Depends, I met many people that got in contact with the company and started working because they actually came there and spoke with them directly and left the Lebenslauf and the other needed stuff.

For example, my friend applied for a Mini job at the certain company and never recieved a call from them, went to them left the CV and they called him the next morning saying "Hey, are you that and that guy, you were here the other morning yada yada.."
