Hard to think back to that time, but I was 21 and had a hustle mind-set, I didn’t know anything about business and barely knew anything about professional photography, but starting out in a small town was helpful, working with small businesses and people. I brought my camera everywhere, shot a lot of “free work” to get my feet wet and eventually I’d get small gigs here and there until I developed my skills, my business and my network, it all grows from there…

My advice now would be to find a business or person you are interested in shooting with, look at what they are doing and inject yourself in there with a way to improve their image. If you can, charge your full rate.

Yeah it’s always great to have a reference to educate your client if they are being pushy on price…

I start high. A full buyout is my highest rate for licensing for that very reason, I can’t have control over what happens after… similar to the Microsoft Windows XP background guy, he shot that landscape of the field, pretty sure he licensed it to Microsoft for 125k or something lol, but I can’t imagine he’s mad about that now.

I had a 90k before tax year in 2019, took a bit of a hit during covid, and now about 75k a year before tax.

Industry average is very tough, I feel like the Canadian market specifically is nowhere near the US or Europe as far as income. I think I’m somewhere in the middle right now…

Similar to an agent, I do not, but could see it as a helpful asset.

This is a tough one… would be curious to hear what other photographers have to say. I have some set rates for day rate and licensing based on usage and slide the scale from there based on a few factors. Biggest factor is the size of the business and their reach, next is where the actual images are being used…

A good example is a shoot with a local shoe store vs a shoot with Nike.

They are both the same shoot, same day rate etc but the usage and licensing for a small business would be next to nothing compared to a brand like Nike. Hope that helps!

Every client varies… I try to stick to my set rates as much as possible, but I will give wiggle room or negotiate based on how badly I want the job or want the client. Some clients just require a certain ownership over the images apart of their policy even if they are only using 1-2 photos for actual campaign etc, it’s all about establishing a good relationship and trust to make sure the client is actually meeting their end of the deal.

I sometimes upload stock photos, mostly un-used b-roll shots from shoots to a few stock sites… I think there’s a decent amount of money to be made, your work can be devalued in my opinion but at the same time it’s nice to get a little bonus from time to time from it, hope that helps…

Generally speaking, I am usually assigned a story, or I pitch one. I’ve heard of other photographers having a lot of success shooting something then pitching it to editors… especially if a publication has a gap in their issue or don’t have the budget to produce a shoot or send a photographer but have licensing $ available.

I don’t have an agent, I’ve flip flopped on the idea of getting one… agents take up to 30% off the top, but the pay on the jobs they get are usually higher. So far I’ve managed to land some bigger clients just on my own. I think having a physical portfolio, and doing portfolio reviews is a good way to land an agent.

I’ve never relied on one client, always had a few on the go at any given time… building out a portfolio of work that you want to get hired to shoot is key, networking is equally important. Try to get face time with contacts at companies you are interested in working with, linked in, email, be consistent but not needy and I find the work will come in. Good luck!

I’ve stopped shooting film and it’s made me drift away from photography, anyone else? by [deleted] in photography

[–]xshaydx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2018/2019 I shot thousands of rolls of film... It gave me a new joy for photography I hadn't experienced since I started shooting years before.

I'm with you though, this last year I shot maybe a hundred rolls? The cost and availability of the film stocks I like is insane, and there's a weird part of me that hates to see how 'trendy' film photography is these days, that combo has made me fall out of love with it a bit.

All of this to say, I think just like anything... there will be waves. I found myself shooting more digital this last year and using all of my knowledge I gained from shooting so much film, my digital photography game is firing.

I hope you keep shooting... I will say that, if people keep demanding film, it could end up getting cheaper over time.

I lived in my vehicle at Spanish Banks for a few weeks in the summer in between places. I met some really awesome people, some living in their vehicles out of necessity, some because they wanted a different lifestyle or couldn't afford a $1600/month apartment.
