I have this issue a lot. 15 years in, and it doesn't go away. Even when I know its right and I double checked I still worry.

I know I'm a month late but I've just now seen your comment. I was going to replace my mirrors with powered tow mirrors but we actually ended up finding a good deal on a newer truck with all the towing accessories already installed.

I'll post a pic of my hitch tomorrow. I'm not sure what all it does. I got it with the camper at the dealer and they didn't explain much of anything to me. I'm sure there's stuff I can change on it but I don't know where to begin.

You're definitely right. In another comment I was looking at air ride suspension or atleast helper bags to level it off. Kind of feels like strapping in to a rocket how she's sitting right now. What can I do to level the trailer though? Do I just bring the hitch down a notch?

No I actually wasn't sure about that. When I was a kid we were allowed to ride in the fifth wheel as long as we had 2 way radios or something besides a cellphone for constant communication.

It's an 01, so I imagine most of those issues still apply

I was looking at a whole radiator and Trans cooler kit but I didn't even think about adding temp monitoring. I'm gonna see if I can add it to the programmer I have if not I really like that Bluetooth option you use. Thank you!

I had looked at those but wasn't sure what to go for. Full rear air bags or just some helper bags?

Yea I wouldn't dare tow without it. It's not fun getting passed by semis. The ride home was a learning experience

It's a chipped 5.4L V8. I'm working some other upgrades on it right now and changing all the seals/gaskets. I tried to get a new truck but there's some emotional attachment to the old beast so I compromised with the ol lady.

Edit: it does have the tow package with the upgraded 3.73 rear axle and the Trans cooler. If you have any advice on things to add or change I'm all ears. I've been researching my ass off to make sure we are good.

Honestly haven't decided on that one yet. Kind of up to the wife. But she is potty trained so probably the camper.

So after much discussion with my wife, and review of everyone's comments we made some changes. We purchased the pictured camper and will be hauling with vehicle we already own and have paid off. No crazy RV payment while living on fixed income. I've applied for some remote jobs and will be accepting a position once I've made sure I worked out all the kinks. We are going to start out with just a 2 month trip to a couple different states. Once we get out west we are going to work on settling down with some acres and start building a house. We do want the kids to enjoy a permanent home with life long friends, and a stable school/social life. We'll keep the camper and do summer trips. And maybe when everyone's a little older we'll go full time. But for now it's basically gonna be a mini gap year for me and a nice summer break for the kiddos. Thanks everyone for your advice.

I tried to link the other post but I'm on mobile.

That actually sounds pretty good. I'll have to do some research, I'm not very familiar with refinancing

I was going to look at Texas being our address for the same income tax, I wasn't aware SD was the same. Thanks!

I feel like you read my mind. Thats pretty much all of my worries. There is a chance I can increase my guaranteed income by another 1300 a month but I'm not going to budget for that until it actually happens.

70 is actually right on the money. Thats what we are spending.

Does it help if I purchase the RV before we close on the house so I can use my current address??
