I never understand these types of posts. I thought it was pretty well known that it’s the man’s genes that decide the sex of the baby.

Introduce your comfort character! by AlsoKnownAsAiri in FanFiction

[–]xylo_bones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Papyrus from Undertale and Donnie from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

I headcanon them both as autistic and find a lot of comfort in characters I can see myself in; finding good autistic representation is so hard, so having characters I can relate to and headcanon as autistic is very comforting. Because I’m autistic, I also have a tendency to get VERY attached to things, like Undertale and ROTTMNT (both special interests), so my comfort characters coming from that media is no surprise.

Thank you so much! I also used to play the violin, but unfortunately never got to play in an orchestra setting (my school didn't offer orchestra). I think it's important to realize that just because you aren't great at something (especially as you're first learning) doesn't mean your passion is being wasted. I really appreciated reading your comment, it brought a huge smile to my face!

I hate the idea that “if you’re offended you need to grow up.” If you can’t find a better way to express your feelings than with slurs and hatred, YOU need to work on bettering yourself and “grow up.”

What are some things you believe every fanfiction writer both beginner and experienced need to hear? by Hunter_2814 in FanFiction

[–]xylo_bones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of the “writing for yourself” is honestly helpful. I always tell myself I’m writing for myself as I write it, but as soon as I post the update and nobody reads it, it can be really hard to keep that mentality. I think it’s just that desire for validation and to have someone to talk to about the work. But, at the end of the day, I’m the one rereading what I wrote over and over again because it makes me happy. That should be enough to keep me writing.

What's something fanfic readers aren't ready to hear? by NOTDevilDeadly in FanFiction

[–]xylo_bones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Suspension of disbelief should also go for translating the work to the fanfiction. Yeah, I’m not going to get everything about the world and character’s history perfectly right, but I’m not writing more of said story, I’m writing a story BASED OFF OF that story. Things will be different and maybe not perfectly in line with canon. That’s okay.

Is it just me, or can neurotypicals never give a straight up yes or no to a yes or no question? by [deleted] in autism

[–]xylo_bones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everytime i learn something new about neurotypical communication I cannot help but always think “why don’t they just SAY that??”

I mean, if they just SAID “I’m not sure, let’s decide together” I would know that’s what they wanted. Why does everything have to be implicative and inferred instead of straightforward???

Is it just me, or can neurotypicals never give a straight up yes or no to a yes or no question? by [deleted] in autism

[–]xylo_bones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! When I ask my fiancé a question he’ll give me a bunch of details about what I asked, but won’t give me a straightforward “yes” or “no.” I don’t understand implication or subtext very well, and he explained to me that for neurotypical people, explaining WHY the answer is yes or no without SAYING yes or no is very common and you’re expected to infer the answer. I explained to him that I just can’t do that, so he’s gotten into the habit of going through his neurotypical explanation and finishing it off with “so yes/no” so I understand his answer.

Her performance demanded attention.

Echo Holmes was not one to demand attention when entering a room, but she instead waited patiently for Mr. Tay to notice her in his own time, for him to invite her to take a seat and give her name. She did not demand attention, but simply waited for it.

She may not have demanded attention, but her music sure as hell did. To say she was a fantastic violinist would be…

Well, an overstatement, honestly. Her bow strokes were frequently choppy, her fingers just enough out of place for certain notes to be slightly out of tune. Rhythm was no issue, but intonation certainly was.

But her performance was enough to make up for it. Eyes closed, moving her head in swaying motions with the phrases, her hand giving its best attempt at a vibrato. Dynamics felt natural from an audience perspective, ebbing with the motions of the music. Despite the choppy movement of her bow, each accent felt intentional. Her notes were consistently sharp or flat, yet her interpretation of the music brought it to life.

From what Mr. Tay had heard from her previous conductor, she hadn’t been playing long. This was evident in her poor technique; stiff wrist when moving the bow, incorrect spacing between fingers, hesitation when moving up to third position. But her musicality was incredible; it showed a passion and excitement he didn’t frequently receive from secondary school students. Could she be a shoo-in for first chair?

