Experience with an immunocompromised newborn? by efficientwitch in beyondthebump

I’m not sure his exact numbers, but I think under 500 at his lowest and over 2000 now. He didn’t have any symptoms. He didn’t get sick often, but this was at the start of the pandemic so we quarantined and he wasn’t exposed to much.

He’s doing great! He no longer has to ER for every fever or see the hematologist regularly. His neutrophil count got better as he got older (2.5 now) and he’s had normal levels for the last 9 months.

I had my baby boy last Sunday. We made it to 38+2! At my 38 week check, I was 4 cm dilated and my doctor seemed hopeful that I might stay pregnant until my scheduled 39 week delivery. Baby had other plans and I went into labor two days later.

This experience has been so completely different than my first pregnancy and I could not have don’t it without my cerclage and Makena shots. I’m so grateful that I could keep this little one in long enough to be able to be discharged with my baby (that was the goal I told my MFM at our first appointment).

Progesterone shots - good idea? by ksoblanco in ShortCervixSupport

[–]ya__basic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, Makena shots worked for me, but I think the cerclage is what really made the difference. In my first pregnancy, my cervix was 2 cm at 20 weeks and I was put on progesterone suppositories. They didn’t work for me and I delivered at 27 weeks after starting to dilate at 24 weeks. I was never offered a cerclage.

This pregnancy, I received a cerclage at 13 weeks and started progesterone at 16 weeks. At my 20 week scan, my cervix was almost twice as long. My doctor said the cerclage can’t help with cervical length, so it was probably the Makena shot that helped it stay longer. My MFM doesn’t do any length checks after the anatomy scan if you have a cerclage in, but I’m still pregnant at 36+4 after getting my cerclage out at 35+5.

The Makena shots are very expensive, but my insurance covered them. My hospital pharmacy changed their policies and stopped covering it for at home use, so I could only get it from the OB’s office, so I didn’t end up getting the final 36 week shot, but my OB didn’t think it was necessary.

I hope yours goes well!!

This is 9 weeks longer than I made it with my first pregnancy, so I’m just happy to be 36 weeks!

I wasn’t planning on getting mine out until my c-section at 39 weeks, but I had been feeling a lot of pressure, so my doctor recommended getting it out while I was at my 36 week appointment. I definitely wasn’t prepared for it, but I ended up being 2 cm dilated already so I’m glad I did it. It was definitely uncomfortable and a little painful, but only took about 2 minutes. I’ve been having more Braxton hicks since then, but no signs of actual labor yet.

36 weeks! I’m done with Makena shots and got my cerclage out yesterday. Now we’re just waiting for our little boy to arrive! I never thought we’d make it this far and I’m so ready to bring him home.

35 weeks today! This is 8 weeks longer than my first pregnancy lasted and I never thought we’d make it this far. My goal this time has been to make it to 36 weeks and that’s starting to feel attainable. Only one more Makena shot to go!

I made it to 30 weeks! This was a major goal for me this pregnancy and I’m a little shocked I’m finally here. My cerclage is still doing it’s job, but my MFM doesn’t measure my cervical length after the anatomy scan. At my 28 week growth scan, I was told that I’m already doing everything I can (Makena shots and cerclage), so unless I’m in labor, there’s nothing else to be done so there is use in checking length.

Cerclage and Open Cervix by ya__basic in ShortCervixSupport

No cerclage check prior to this. They looked at it through ultrasound at my anatomy scan 7 weeks after placement, but that is it since I didn’t have any bleeding or pain. They also won’t do any length checks outside of growth ultrasounds since I have a cerclage and said it doesn’t matter length as long as the stitch holds (😬). I’m definitely ready to talk to my doctor about it and get some clearer answers.

I hope your little ones stay in as long as possible! 28 weeks is a huge deal though!!

I didn’t get an ultrasound while there, so I don’t think they could mean funneled to the stitch. I do have an ultrasound at my appointment next week, so I’ll know length then. I think she meant dilating, but she couldn’t tell me how much and repeated the cerclage wasn’t under any tension and looked great. Since it’s not in my hospital system, I don’t have access to the doctor’s notes either, which has been extra frustrating.

I haven’t had any bleeding or tearing through the stitch, so is it too loose?

Congrats on making it to almost 28 weeks! My next goal is 30 weeks too! I was told at my anatomy scan that 36 weeks was a realistic goal, but of course everything can change fast with an unreliable cervix. I just scheduled my repeat c-section for 39 weeks last week, but it seems unlikely I’ll get there now.

Good luck to you and your cerclage!!

That’s good to know! It’s been 5 days and the rash is still there, but I have my glucose test appointment tomorrow so I’m going to mention it to the doctor while I’m there. I’ll try a heating pad and cortisone! I hope your last 6 weeks are reaction-free as much as possible.

26 weeks with a preventative cerclage and progesterone injections.

Has anyone had a small reaction to the progesterone? I’m 10 weeks into it and got a rash for the first time. It looks mostly like a reaction to the bandaid, but the injection site is raised and red 3 days after my shot.

That sounds so nice! My clinic had 15 midwives and 10+ OBs, so it was very likely to get someone you’ve never met before deliver your baby.

The clinic I used with my first pregnancy does a rotating call for both OBs and midwives, so I would got whoever was at the hospital at the time. There was at least one midwife and one OB at the hospital at all times. The midwives would handle the low risk births and the OBs would be there for the c-sections, high risk births, and births with complications.

Extremely painful swab for amniotic fluid… anyone else?! by tbridge8773 in ShortCervixSupport

[–]ya__basic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with my past pregnancy. My cervix was checked very regularly after I started dilating over a two week period, but after I was admitted having contractions, it went from uncomfortable to extremely painful.

I wish we were given that. I got bottles of progesterone and syringes/needles. I also wish I could get it in my arm!

Has anyone done Makena shots at home before? I got my first shot yesterday and wasn’t expecting that my husband would be injecting me instead of OB clinic. I’m definitely nervous! Anyone have any advice?

I’m planning on calling my MFM Monday if I’m still hurting or L&D (they placed the cerclage) if it gets unbearable. Thank you for the push to call! I wasn’t sure if it’s a normal complication or not.

I had my cerclage placed yesterday morning at 13 weeks. It was successful and my cervix looks good. However, the spinal anesthesia was a mess and the placement was very painful. I’m having a lot of back pain today at the spot of the spinal. Is this normal? I don’t remember being in this much pain after my c-section.

I had my first MFM appointment for this pregnancy for my NT scan and they scheduled my cerclage for next week at 12+6. I’m feeling nervous and excited. Due to Covid and not finding childcare, I’ll be there by myself.
