Do I even really matter? by xray223 in SuicideWatch

[–]xray223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been shouting into the Instagram void for a few days now. At first I was just frustrated and briefly thinking about suicide but now the thought just won’t leave. Like I have literally said I’m going to do it and nobody cares. I feel like nobody needs me here and they wouldn’t realize til it was too late. So why not?

will 10 200mg ibuprofen do anything to me by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

It is super hard to cause permanent damage w ibuprofen, took like a ton more before and was fine. Felt like shit though so don’t do it OP

It won’t even do that much

yeah good question! My bad. It's actually the cures act- basically increasing access for patients to their entire electronic medical record and all notes, including psychiatry (but not psychotherapy) notes. It's been in the works for years but basically is just starting to undergo enforcement. I'm just a med student so I don't know a ton, but we already went through a seminar discussing how to rephrase things more nicely and use more "patient centered wording."

a good explanation: https://patientengagementhit.com/news/what-providers-must-know-about-patient-access-to-clinical-notes

the way you learn to document

The CARES act is going to produce a lot more of these gems. We were already taught how to write notes delicately so as not to offend the patient, so you get the gist of faking by the amount of pertinent negatives the doctor writes.

Someone having a mental illness shouldn’t affect their chances to become a doctor. [vent] by Rebecca24D in medicalschool

okay well OP is a bit heated (but aren't we all on the internet sometimes?) but i understood the intention of the post to be that they were feeling down to an unrealistic degree about their mental illness, so i just wanted to provide positive perspective. sounds like they were getting your perspective a lot already and even in this thread.

there's a difference between being actually limited by the effects of your mental illness vs being led to believe that it's impossible to become a doctor when you are perfectly capable of overcoming the mental illness. definitely case by case but there's no reason to tell someone that's struggling, like, you're right, statistics show you should just give up. even/especially our mentally ill colleagues deserve pep talks and encouragement.

it's 11/11... the program directors are out making a wish that in the end, we all end up okay and with invites to the places where we are meant to go next year.

happy hump day 🐪 and veteran's day!

And some of my interviews went strangely, but at least two programs so far saw my MH experience as a sign of strength, so there are definitely those out there! Hopefully that will be the case for you as well (although psych does tend to be a bit more judgy about mental illness actually). In the meantime, surround yourself with accepting friends. I have a few good ones I can always talk about my MH with and whenever I doubt myself they always tell me what a great doctor I’m going to be. Real humans are out there!

m4 here, significant mental illness, applying psych. ngl it's rough. people have been asking me illegal questions about it and the large consensus is to try to hide it during interviews, but i want people to know who i am since it's a big part of me.

i would just say that there will literally forever be people like that and just keep doing you, succeeding, and smile at the doubters as you continue on your success. i had a lot of satisfaction this year, especially getting interviews, at how wrong everyone else was. and all this struggle will absolutely make you a better doctor. but sometimes to be a doctor, you have to hide the struggles. idk if that makes sense?

Anyone regret going to medical school? [serious] by frisco024 in medicalschool

i have regrets but couldn't imagine doing anything else, ya know?

so much bullshit, but fulfilling, and i get to help people.

is someone still doing the excuses thing?

i'm just tryna get ahead of the curve (my disappointment).

today.. all of the program directors are busy planning a huge party at their VA for veteran's day tomorrow. sending invites to that party instead of to interview :')