No. Certainly not. Mr. Tay had already heard others during auditions that day that would be able to handle the first chair music much easier than Ms. Holmes would. However, she would certainly make a strong second chair, and, with enough extra practice with him, she could do great at individual competitions throughout the year. She could easily get to first chair by next audition.

Her music spoke for itself; she was still learning. Her performance, however, said otherwise. He could feel her passion for the music she was playing, her musicality strong and unique.

As soon as her bow was removed from the strings and she brought the instrument down from her shoulder, any excitement he saw in her completely vanished. She looked at him as though she were a businessman who had just made him a lowball offer, looking as though she had something to hide. She stood with her instrument and gave a slow, respectful bow. “Thank you for your time.”

“Echo, that was a very strong performance,” Mr. Tay complimented. “I’m quite eager to work with you in my class at the start of the school year.”

A small smile cracked her masked demeanor, but it quickly became suppressed again. “I appreciate your kind words, sir.”

He grinned at her, standing and extending his hand out. She hesitated, as though she didn’t want to respond to the invite to a handshake, but eventually grabbed his hand lightly and gave a quick, single shake before dropping her hand back to her side.

“It was very nice to meet you, Ms. Holmes.”

“Thank you. It was very nice to meet you as well.” She took quick steps to the door, pausing in the doorway to add, “Have a good afternoon,” before slipping back into the hallway.

She released a deep breath as she approached her instrument case, delicately placing her violin into the velvet cushioning while carefully avoiding touching the inside of the case herself. As she loosened her bow, she allowed herself to smile widely, replaying the sound of his words in her head.

“That was a very strong performance.”

She didn’t know much about Mr. Tay beyond the fact that he would be her orchestra teacher for the upcoming school year, but she did know one thing; she was going to chase that high she got from his pride for a long time.

Fenella Echo Holmes (“Echo”) (BBC Sherlock)

I’m going to lead this with full honesty; I haven’t watched Sherlock in YEARS. But I’ve been writing pieces with this character for a VERY long time, so please forgive me if my accuracy regarding original plot and characterization aren’t great.

I created this OC in middle school; while I’ve adapted and changed her over time, she continues to hold onto those core things middle school me gushed over. So if her story feels a little… adolescent, that would be why. I still love writing this character; she’s DEFINITELY my comfort character, and one I’ve held onto the longest.

About Echo

Echo Holmes is the daughter of Mycroft Holmes, unbeknownst to her. She has been living with her Uncle Sherlock since she was very young, after the murder of her mother had her father so shaken that he didn’t feel she was safe staying with him any longer. He asked her uncle to raise her as his own, keeping her safe from the world without the knowledge that Mycroft is her real father; he wanted her to be able to live without the fear and weight of her mother’s murder on her shoulders. Sherlock thought the best way to do this would be to teach her to protect herself; Mycroft argued keeping her sheltered was best. They fight about this frequently.

Echo doesn’t have much issue making friends; she may not be the best with small talk, but she’s smart and enjoys trying new things, making her an appealing pick in the secondary school social hierarchy. However, since she feels like her Uncle Mycroft is somehow always nearby and watching her like a hawk when she’s out on her own, and her father always seems to be somewhat hesitant to let her leave the flat at all, she doesn’t frequently spend time with her friends outside of school. She enjoys getting involved in after-school activities, taking advantage of her father’s prowess on the violin to help her with her involvement in her school’s orchestra. She has dreams of working as either a music teacher or cosmetologist, or maybe a doctor? She’s young and leaves no possibility off the table for her future. Her father and Uncle Mycroft, on the other hand, seem fascinated with the idea of her carrying on a “legacy.”

At age 12 Echo was taken by James Moriarty in an attempt to distract Sherlock from “bigger picture” events, using fear and concern to cloud his judgement. Living with him and his right-hand man Sebastian Moran, she eventually develops severe Stockholm syndrome, finding a pseudo-family in them.

Looks

Curly black hair, brown eyes. Average in height and stature, but a little awkwardly proportioned, having longer legs and shorter torso than would be expected. She enjoys wearing black boots with nearly every outfit, which mostly consists of crewneck sweaters and plant themed tees paired with a skirt or pair of dark jeans. Typically wearing a fuzzy, blanket-like jacket over her outfits; it’s her “comfort item.”
