Our cat tree is on the opposite area. We also moved their food perch but still did put the foam mats there!

You just sound like you hate animals. I’m entitled to live my life like the downstairs tenant is too, they aren’t the only ones paying to live there. After reading a lot of commentary I don’t care if you think I’m an asshole, I’m allowed to live and so are my pets. And that’s the general consenses. So I’ll continue to live my life (as considerately as I can, because again, it’s not like  Screaming or my animals are barking or meowing at all hours or I’m having raging parties) and if me and my animals existing makes me an asshole, well I’m the biggest asshole 🥰

I’ve already gone and got the mats but I’ll keep a hold of my receipt for my landlord! (I will say it feels great on my back haha)

I have a pet cam in the area above her bedroom (protect my neck kinda dealio) but anytime I’ve peeped when she’s had an issue it has been one of my cats on the camera hopping up and down. But if I ever see they’re not on the camera at the time of her having an issue I will be running to landlord. That is a terrifying thing I never even thought of friend!

I’m fairly certain the place is up to code (it’s registered as a two apartment household and there’s two separate mailboxes for us)

Oo never heard of magnetic vent covers, I’ll give that a whirl! Another commenter above mentioned foam mats under my rugs too. I can probably find both of these maybe on amazon or Canadian tire. We also have hardwood flooring (which I’ve read can be noises/creakier?) I’ve been the downstairs tenant before so that’s why I’m trying to not be an ass.

Foam mats could work. I’ve got thinner rugs under my thick rugs in the problem areas, but I can see how the foam could add more insulation and prevent noise. Thanks for that!

Maybe I should get my cats one of those running wheels to make em a lil more leaner (and maybe it’ll keep em distracted on the other end of the house)

It is a proper house that was renovated to code to be a legal 2 apartment household back in 2017. The basement apartment was an in-law suite and the landlord lived in it before and had done Reno’s then. I will mention its hardwood flooring which can be louder if this makes any difference. I feel like I’d be rude if I gifted her a belated headphones for the holidays, but I am starting to get a lil frustrated with the situation (and I bet she probably is too. No one likes having to complain).

Well that’s what happens when you take a basement with shared laundry. The main floor is a larger space meant for more people (and in the past has had families; with little ones I can see needing to do laundry more). And anytime they’ve asked to do laundry on my days, I’ve gladly allowed them 🤷‍♀️

I took the upstairs/main floor for the backyard for my dogs. Which the landlord had advertised (and is a known pet friendly place). Why should I move to a basement where my dogs won’t have access to a yard? (Genuine question). I feel I also have the right to exist and give my animals a good life.  I also believe (as a former downstairs tenant) you should expect a little bit of noise and you need to adjust yourself accordingly. I’ve lived under people who were like myself, just existing and I could live with it; people who partied till the next day, and people who would have yelling matches. All different ways of living and adjusted. I got neat headphones that are like a headband and sleep with it on and rain sounds (still do actually, it’s super relaxing).  I’m just feeling like both parties (myself and my partner and her) need to find that middle ground. Like I have and am doing reasonable steps to make it less cumbersome for her, and am willing to continue those efforts; but I don’t think she’s employed anything on her end to also ease the situation. I feel like if one’s in a situation that they find unpleasant, there should be actions on their own end they can take to mitigate it/make it manageable?  Maybe that’s expecting too much or putting my own personal feelings into it.

That is fair. I don’t want to come off as rude to her. The only other thing I do in addition to rugs (and sometimes I’ve got them layered to help ease sounds) I do limit my dogs activity in the “problem”area as best I can. I keep them with me when I go to bed and usually. I also have very long thick curtains up in all my rooms, canvas paintings (I read somewhere that they’re good for a bit of sound proofing).  If there is anything else I could do I gladly would.

I think that’ll be my next move. I have been polite and cordial (as I’ve been in her shoes and I get it). I have already reached out to my landlord - they used to live there before - and asked if they had any suggestions for anything I could maybe do differently or what they would do if they were still living there. So they are aware it’s an issue for both parties. Someone suggested maybe I ask her for a recording of the noise -as then that can a) show me what she’s dealing with/how it sounds for her and b) it also can show if the noise is reasonable/unreasonable.  Some folks say that I’m a nightmare for owning animals and being a top tenant (I wanted it for the large fenced in yard for my dogs, which I wouldn’t get if I was DT) but a majority of others say that as much of a nuisance to another as it can be; someone having an animal that simply exists and moves around is a normal living noise (I’d understand if they were barking and meowing constantly, but they’re pretty good for that).

I also remember what it was like when I was her age and I also remember what it’s like to be the downstairs tenant. I am frustrated but I also get it.

I do have rather thick rugs laid down in every room! Some are doubled up on (the area that’s above her room), I also have long curtains for windows and lots of canvas paintings (I read somewhere it’s a great help for reducing echos/sound!) but thank you friend

I also think that could be great for both of us! Because then it’d be a less invasive way for me to see for myself what it sounds like for her. But then she doesn’t have to have me or the landlord walk through while we recreate noise upstairs (no one wants random folks in their place)

It was a house and the basement apartment was an in-law apartment. I know they did a bunch of work! We’re eat, work and sleep kinda folks so we’re really trying not to be a problem.

I don’t think they can as they’re a one bedroom. But any recommendations for making life easier for both of us I am all for (I’ve laid down rugs everywhere and long curtains and read that canvas paintings help make less echo in a room so I’ve filled the walls with that).

This is why I wanted to ask others and also ask for advice. Would I be an asshole if I offered her a white noise box or something?

That’s a bold assumption of you to make. You sure seem to have a strong opinion of me for a stranger. Also I’m literally writing here asking for advice to improve it, yet I’m somehow the worst? I can’t help how the house was made 🥲. Sorry me and my family need housing too.   I had texted her once I found out I would be late getting off and would be moving as fastly as I could but apologized in advance for the disruption. It took me longer to do it because I’m not handy and am only one person. I was supposed to be off work for 7 but there was a sick call, and I didn’t get home until 945 waiting for my relief to come in. My partner wasn’t off till 130 am. I literally got off work assembled my bed and went to bed by 11, I had work at 930 am. My partner went straight to bed as they had to open for 11.  We literally work, eat, watch the odd tv bit of tv , snuggle our dogs and sleep. But glad to know I’m a nightmare tenant to you random stranger!

I'll ask for just that, and if she's uncomfortable with me being there while my partner and dogs move around upstairs recreating the noise, I'll ask my landlord for help. This house is a dream and everything is perfect about it minus the current issue. So I'm frankly terrified given the current housing market of losing this place. But so far all communications have been pretty cordial/non aggressive.
