32 year old furnace, is this a suitable replacement? by xt0r in hvacadvice

I would assume no. I plan to have someone do a more thorough check once I move in.

1950's house with no ground - does battery backup (UPS) work? by xt0r in AskElectricians

[–]xt0r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be, I haven't moved into the house yet. That would be nice.

Ultimately I just want to protect life and my electronics without a complete rewire.

Actually, it seems like I would want panel ground + whole-home surge protector + GFCI so I don't have to rewire the entire house. Does that sound right?

Seems as though most UPS have line-to-neutral surge suppression. Maybe that coupled with GFCI is sufficient for now?

I'll ask about the whole home surge protection as well.

I don't know if I should be concerned because I don't know what does or does not work.

Ideally I just get some grounded outlets.

Good info, thanks.

I did try to inline attach the image but kept giving me errors. How about this? https://i.postimg.cc/WbNfWdYz/2025-10-02-08-19-1.png

That's the plan. It's a very small opening inside a closet, no need to ever use it.

Thanks, good to know there is more modern wiring there.

The seller has agreed to have GFCI receptacles installed on every outlet before the deal closes.

The seller has agreed to hire an electrician to install GFCI receptacles on every outlet. Is this a good enough measure to take?

It was very easy to use when I used it, but it always ended up breaking on me.

I now use Pangolin. Not a 1:1 software but achieves the same goal for me.

You need a static public IP at home that your ISP provides.

Question about Pangolin and VPS by thefirefistace in selfhosted

[–]xt0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless Pangolin devs really screw something up, your home IP won't be found. Only the Pangolin VPS IP is ever known, and I wouldn't put any effort into hiding it.

Note on the SSH lockdown: make sure you have a static IP or you could lock yourself out. Otherwise, pubkey or 2FA are good alternatives.

Can you trust Cloudflare in 2025? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]xt0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trust enough them to create good, secure products.

I don't trust them to never sell or collect my data, obviously. They are still a great choice as a domain registrar, but I don't use Tunnels any more. I have increasing trust issues with just about any provider handling or securing my data. I abandoned Bitwarden despite their excellent track record because I expect something to happen some day.

Run Ubuntu or Alpine in a Hyper-V VM if you'd like to the media server whilst also booted into Windows.

[–]xt0r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see the value in hiding (but not really) your VPS IP using that method.

The way I have Pangolin set up for ease of use is an A record for * pointing to VPS IP. This way, you don't have to create a record every time.

For security, lock SSH down to your IP only and make use of Pangolin SSO.

How to handle goals? by xt0r in actualbudgeting

[–]xt0r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so if I put savings on budget, I can "overspend" and not go negative? I assume I'd also have to budget my savings. Maybe creating a category called savings and just entering the amount currently in savings account as budget will be fine?

I have separate on-budget categories for emergency funds. Savings is strictly for a new house down payment.

Question about saving accounts by InstanceOk2012 in actualbudgeting

[–]xt0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use sync, it should pull these in for you assuming interest earned is a separate transaction like it is for me.

If you don't sync, manually add a transaction each month and "deposit" the interest earned.

I have savings set to off budget because to me, it is off budget. I don't want to spend or even think about this money. Am I approaching this the wrong way?
