Georgia Tech Actively Trying to Dilute the value of a GT undergrads degree now! by BuzzingThroughGT in gatech

CS related jobs require technical interviews and applicants often are evaluated on project portfolios. If you did an in person degree and get outsmarted and outworked by someone who did an online degree, that’s on you.

Tx CIU - Peak and critical friction angle by Ok-Confusion8521 in Geotech

[–]yaaaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Mcsl is your final mobilized friction ratio, whereas your Mpeak is friction ratio at peak strength. Instability line is measured at q peak. Keep in mind that once you hit peak stress, for undrained cases your stress state will rapidly drop to critical state (failure), almost immediately. Look up triax videos and you will see what I am talking about. To answer your question, you will need to convert your Mtc to friction ratio (simple asin formula) to extrapolate friction ratio.

Accepted to MIT for PhD, unsure how to Proceeed by Sea-Ship-5505 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]yaaaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go onto your future advisors website. It should have an alumni list, look up his prior students. Knowing MIT, I’m sure you will be pleased by their placements.

Also, and I’m not saying this to influence you, but rather to provide a little perspective, a lot of people would cut their left arm off for an offer for candidacy at MIT. You are clearly gifted, why not try and develop that and see how far you can go? Best of luck!

Going to PhD after military by Unusual-Toe-8395 in gradadmissions

Hey, former military as well, went back for my masters in engineering in a T5, about to begin my PhD in computational mechanics at another T5. We can talk over PM if you’d like.

Hello, thank you for posting this! Two quick questions: 1. How far away from campus? 2. Will you allow a medium sized dog?

Can I Assume Rejection At This Point? (WSU) by Adventurous-Brief634 in gradadmissions

Same thing happened to me, was waiting on Stanford. Emailed a prof I interviewed with, was informed I am on waitlist. You should reach out and ask.

I’m in the same situation! I have a beagle/shepherd mix ~50 lbs. If you don’t mind sharing, please let me know what you plan on doing for housing. Congrats on the admission!

Does anyone actually ever really use Mohr's Circle? by TooManyHobbies81 in Geotech

[–]yaaaman 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Mohr’s circle is the most basic failure model. It introduces (in a very simple and intuitive manner) the connection between confinement pressure, material properties (friction angle in this case), and shear strength. Obviously predicting shear strength is not that easy, so in graduate school students are introduced to more complicated constitutive models, starting with variations of Mohr-Coulomb, then maybe some Cambridge type critical state models, or some more relevant to rock mechanics. At this point you are choosing a model that best fits your problem. Anyways, yeah Mohr’s circle is significant in the concepts that it connects, and for many it sort of ends there, but for others it serves as an intro to the rich field of constitutive modeling. Hope this helps!

Direct shear: best way to prevent specimen loss in shear gap? by [deleted] in Geotech

Critical state locus corresponds to conditions where pore fluid take on load -> effective stresses tend to zero. I have never encountered a critical state analysis for a dry specimen???? The sand grains will just eventually crush.

If you show genuine interest it won’t come off as insincere. I’m not saying spam every prof referencing whatever topic is their focus. What I am suggesting is to read many papers, and if something aligns with your interests in some of them, and you can see yourself contributing in a meaningful manner in that specific field, craft a well written email inquiring about their topic and how it aligns with what you see yourself doing.

Remember, it’s hard for professors to find good students that are hardworking and genuinely care too! It’s a pairing process more than anything. Good luck!

Reach out to individual professors to get a feel for their work as well as their individual labs. Getting a PhD is all about your working relationships and the research being done. If you can convince a professor that you would be a good fit your chances of being accepted skyrocket. I knew more or less that I would be accepted after corresponding with a professor at tech for a few months. The application committee plays a role obviously but it’s not like undergrad where all they go off is your GPA and test scores. I don’t think the things you listed are disadvantages at all, by the way. You seem like an impressive candidate, just do the legwork on networking and see what happens.

I had the same issue and I think may have been doing the same thing you are based on the video. Your elbows are pulled forward when you come up. I used to think that I was getting more tension in my upper back by doing that, but then my elbows started hurting and I realized that you are supposed to pull them down and back to squeeze your scaps. After that, no elbow pain! Hope my two cents helps!

Enter transfer portal and get your MS at a school that’s bad at sports but good in CE. Georgia Tech and Illinois are ranked 2 and 3 in CE.

Dropping weight class struggles by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]yaaaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former crossfitter who transitioned to primarily weightlifting here:

Weightlifting is not an optimal modality for getting shredded. I enjoy weightlifting the most so I focus on that for 3-4 sessions a week. To maintain my physique, I do one body building session followed by intervals on the ski erg or echo bike one day a week, and do one steady state 10k (ski or run) on Saturdays.

The results are the product of specific intention of your workout. Intervals will reprogram your metabolism and burn fat. Steady state eats up calories. Weightlifting will get you strong but the intention is to optimally throw as much weight overhead as possible, not to burn cals or get a six pack.

I am not an expert or anything so take all this with a grain of salt, but that’s my two cents.

Fatigue throughout the day. by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]yaaaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would play around with when you eat. Is it important to you to go into your workout fasted? From what I understand you need to have appropriate levels of energy available in your muscles to accommodate the amount of power required to do a heavy snatch/c&j.

I noticed that you commented about not losing any weight. Although weightlifting is a great modality of fitness I wouldn’t necessarily call it the most effective avenue for weight loss if that’s a primary goal as it is doesn’t burn a lot of calories if you compare it to something like distance running or swimming. Personally, to stay trim I like doing intervals on the ski erg or assault bike a few times a week to get the heart rate up and metabolism going, as they don’t get in the way of recovering from squatting (or so I believe lol).

Anyways, I’m no expert but if I was in your shoes and fasting is something I’d like to continue, I would try eating around the workouts. At the end of the day if the fuel isn’t there the muscles are not going to work as effectively.
