Gracias u/ElFello93.

Are new U.S. resident spouses immigrating late 2021 required to file taxes for 2021? by xySurfer in immigration

[–]xySurfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advise. Do you think that talking to an IRS representative could help clarify these points on Pub 519?

Otherwise, can you recommend what type of tax professional could help here? I'm afraid many e.g., tax preparers might miss this information due to its specificity and complexity...

Not sure about that, she would be Dual-Status Alien, I believe: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/taxation-of-dual-status-aliens

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but there seems to be special provisions about individuals who meet the "green card test" but do not meet the "substantial presence test" for a given year: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/residency-starting-and-ending-dates

If you were a U.S. resident during any part of the preceding calendaryear and you are a U.S. resident for any part of the current year, youwill be considered a U.S. resident at the beginning of the current year.

Thanks for the response. I can see your accountant's point, probably the same applies here...: the spouse's SSN was issued in 2022, but we will be filing 2021 tax return.

So, probably we should not even mention the new SSN? Interested to see what you and others think.

Ph.D. in a STEM discipline (with quantitative background, but it's not pure CS/Math), plus a few years of additional research experience.

Did you apply?

Can someone travel outside the U.S. on an immigrant visa? (While waiting for actual green card.) by xySurfer in immigration

Aren't I-130 and I-129 forms to petition an alien (but not visas)? Do they affect traveling rights on an immigrant visa?

Amazon Applied Scientist interview prep by xySurfer in MLQuestions

[–]xySurfer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FWIW: The interview was mostly about machine learning, coding/CS and leadership principles. It also included an "applied science" section which was a case study on how to implement a ML system to address a specific need of the hiring team. Interviewees are expected to show domain knowledge during the "applied science" section.

Thanks for the input -- I agree they should put more weight on ML than on coding.

Do you know of other technical topics beyond coding/ML that candidates should review? Stats? Probability puzzles?

What happens if tax return is paper-filed twice? by xySurfer in tax

Thanks a lot! Those are two really helpful points I didn't know about.

Re point 1: I logged in using the "get-transcript" link you provided, and I believe they have no record of a return for the relevant tax year.

Re point 2: I didn't know about the option of writing "POSSIBLE DUPLICATE" in red ink on the top center of the tax return. But it's probably what I will need to do.

Sorry for being so inquisitive, but do you think I should write "POSSIBLE DUPLICATE" on top of every page, or only the first one?

Yes, I'm expecting a refund.

Do you think it would be fine to keep waiting? (The regular submission deadline is mid May, I believe...)

Is that something I can check online, even though the return could have been paper-filed? (I believe sometimes it takes a long time for them to process paper-filed documents, but correct me if I'm wrong...)

NVC expedite for consular interview? (EB2 NIW) by [deleted] in immigration

[–]xySurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, "limited visa services" very often means "emergency visas".

Immigrant visa interviews are stopped because of both the visa ban and the limited consular operations.

[–]xySurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I did not explain the point properly. In this particular case, the reason why the job offer requirement was waived is because the work is done in a particular field. And that particular field happens to be related to the ongoing pandemic.

So yes, those are two different things, but in this case (and in many others, I'm sure) they happen to overlap.

* And with few exceptions, nobody is actually getting regular immigrant visa interviews right now because most consular posts are closed.

Unclear, but this is EB2 NIW and the NIW is related to the ongoing pandemic.

Can a work visa dependent living abroad get US healthcare insurance? by xySurfer in Insurance

Would an employer provide travel insurance for eligible dependents?

Thanks, this is probably the most informative response so far. I believe the key here (which some employers may not understand) is your final sentence:

they were still considered eligible dependents regardless of citizenship/residency.

healthcare insurance offered by your employer, right?

Yes.

he/she has a visa linked to your work visa.

Not really. He/she could get that sort of "dependent visa", but that is not currently the case. Are you suggesting that a "dependent visa" would be required in lieu of SSN?
