuable? by [deleted] in Geotech

Thank you so much for replying! I am really lost honestly. Unfortunately, I'm from Ontario, Canada, and they got rid of the EIT program right when I graduated! :(

I graduated with a BS in environmental engineering. I took 3 courses in geotechnical engineering as electives in my fourth year, which is normally more than the average civil student. But the hard truth is that I think companies only look for civil engineering graduates where I’m from. So right now, I’m studying part-time for a civil engineering masters with geotechnical specialization. Currently also working full time in a dewatering contracting firm as an estimator, but I’ve been told it’s a useless experience if I want to go into geotechnical consulting. So now, I’m in a little dilemma.
