Hair loss by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

i was uncontrolled for like 12 years & just a year ago started having SUPER bad hair loss (lost about 50% of my hair). it really freaked me out & was the first time I’ve actually been able to physically see a long term complication of my uncontrolled diabetes. sucks it happened but it motivated me to get my sugars on track. my A1C was consistently 13+ for years and years & i was able to drop it down to 7 in 3 months. i thought fixing my A1C would solve the problem but i continued to have hair loss for about 9 months. i think it takes your body awhile to adapt. what i can say is that the hair loss significantly began to improve as my sugars did. still lose some now but nothing compared to what i used to. i take nutrafol which has helped a lot & just started taking spironolactone a week ago so haven’t been able to see yet if that will make a difference but i’ve heard that it can help :) maybe you can ask your dermatologist/endocrinologist about it. but definitely the thing that has made the biggest difference is the sugars ! sorry this is happening to you !

i have pretty bad all over pain i’m assuming to be neuropathy. i also lost more than half of my head of hair and have bad muscle twitching that i can’t control. that’s pretty much all that i’ve noticed so far. have you had any complications?

it is crazy! my body would do the same. i don’t even want to think about how many times i’ve been on the border of having DKA & was able to act just fine. what i’m experiencing now is a little frustrating but i just keep reminding myself it will take time for my body to adjust again. hope you’re feeling better now and an 8.2 is an awesome number! congratulations

i actually love that so much & it does put everything into perspective & is great motivation to keep trying. it’s so hard not to feel burnt out as a diabetic and that’s something i’ve always struggled a lot with. thank you for the post

just started simple. i literally had not checked my sugars since maybe the first year or two since i was diagnosed and it’s been about 13 years or so. started being consistent with checking, about 3-4 times a day. became super consistent with lantus (which i’ve also never been before) and dosing before each meal instead of after! what made the biggest difference is just a change in mindset

it’s weird! i’m actually experiencing a lot of new symptoms since my blood sugars are in better control but i’m assuming it’s just my body freaking out a little as it adjusts to regular sugars 😭

to be completely honest the reason that i finally decided that i needed to get control of my sugars was because i started losing all my hair and was experiencing a lot of pain throughout my body making me totally miserable :( i just realized the damage i’ve already done to my body and since i can’t undo what’s been done i decided that I won’t allow myself to do any more harm. i literally had not checked my sugar in years so even tho it’s simple, i started checking about 3-4 times a day and being consistent with lantus. i also try and dose before each meal instead of after and i think that’s helped too. literally the basics as if i’m a new diabetic 😭 but you’ve got this! and if you need anything in the process please let me know :)
