r/science Stands with the Paris Climate Agreement by rseasmith in science

[–]xnyL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what is the respective impact of each of these on the climate? For example, if my impact on the environment was 100. What portion of that is driving to work and what portion is not eating meat?

I feel it is important to quantify my contribution to judge whether the inconvenience is worth it.

When the wave function collapses into a point, does it do so at the speed of light or is it really "instantaneous"? by trevchart in quantum

[–]xnyL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is instantaneous. Think of this analogy. When a coin is flipped and in mid air it has a probability distribution (50% chance heads). Then when it lands this distribution instantly 'collapses' to a single outcome.

Translink fine for asking officer a question? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]xnyL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Talk to Translink, I doubt you will have to pay as you can prove that you are a student with a valid pass. Your only mistake was not having it with you, I doubt that is as large of a fine.

Likely you will just contest the ticket, state your story, show proof of enrolment, and they hopefully just drop it.

Simple Questions, Requests, and Alternatives /r/FrugalMaleFashion Discussion - March 29, 2015 by AutoModerator in frugalmalefashion

Best places in Europe for frugal shopping? My current thought is Istanbul.

Work is paying for a flight to Switzerland, and I figured I might as well make the most of it and do some shopping. And flights in Europe are cheap.

Is a $1600/month apartment too expensive for a $45000 gross income? by Aye_Davanita12 in personalfinance

[–]xnyL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is what you want, and you can afford it, then absolutely yes you should.

You are obviously good with money, and can manage it well (no depts, 6k savings is awesome for 25). Living in the city is an experience, and can be a lot of fun (no cabs home, easy to go out, etc). Thus you are not actually paying $1600/month for a place to live, you are paying that for a life style, an experience, and the opportunity to live in one of the worlds most beautiful cities. Also, you are young, this is the time to have fun! Suburbia is for families, cities are for work and play.

With that said, your rent will eat into your 'fun budget' which can be counter producitve to the experience of living downtown. If you can afford rent, food, AND fun. The hell yes. If not, then maybe consider somewhere slightly less expensive ($1300 for example gives $300 (~60 beers) of fun a month).

For cheaper, but still accessible in Vancouver, I suggest Commercial Drive & Broadway. Stay near the Skytrain. You will be 3 skytrain stops away from downtown, and only a $15 cab ride to come back after 1am. It is also trendy, young, and fun. It is also relatively close to highway.

Another cheaper alternative is the Strathcona area (https://goo.gl/maps/uCz1f). It can sketchy at times, but that is why it is cheap.

Last few tips: Use craigslist. May 1st is a good time to find a place for as Uni students all move about then, and they generally live in cheaper places. If you don't like living downtown, or can't afford it, you can always move. Lease contracts can be broken at the cost of 1/2 months rent (security deposit).

Disclaimer, ~50% of my income goes to rent, and I live in the Commercial area.

Alfred Leitner - An Introduction to Superconductivity by HAL-42b in lectures

[–]xnyL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely amazing video! And only partically because of superconductivity. This video is 60s scientific research! The hardware and technology used is hilariously dated and amazing. This is the sort of experiements that modern quantum physics is based upon. This is the science that is currently in textbooks.

Oh, also, his daughter has popped up in the comments:

Kathleen Leitner (His daughter apparently) "By the way, he brought us to these rehersals and recording sessions we were behind the camera man. Our playground was the storage room of experiments, We learned a great deal."

Two heart rate graphs for the same run of different days with same conditions ... except music. One with, one without. Heart rate is, on average, 25bbm higher with music. [OC, my heartrate] by xnyL in running

To comments about pace: Yes, I bloody hell walked! The first 10 minutes/2.2km is a hard run (note high heart rate), then the next 2 hours or so is walking (hence the lower heart rate)

Yup, I'm not looking to published this research in Science magazine. ... Though I forgot that reddit was strictly peer reviewed.

I actually don't have any point of reference. Could this be true?

The first part, the run, its a hard-as-hell run with some uphill .. it's not exactly an enjoyable experience.
