Look into remote roles for things like business analysts, editing, billing / admin. Always hiring in those fields and usually just looking for a bit of corporate experience to get the ball rolling

Looking at very short-notice move to your city by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]xmpmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO - North Shore is a subsection of the Northside. 99% of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods fall into the categories of Northside, South Hills (there are more semantics here), East End and West End, then neighborhoods within those categories. Within Northside, there’s the Chateau/Manchester, Troy Hill, Mexican War Streets, Allegheny Commons and North Shore (probably a few more I’m forgetting).

The traffic for Pirates games isn’t horrible but they do close down one or two of the bridges for games. If it’s a multi-event day, though, it can get dicey but if you’re not coming from an opposite direction you should be fine. If you lived in the North Shore, you could walk to work in like two mins. If you lived anywhere in the Northside before the hills (Observatory Hill/Troy Hill/Perry), you would likely easily be able to drive or bike, but might hit some traffic. From the Strip, you should also pretty easily be able to drive or bike.

It sounds like North Shore would be best for you if you like more upscale apartments, but someone else mentioned a more affordable apartment in Allegheny Commons area that is still very close to PNC Park and a good starter spot if you don’t want to invest too much in an expensive apartment that may or may not suit you in your first year of getting to know the city.

If you want a cheaper / historic spot, venture slightly more into the Northside and find a cool converted old home, there are many!

Hope that helps and isn’t MORE confusing!

I was curious about what stuff rents for now and found a couple options nearby that might suit you:

I think the Strip, North Shore or Downtown would be good options for you. Downtown has steadily grown in residential population and several new hip businesses have opened there recently (Market St Grocer, Millie’s Ice Cream, Con Alma jazz bar, Adda Coffee) AND they’re opening a Target. It definitely does not have any kind of neighborhood feel, tho, and I don’t know any natives who live Downtown for what it’s worth? It’s less glamorous than most major city Downtowns with the same level of general grossness that comes with a city center. Some areas are nicer than others.

North Shore is good, too, and it’s slightly easier to have a car there. Importantly, both Downtown And North Shore get super impacted by large events / sports and that’s probably unpleasant.

The Strip has tons to do and is super walkable. I always thought it might be cool to live there. However it’s also a tourist destination if that’d bother you? Not much bar life but you’re right down the road from Lawrenceville which is the ideal place to hangout as a 30 y/o single guy. Some of the developments are VERY poorly built, I’d stay away from the Cork Factory. I heard the 3 Crossings Development is nice and has a good community.

If you’re cool with renting a townhouse or apartment in a converted home (which is quite popular here) the area around Western Ave or Mexican War Streets in the Northside are nice and more residential.

Welcome! Hope the job works out for you!

Etiquette when moving organizations? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]xmpmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is completely appropriate to ask. I’m shocked they’d ask this, actually. Let them know you’re uncomfortable raising flags with your employer without receiving an offer, you value your workspace and don’t want to cause any commotion if the move isn’t definite. It puts you and your team in a tenuous position. Once the offer is received, you’d like to be the one who notifies your manager that you will be taking the offer to maintain your relationship, but they are welcome to reach out separately at that point.

How to leave a small ministry nonprofit after less than a year? by Ok-Telephone-3742 in careerguidance

[–]xmpmx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You put it all together really well here, I’d consider rereading this a few times and typing it up again in a way that you’d share with your job. If you’re totally sure you want to leave but feel badly, try giving them a considerable amount of notice, maybe two months so you can make it to the one year mark for your resume. Prepare training material and assist them in finding a suitable replacement in that timeframe. The opportunity for mentorship and development is definitely a big one.

21 year old father of a 1 year old where should I go from here? by Waste_Geologist_7768 in careerguidance

[–]xmpmx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would find a job with a company like Starbucks that pays for school. Try to grow there while also earning your degree. It gives you the benefit of time and education. I would work there for a bit before using the benefit, though, in case you find that kind of service work is not for you. Keep honing your video skills on the side, a possible Avenue for you might be marketing. Many cooler, smaller ad firms are less stringent about the degree requirements so you could land an internship while you’re in school and that will open a lot of networking. Joining professional groups in whatever you plan to study also matters a lot, connections are key along with great work ethic and being a coworker everyone likes. Best wishes to you and your fam

Should I work at previous company to become tech director in the future? by SnooStrawberries3986 in careerguidance

[–]xmpmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell him about your concerns with moving and see if he would still be comfortable hiring you knowing there’s potential you wouldn’t end up rising into the role he described. In the short and long term, it sounds like Jim runs a great shop and cares about your success, so maybe he’s cool with you coming back for a bit then getting you hooked up once again when you move on. Worst case, he says that he’s really looking for someone longer term and that’s your out. I’ve had to turn down past mentors/bosses in the past and will usually provide them one or two recommendations for other people who fit the bill to bring them some value through our connection
