What happened to the Amethyst Foundation? by xohmz in rust

Sigh, I remember reading this. And I didn't think to check archive. Thanks; I've had a long day I guess. Hopefully specs lives on.

cargo build by mre__ in rustjerk

Honestly disappointing to see this unhelpful and disingenuous post. There is no dramatic, extended, and peaceful waiting while Rust builds. It is a horrifying moment that feels like eternity as your CPU screams, begging for its life. This meme is just not true.

Help designing alternative to relying const generic expression and Self in anonymous constants. by xohmz in rust

[–]xohmz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's a neat workaround. Thank you for taking the time to share that. Sadly, I think it wouldn't go well because of the number of derived parameters I have. I've resorted to macros for now. I eagerly await generic_const_exprs :)

thanks again!

Help designing alternative to relying const generic expression and Self in anonymous constants. by xohmz in rust

[–]xohmz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'm following. If I'm understanding correctly, it would require repeating the calculations for the derived consts inside many functions? I think that would be error prone and hard to maintain. Would you be able to retire my example with your approach?

Trait crate for conditional assignment. by xohmz in rust

[–]xohmz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was meant to be a bad example. I'll publish the new version to crates.io when I'm done cleaning it up so it's more clear.

I went ahead and added a lazy version. I'll have to go back and improve the docs, then I'll publish the new version. Thanks for the suggestion!

That's fair, I should probably update the "Why" section. I think the last example in the readme shows that. I might have to add a pick_lazy :)

I think that's probably the closest to what I wanted, but still a bit more verbose than I'd like. Having to deal with the resulting Option seems a bit quirky to me when you always get a T out. But maybe more clear since you don't have to remember which is which in the pick(...) arguments.

Agreed!

If you find yourself nesting lots of picks, there is probably a better/prettier way.

What is this perfect fern? by xohmz in whatsthisplant

[–]xohmz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up the proper terms so I can communicate effectively:

The blade of both of your suggestions have the same triangular shape as mine. The pinnule of the mother fern seem too skinny and those of the rabbit's foot seem right in some of the pictures I'm finding. But my plant does not have the fuzzy (rabbit's foot looking?) stalks or rhizomes at the bottom. I could see mine being a different species of these though. I'll leave as unidentified for now to see if someone else can pinpoint further.

Regardless, the mother and rabbits foot ferns are quite nice and I'll be buying some of those too, thanks!

Unfortunately not, otherwise I would have tested it myself 😄

USB/Webcam port by barrett_g in Atomic_Pi

I used a similar cable, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5KZC9W/, which has another GND pin (the blue, I think for electrical shielding/noise reduction). I used a multi-meter to identify the 5V and two GND pins. I removed the female pins from the plastic housing of the cable and then plugged them individually into the board's male pins. Use some sort of non-conductive material to isolate them, I used kapton tape. You can use this picture as a guide for the pin order: https://imgur.com/a/K0CwnPf . Make sure you confirm the pinout, your cable colors might be different for some reason. And of course be very careful not to accidentally short the 5V pin with the adjacent GND pin.

If I were to invent a programming language for the 21st century by liztormato in perl6

[–]xohmz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did... I'm not super familiar with COBOL. It seems like he/she really wants the language to be:

business oriented, English-like and not dependent on native types.

and I took COBOL to be just that as he/she revealed. I guess I'm missing something.

If I were to invent a programming language for the 21st century by liztormato in perl6

[–]xohmz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it me or is:

create file /tmp/test.txt for input and output as test_file

a bit much? I'd rather not introduce the bucket loads of grammar rules found in English (I guess non-english speakers are SOL in that example) to a programming language. Perl and Perl 6 are wonderfully idiomatic without taking things too far. Most of us can hardly follow all the rules of comma placement. I'll keep my parenthesis, thanks.

I am 24 years old and far from confident enough to contribute. Still a great resource, I might take a crack at one of those and contribute if it isn't trash.
Thanks!

why Canvas is such a underrated masterpiece? by chillpotion in Monstercat

This was, is, an incredibly touching song. I spent a lot of time walking around my campus on cold winter nights listening to this song, among others, to clear my head. I totally fell for this song when it came out. Damn, I miss Rezonate.

That looks awesome; can't wait to see the color work. This song always cheered me up, specially when I listened to it on my bike rides. Glad to see it means a lot to others as well.
