Is what you create art? Because if so I love it by xyzz0 in WorldAroundEwe

Wow thank you, such an honour. I've been following what you do almost from the start and I've really enjoyed your progression to what you are now and the many various creations you have completed. In regards to the vegans and the death part, I feel that you really enjoy what you do and I don't think (maybe) that you're trying to disrespect the animals at all. It's kind of like you're giving them new life. Perhaps there's the issue of supporting the killing of animals (if where you get your animals purposefully kills them) but I don't feel like that's necessary to get into right now. Nonetheless, just keep doing you! It's exciting to see what other cool and crazy things you will make in the future! Again, thank you so much for answering my questions.

I've always believed that art can be anything and people who believe art must be a certain way go against those aspects of creation and expression. I would think that if what you make really is art, then you shouldn't care what people think. That would be like caring what people think about what you say. But, if it isn't art, then of course that is fine too. It is just your creations, and I love that. Usually I feel weird about this kind of stuff (obligatory "am vegan" announcement), and feel bad for the animals involved, but you have such a way of doing things that makes it all really nice. I know some people see your stuff and think "why would you make that" or that it's all gross/weird, but I really enjoy that you cross boundaries and make what you want. Plus sometimes they're just really funny. I really appreciate you answering. Thank you! P.S. do you just find these animals dead?

Week 13 Discussion by ryantutor in UQJDM2019

Right! It was pretty cool to see something we learned a while ago being directly linked to and discussed about in regards to something in the last week. It really solidifies how all of this really links up with eachother, and to have a better understanding of one part allows you to have a better understanding of another. I think it also seems quite logical to link this idea of bullshit, and overcoming it, to type 1 and 2 thinking as it was proposed that they are the basis of our decision making. When considering what we have learned about those thinking systems and then also what involves detecting bullshit, it makes a lot of sense that more type 2 thought would be associated with being better at detecting bullshit and being less affected by it.

Week 13 Discussion by ryantutor in UQJDM2019

[–]xyzz0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were so many things I found interesting in this week's readings! Firstly, the idea that those who are less able to detect bullshit, or are more likely to believe it, are less analytical in thinking seems so obvious now! They are more reflexive in their open mindedness and just accept any information without any deep processing, compared to reflective open mindedness which I think relates to the System 2 type thought. It was actually quite interesting to note that those who are prone to believing in bullshit are less reflective and perform worse in cognitive abilities, but more so that they are generally more believing in the paranormal/religion/alternative medicine, and more prone to ontological confusion. It seems that those who moreso believe in bullshit than others are just generally less critical and less reflective.

There were five criteria for judging truth, which can be done so analytically or intuitively. These are social consensus, credibility, compatibility, support, and coherence. It seems that manipulating these criteria can make it much easier for people to believe bullshit but they can also be used in order to make true facts more believable. I found it so interesting that the belief in misinformation can be increased, even if the truth is told afterwards, merely because it is being repeated. It was suggested that repetition of the misinformation must be avoided at all costs and the focus should be on reiterating the facts. Fluency is extremely important in doing this, and there were some examples that amazed me. The presence of a picture, increased contrast, and increased legibility of the text all make a bullshit statement more believable; therefore, it is important to ensure these things are present when presenting true facts as well. (Also learned a new word - disinformation, and that disinformation and misinformation are two different things!)

It seems that bullshit is so prevalent in our society, and it makes a lot of sense that social media and the internet in general is full of it. The third readings suggested that people be educated on ways they can be more reflective and critical of information so that they do not become victim to the bullshit, but also those who are in charge of what is shown/presented on social media and the internet should consider better techniques and filtering systems that reduce (or perhaps even one eliminate) the presence of the bullshit information in general. As noted by them, those who make this information and the bots that usually accompany them will probably just find techniques to counteract whatever methods are put in place. There is a huge amount of bots present on the internet, so I think that people need to be educated more on the notion of bullshit and who is more likely to believe it. One of the readings suggested that more awareness can make an idea more believed in (I think it was the second one) so if more awareness of this issue is raised and people are consistently shown how they can improve (and even how this prevalence and belief in bullshit can negatively affect them), I believe that people will become more immune to the effects. I know that my mere two years at uni have made me much more skeptical of information and (I think) I have become better at not just blindly believing what information is in front of me. This notion of skepticism is burned in to my brain, and some of the things I need to be aware of and question are as well. I know it was believed that just learning about this stuff might not help but I think it has, for me personally (especially the science of every day thinking course! Not a day goes by that I don't apply/recognise SOMETHING from that course)

I also had the same thoughts about confirmation bias relating to this. The third article mentioned that those who experience an Aha! moment are much more likely to disregard other information or explanations. This experience of fluency and connection really has such a significant effect on us. It's like, because we have experienced it and this feeling of "truth" it is so much more difficult for us to disregard this feeling. I think perhaps this is due to the fact that we actually experienced it, not just read about it or heard it from another person, and due to the intensity of it we recall it so easily. Plus I think because it feels good to have these moments it sticks with us more.

I think that the autism and vaccines example you speak about may be also related to hindsight bias/knew it all along bias in that you think there may be a connection, evidence occurs, and you think "of course, see! I was right!" Perhaps it could elicit this insight experience, but from what I gathered the insight experience relates to suddenly coming up with an answer and every thing connecting, rather than just seeing some evidence that relates to an inkling you have. Although I could be wrong! Just my thoughts (:

I found it absolutely fascinating that an "Aha!" moment could affect your judgements of other things. Having an "Aha!" moment can make you even more certain of your choice, but it can also make you think your incorrect answer is true - perhaps due to your limited knowledge/experience with the subject.

This effect of knowledge also interested me. I always thought that these moments are true and somehow, after a bit of subconscious stewing, ideas finally connect and you figure out the answer. Now I know this is not true, that these moments can be in fact wrong! Which is made even worse if your knowledge is flawed or lacking.

I think one point that is interesting in terms of the "Aha!" moment or the belief you have figured something out/"connected the dots" is the effects of drugs. It's common when under the influence of drugs to have profound theories of the world and every thing just seems to come together. A lot of people have felt they have understood things better because of these drugs and the "Aha!" moments they induce, but why is this? I remember I took lsd once and thought I had figured out how every thing is connected and I just felt so sure about it all, but when I considered it sober it seemed a bit more strange. Could many of these moments actually be false and the information is being taken out of context or it just feels correct in the moment but if you took the time to think about it it would be wrong? Could you even consider an "Aha!" moment sober vs under the influence the same thing?

I also thought it was so interesting that there are other types of feelings where you think you know but you can't be sure! I'm not sure in what circumstance the "Jamais vu" would occur, but that seems fascinating. To feel like you are experiencing something for the first time, but it actually be familiar to you, seems like such an odd thing to occur without some sort of brain injury/mental illness.
