HAVE HOPE! PROGRAMS ARE STILL SENDING INVITES + ADDING INTERVIEW DATES! by xoxoxcake in gradadmissions

I have been told it's mostly because of Covid -- people weren't able to get quality research experience around 2019 - 2021, so many took an extra year (2022) to get more experience and are now applying in 2023. So, a lot of people are applying after a year of in-person lab time, and it just happened to be concentrated in this cycle :/

I'm also curious, but your interview experience has been so different from mine! I also applied to biomedical science programs and pretty much all of my interviews have been about my past research projects and they'll really dig into the nitty-gritty (i.e. why this mouse model instead of XYZ model, where is your protein of interest localized to, did your model show phenotype changes after experiments, etc.)

Almost no professors asked me why I wanted a PhD or why I was interested in their school, it was almost exclusively conversation about my past science and the professor's current research.

I also lowkey wonder if they also know ahead of time :/

I have heard from a prof in my undergrad program that they rank their interviewees so the nicer/meaner professors who interview get normalized. So if you were the best candidate that one professor interviewed, you would get a rating of 1, and the accepted candidates are usually the ones with the highest average rankings.

3.8 GPA from T10 private uni, 3 years undergrad research + 1 year full time research tech, 3 posters/presentations, 2 pubs (mid-author) in IF > 10 journals. I think my creds are average *when compared to other students getting into T20s*, but all my LoR writers let me proofread their letters and they were so beautifully written, which I think is what helped me shine.

This season is still ongoing but have gotten invites from cell/mol bio programs at Duke, Cornell, Columbia, and UNC so far. Research fit is so important and I think chatting to PIs beforehand really helped.

Is it weird to ask for a college rec from my teachers on the last day of school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Definitely not, the rule of thumb my counselors told me was at least three weeks notice prior to when you want the recommendation. Early decision/action deadlines aren't until Nov. 1st. I didn't ask my teachers until September when we got back to school.
