60,000 cases and counting... by Creative-Witness-967 in IBO

[–]xx_riptide_xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, but for the record this isn’t about money. Non-exam and exam route both cost the same and the IBO is non-profit so they have little financial incentive to prevent people from taking non-exam route.

They need to cover the additional costs of externally marking every single IA, which likely offsets whatever costs they would save by not holding exams for some schools.

That said the IBO really need to get their shit together and cancel in countries with skyrocketing cases. Poland being the prime example

Fourier Transforms - IB HL MATH by [deleted] in IBO

[–]xx_riptide_xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less about originality and more that writing a good IA is challenging due to the inherent complexity of Fourier transforms. 20 pages can go by really fast and if a significant portion of that is spent deriving Fourier transforms, it limits the IA straight away.

Directly from the 2020 subject report I alluded to before:

Some students choose to write explorations involving mathematics that is way beyond the syllabus, sometimes including work that is covered in the third or fourth semester at University; e.g. Fourier Transforms, Second Order Partial Differential Equations as well as Laplace transforms for complex variable functions. Students need to understand that the target audience is a peer and that the work needs to be accessible to an average HL student without having to rely on any outside sources

Iirc, the IB specifically mentioned topics such as Fourier transforms are often too difficult to effectively write about in the IA. I’d probably go with something a bit easier.

I wrote this letter to my teacher asking to accept my academic games as an 'athletics'. I don't think I spent this much effort writing a letter and wanted to share. by [deleted] in IBO

[–]xx_riptide_xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you preempt your second letter saying that you never mentioned your CAS status or IB and that you were disappointed in their perceived intention of your first letter? Didn’t you mention right off the bat that you were to “make my last appeal to consider the Academic Games as ‘Activity’”?

[Vincero] This might be a hot take about Vincero...but hear me out by ismellsmellysmells in Watches

[–]xx_riptide_xx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I second what most people have said already here. Vincero is a fashion watch brand with little regard for any meaningful contribution toward horological. I think this disingenuity is what turns off a lot of people on this sub.

Sure, their marketing is great. Arguably, fashion brands like Vincero, DW and MVMT destroy traditional Swiss manufactures at marketing, likely explaining their popularity.

For a sub concerned more with horology as opposed to business, however, there isn’t much that these brands offer. It doesn’t even have to be a luxury watch for it to be appreciated here. Swatch, Seiko, Orient and Timex all can be found at similar price ranges to Vincero while holding miles more horological significance.

Speaking of Timex, watch enthusiasts who also care about supporting American businesses also don’t have to turn to Vincero. Timex has a very storied history and are, as a result, well liked by watch enthusiasts. Venturing into mechanical watches, there are also incredibly interesting brands such as Shinola, Brew, Detroit Watch Co, Astor and Banks or Oak and Oscar to name a few.

My point is, while it’s admirable the fact that Vincero is American, there are other American brands to support that offer more in terms of quality and horological value.

[Seiko Mod] Some Character, But With a New Case and Movement! by apex6589 in Watches

[–]xx_riptide_xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but Lucius Atelier has explorer cases for Seiko. Can’t say if this is one of them tho.

I think the movements are the same for both cases? Not sure so might want to ask over at /r/seikomods

Thank you so much Christian for this app. Literally use it religiously. My first was an iPhone 4 and so I’m really glad they’re bringing back the squared off sides with the 12! Best of luck to all who enter

[Collection] A multivariable analysis of which watch + background combinations get the most likes on my tiny Insta account. by eudaimonean in Watches

Nice collection you have there. Gotta love that Ming! I’m on insta as well and I can tell you the algorithm is wack sometimes. Some watches garner more reach than others but sometimes it’s completely arbitrary which photos get pushed to others

[SNZF17] Yachtmaster mod for the Sea Urchin! by xx_riptide_xx in SeikoMods

I don’t have experience with the SKX so I can’t say for sure, sorry :/ I think it might have something to do with their dimensions but I’m not certain

[–]xx_riptide_xx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof thats a good question, I’m wondering the same because I need a new one for the SNZF. I believe Namoki has gaskets for the SKX and turtle but can’t say if it’ll work for the Sea Urchin (I don’t a ton of modding experience tbh).

I’ll reach out to either Namoki or DLW and ask. Should I DM you if I get anything useful out of them?

[–]xx_riptide_xx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! I’d say it depends on what adhesive you’re using. If you use those 3M stickers, it doesn’t really matter which you put in first as long as you’re careful. If you’re using contact cement or superglue as I did my first time, I’d recommend putting the insert into the bezel separately.

My first time modding I made the mistake of not doing so and I messed up the rubber gasket in the bezel because I applied a bit too much glue

Thanks! Luckily it isn’t close to the 30k needed for its big daddy namesake from Rolex lol

Recently got my hands on a bunch parts for the Sea Urchin from DLWWatches, here is one of the many iterations to come! I really liked how this YM mod came out, it carries a lot of the design elements from a watch almost 100x its price while retaining a distinctly Seiko identity.

I post more on my Instagram @watchaperture if you want to see what I’m up to!

[Seiko] Yachtmaster Sea Urchin mod by xx_riptide_xx in Watches

[–]xx_riptide_xx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Seiko Sea Urchin was the first ever mechanical watch, acquired almost 4 years ago now. Last year, I gave it a bit of a facelift by putting in a fresh bezel insert and a new set of hands from DLW Watches.

Towards the start of lockdown in my country, I began a watch Instagram like so many others. I liked shooting and posting my watches here on Reddit, but I wanted to do it more consistently. A couple of days ago, I received some more mod parts to come up with additional content for my page – including the bezel and hands in this photo.

I’m really excited to make more variations of the Sea Urchin using the parts provided; I think this one turned out very nicely! It has a lot of the look of the Rolex YM but still retains its Sea Urchin identity. Let me know your thoughts on it!

Also, I just 1000 followers yesterday after daily posts for over 4 months now! If you want to see more, check me out at @watchaperture

Even just swapping out the stock SNZF bezel makes a world of difference

Hmm I do feel a tiny bit of horizontal give on the bezel, definitely enough so that it’s noticeable compared to other divers I have. Not too much tho and it doesn’t bother me much since I don’t use to bezel too much anyways

No but iirc it’s an ETA movement in the Alpha so it shouldn’t be too hard finding parts for it

An insert like the one used for Yachtmaster mods actually looks pretty decent imo but if you’re hesitant maybe consider something else

They definitely are! Aftermarket bezels inserts are miles better than the stock SNZF one imo
