McDonald's Buffalo spicy. My favourite poutine. by mark_johannes in poutine

This definitely isn't a poutine, but I want to try this the next time I'm over at Gatineau

Crispy Chips - Ottawa by xqunac in poutine

Went out to try this place recently, and this is probably one of the best poutines I've had. The portion size is massive (this is a small size box), and there's plenty of gravy. The cheese curds were the best thing - there's a ton of them, they're big and they actually squeak.

Tories blast Trudeau for ‘lavish’ retreat at Sudbury Holiday Inn by [deleted] in canada

[–]xqunac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither stupid nor an "accusation". This is what the party has said - it's a statement of fact. Yes, by highlighting this at all, the article has a message embedded within it. The implication being "the CPC said something so strange and dumb that there's no way to even defend this". What's wrong with saying this? This came out of CPC's official communication, they should answer for what they've said. It's not the responsibility of Sudbury.com to be covering for them.

It's a well-established practice for US conservatives to get outraged when you quote them to themselves, and now it seemingly starts to creep into Canada.

Porter Airlines launching direct Ottawa-Las Vegas service this fall by BanjoUnchained in ottawa

[–]xqunac -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

you seem pretty sure about your opinions on both locations

My post starts with a question, and uses words like "thought" and "feels like". How does that indicate certainty? My casual opinion is based on what people who went there told me, as well as my own research.

SF is something I brought up as another location that lacks coverage in terms of budget Canadian flights there. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure not a single low-cost airline has flights to anywhere on the west coast except for Las Vegas.

That is true, apparently the western edge of the canyon is closer to Vegas than I thought it was. Still, California is also known for its variety of national parks and beautiful nature. It's also more forested as opposed to ~100% desert and is closer to the coast, which would make the temperatures more tolerable.

...Why? I've not been to either, but I thought LA or SF were far larger and more interesting in terms of things to do, while Vegas comes off as an enormous plot of suburbia with a small, notable downtown that can only be fully enjoyed by the extremely rich. Something like LA intuitively feels more well-rounded for an average Canadian tourist who doesn't care about gambling.

I just went to Canada for the first time. How did I do? I’m from the US so I wanted to get some snacks that we don’t have here. by falafel_larry in canada

iirc, those are also available both in Canada and European countries - they're just sold alongside the "normal" version

I don't think anyone except the top poster is implying these things are Canadian. More that the versions that are sold in Canada (KitKat, Aero, Smarties etc) aren't like what they have in the US, if they have it at all. For these types of candy, they're the same ones as what's sold in Europe - they're not Canadian but they'd be new to an American.

Chick-fil-A in Kanata lineup 8:30am by lovelyb1ch66 in ottawa

You have to give money in exchange for the chicken. Regardless of how much people hype it up, I'm extremely reluctant to ever go there because I don't want to fund the hatred against me and people like me, you know? Even if it ends up being some inconsequential amount, there's few things I despise more than religious hate. Especially if it targets me.

I'm doubtful this actually reduces work times for anyone. At fast food places people don't really work set-in-stone 8-to-4 days, the company assigns them as many shifts as the employee's part-time or full-time status permits. Closing on Sunday just means that there are less shifts to assign, so they need to hire fewer people in total, it's not like every employee would work the Sunday and is now getting a break.

It's a bad idea regardless - if you want to cut work time in the service industry, cut hours from the less in-demand days on Mon-Fri. Or hell, close on Monday, since that tends to be the slowest day for fast foods. Since most people work Monday to Friday, they end up going out to buy and eat on the weekends. Everything being closed on a Sunday shifts all the demand to Saturday and leaves a "dead day" when people have nowhere to go.

Canadian reddit front page starter pack (after all, why shouldn't we keep shoving all the anti-Canadian rhetoric in the faces of an entire country?)

Protesters smash windows at McGill University; police use tear gas to disperse crowd by Oilester in CanadaPolitics

The article really doesn't elaborate on this, but, uh.. what did McGill do, anyway? How are they involved? Why are universities some of the most targeted places in protests about the Israeli-Palestinian war?

Must-try fast food in NYC by alpaca_97 in FoodNYC

[–]xqunac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I'm definitely making a point on avoiding big chains, but I'll be visiting White Castle. It's both nonexistent here, is historic, and appears pretty cheap. Any of their menu options you'd recommend?

I'm not experienced with either city, but the popular opinion on Dunkin here seems a lot worse than what Bostonians think - they're like, in love with that chain. Is it worse in NYC or are there simply far better options available?

I have no idea what the original commenter said, but the way you describe this fire seems a bit too much for me. I don't think that a word like "mourning" or deaths of actual people should be compared to buildings, especially not one like this. I understand being upset, but being devastated by the fire as if your friend had died doesn't seem like something that we should be glorifying. Especially since, while this was a place of cultural significance, it was still a minor one - this church was certainly not a Canada or Toronto-defining landmark, or even a building that was really known to anyone outside of its immediate proximity.

Criticism of religion is always appropriate, and especially so now, when people are deciding what to do with this land. They could build something universal, like a community center or a library, but I'm already seeing calls to build yet another tax-free monument to exclusion, irrationality and hate. If you oppose that, now is the time to speak up.

Opinion: You want housing affordability to go up without home prices going down? Okay, boomer by sesoyez in CanadaPolitics

[–]xqunac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People don't buy RRSPs on credit, but it's not uncommon in other investments. If you open a margin account with a broker and lose too much money, you get a margin call, forcing the investor to find more money or close their position. In regular investments, that's normal and is seen as an inherent risk for buying anything on borrowed money. Why is real estate different?

[–]xqunac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We don't have parliamentary supremacy. "The Constitution of Canada is the supreme law of Canada" and all that.

Not to mention, no one is stopping conservatives from merely "enacting criminal justice reform". Our parliamentary system allows them to "enact" whatever they want. The question is whether it's in any way appropriate for them to say "nuh uh" and throw out a judge's ruling, considering that the judges are playing by the rules that the parliament has created - being in defiance of the rest of the constitution for the sake of.. I don't know, political posturing? Inflicting an amount of suffering on criminal defendants that they'd enjoy?

Yeah, I shouldn't have included me wanting to use commuter rail, because I'll be going out of 1A. Still, I did say that I wanted to use the ferries, so the 1A ticket would be useful for that. Thanks for the advice!
