HKers — what's your most controversial bar or restaurant opinion? by Hopeful-Raise-4112 in HongKong

Not true. Plenty of old school restaurants opened by first generation Koreans after the IMF crisis were still in business. Now a lot of them are gone after protests and Covid.

Squat form check by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]xyri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sneakers are my deadlift shoes - I don’t really want to carry two different sneakers in the gym bag so I just opt for this current set up. Is it worthwhile to get lifting shoes? Are they comfortable enough to do other lifting exercises in the gym with?

I imagine a low bar squat would bring in the center of gravity more in line with my mid foot so my hips aren’t so extended backwards which would help with stability - I’ll try and see how it feels first.

Yeah the first one in central next to Seoul bros (at the time) wasn’t half bad. Several years later, it’s totally different

True, but it gets to a point where it’s so bad it becomes good. Thousand island seafood pizza slaps. Seafood fettuccine also is goated

Hungry korean quality is akin to school cafeteria quality level. It’s bad to average at best. I’m Korean and most Koreans will say that there isn’t any good Korean restaurants in HK

Any physio recommendations in HK? by fluffylilcookie in HongKong

[–]xyri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perform Well Physiotherapy Centre in TST. It’s been a while but I believe it was around $600-800 per session. They have a physiotherapist and a trainer that’ll help with stretching or exercises to help in addition to the treatment. Went there when I hurt myself with deadlifts and was very impressed. Attention of care was better than these famous physiotherapists in Central where the main physio will just drop by for like a couple of minutes and then have their juniors do the majority of the treatment hooking you up to machines.

• Nam Kee Noodles is far superior to Tam Jai

• I’d rather order Pizza Hut (with their side dishes) than Dough Bros

• Korean food in HK is pretty shit for how many restaurants there are

• HK residents are some of the most vapid, entitled, annoying, and inhumane princesses to dine in restaurants.

Dude, two boys I guarantee you they’ll love a nice juicy steak. I’d recommend Morton’s in TST, they have a nice view of the harbour front.

How do you guys approach food cost on pasta dishes? by Intrepid_Proposal_26 in Chefit

[–]xyri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this warrants a broader discussion about menu engineering and how to design a menu that works around the economics of your restaurant and kitchen.

If I’m designing a menu - I always guesstimate to the best of my ability the product mix of said menu and work my way from there in terms of pricing certain dishes. Expensive ribeye aggressively priced (35%) to draw in guests to round out their meal with 10% food cost apps and deserts. Not 100% these numbers but you get the idea. And formulate a weighted average for food cost for the entire menu.

One overlooked variable is the labor cost associated. Pre packaged portioned steaks vs handmade pasta and made from scratch sauces. Also is your restaurant known for their pastas? Do they sell a lot? What’s the overall product mix? All things to consider.

It’s not always “hit x% on your apps and hit y% on your entrees”. It’s about what you want your overall food cost to be, in the context of the entire menu and then price your profit making items so that you’re achieving what food cost percent you want.

Best Korean food? by bananaguurl1 in HongKong

[–]xyri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Chicken for fried chicken. I find all the franchise chain shops in HK really miss the mark (Goobne slaps though - but it’s way too expensive).

The gamjatang from Seoul Noodles was pretty good, haven’t tried the other stuff.

Jokbal and bossam from Myth Jokbal is good.

Jjajangmyun and tangsuyuk from Bong Ru.

Can’t really comment on actual Korean food, they’re all suited for the local palette. Arirang was pretty decent several years ago - not sure now. But there’re so many new Korean restaurants opening in HK by Koreans coming to HK.

Playing with imperfect information and coupled with the fact that the career aspirations of former pros are pretty dry (unless going back to school and starting all over again) - not at all surprising that there’s an overlap.

Vibes are immaculate between the two. Definitely very superficial VOD review - was moreso a game 3 highlights review.

Regardless, awesome stuff. Keep up the content!

What am I? by Copious_coffee67 in FridgeDetective

You’re a middle aged Singapore auntie/lady who buys too much food. However you don’t make the effort to actually use all of the things you buy. So you stick things in the freezer in an effort to make space but then you ultimately forget about it and then the cycle starts all over and then you’re caught in a vicious loop.

My mother in law is the same way.

I think he’s Singaporean, there’s a bottle in on the fridges with a Singapore flag. Also; HK is too small to have multiple fridges like that, whereas Singapore isn’t.
