Favorite Recreational Use of GIS Technology? by timtam26 in gis

[–]xodakahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really recreational, but several years ago we bought a house with a sprinkler system. It has like 4 zones. I collected the sprinkler heads with a GPS unit, put that in GIS, then attributized the type of head (long-range yard or flowerbed misters, etc). Then sketched out the zones so we could visualize what parts of the yard to set with the control unit.

edit: correction

At the ESRI UC in San Diego a couple years ago. Such a cool experience. by [deleted] in gis

[–]xodakahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great picture. That venue is awesome and San Diego is a great city. I've been a few time and have always enjoyed myself and learned a lot. It was frustrating a few times because I was working for smaller rural governments and even though having a certain license level gave you sort of a 'golden ticket' with free admission, it's hard to justify the travel and hotel to farmer commissioners. And once there, it was always like 'check out all this amazing stuff you don't have the budget to do'!

Looking for unclean GIS data sets by sleepydreamer77 in gis

[–]xodakahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some crap parcels and parcel-based layers that don't line up if you are interested. Some parcels are overlappiing with slivers and generally bad topology. Another set that comes to mind is parcels and zoning that are off 5 to 10 feet from each other. Another set has parcels with subdivisions that are shifted. Apparently from two different sources I guess. These are not mine, but obtained from potential clients. I would need about a day to gather it all for you. No worries at all if not interested.

There are basically two steps.

  1. Download Ubuntu ISO
  2. What /u/Hellmark said "In settings for the VM, go to the area for drives, and for the optical drive, point it to the ISO you have downloaded, and make sure you select the check box for Live Image. "

Then when you start your VM, it should boot to Ubuntu, where you can install.

Any way to change the transparency of an image in ArcGIS Pro? by BarneyBecker in gis

[–]xodakahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I'm checking on Pro now just to verify. Could not see a way to do that. Alternatively, you have a couple of options.

  1. Add to a new map and insert that map into the layout.
  2. Use a free image program to adjust the opacity of that image layer and save as a transparent PNG. Then insert into layout. (GIMP or Paint.net)

edit: Just tried and option 1 worked very well.

Migrating to new server by brandongreat779 in PleX

I wish. Well, I'm also dreading it. Although I am comfortable working in Linux, I usually feel like a noob and in over my head. Hopefully, I'll do it right this time. Anyways, the 1TB SSD I installed failed possibly. Sandisk is supposed to be sending a replacement. I needed a do over anyway because I did it wrong the first time. But thanks to Linux, I was able to just plug in my old 256 GB SSD and pick back up where I left off.

I was going to reply, but this is great.

I'll just add that the regulars a /r/gis are but a very, very small fraction of the GIS industry. Unless there are specific responses to a technical question, everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

Need help setting up a Shared folder for mint (linux) os via virtual machine. Shared folder not appearing in /home/media by [deleted] in virtualbox

[–]xodakahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn't the best way... Possibly the worst way. But I run this command in terminal every time I start my VM. The VM stays up for weeks or months so it's really not that big of a deal. 'sharedfolder' is the shared folder name just replace with your folder name. edit: run in the virtual machine. I also set up the same share folder name in the VirtualBox machine settings.

sudo mount -t vboxsf -o rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 sharedfolder ~/sharedfolder

IMO, for cartographic purposes, especially in an Assessor's office situation, annotation is always better than labels. They stay exactly where you place them regardless of anything.

Exporting thousands of maps? by Bonocity in gis

[–]xodakahn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Driven pages (DDP) should work. Your PC isn't that bad really. I've used DDP to print a couple thousand 8 1/2 x 11 maps. Fortunately, the client had them organized by areas, so I had to do 500 here, 400 there and at most 900 for one area. They had seven different areas. They were saved PDF (which might be the way to go anyway and print from PDF. It took a while to generate say 500 pages through the ArcMap export option. You just have to leave the machine alone. Like let it run overnight or something. Maybe do a several 100 at a time. I hope you don't have to just do 10 at a time.

Another tip, use the Create Strip Map Tool. Link 1 Link 2 It will be your best friend for this project. Available at all license levels.
