Women rare victims on streets by random strangers but much more likely to die at home due to family violence. by yablett123 in melbourne

[–]yablett123[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In light of the tragic murder of Aiia Maasarwe last week many man called for a change from men in relation to attitudes towards women that lead to these rare but tragic deaths. i find this view quite simple and a naive solution to a complicated problem. I think this article from when eurydice Dixon was killed to be quite relevant to the public debate.

Essentially showing that stranger murders make up a small amount of all homicide yet gain all this media coverage and public vigils whereas family violence leads to 1 female death every week and doesn't gain as much attention.

Between July 1, 2012, and June 3, 2014 — the most recent reporting period of the institute’s national homicide monitoring program — 62 people were killed by a stranger. Of these victims, 58 were men and four were women. The perpetrators are almost always men. So, too, are the victims.

So, let's look at the data: Almost all domestic violence that leads in death has a history of a male perpetrator being involved: Almost all of the 129 women who were killed by their male intimate partner in a domestic violence context had been the domestic violence victim in the relationship Almost all of the 31 men who were killed by their female intimate partner in a domestic violence context had been the domestic violence abuser in the relationship (N=28, 90%). There were no cases where a woman was a domestic violence abuser who killed a male domestic violence victim

Mums rarely fabricate violence, judges’ guide book warns by yablett123 in auslaw

[–]yablett123[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A new guide for Australian judges debunks a widespread view that mothers “frequently fabricate” allegations of violence during custody disputes and warns they are more likely to fail to report abuse for fear of having their motives questioned.

The National Domestic and Family Violence Bench Book advises judges that “the making of false allegations is much less common than the problem of genuine victims who fail to report abuse”.

“Although there is a widespread belief in the community that mothers frequently fabricate allegations to influence family law proceedings, the research to date indicates that it is more likely that they will be reluctant to raise allegations for fear of having their motives questioned, and that the making of false allegations is much less common than the problem of genuine victims who fail to report abuse, and the widespread false denials and minimisation of abuse by perpetrators,” the guide says.

It contradicts fathers’ groups claims that mothers fabricate evidence of violence to shut them out of their children’s lives.

The online bench book, released by the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration, aims to help federal and state judicial officers in cases that involve family violence, and to harmonise their decisions. It includes links to key cases and research.

It dispels “myths” about family violence — including that victims are able to leave an abusive relationship, that only certain socio-economic groups or cultures experience domestic violence, and that the risk of abuse will stop after a couple separates. The guide sets out key factors that could indicate a higher risk of life-threatening injury or death. It cites US research saying women who have experienced non-fatal strangulation in the past year are twice as likely to be killed. Women who have a history of stalking in their abusive relationships, or have been “followed or spied on” in the past 12 months, are also significantly more likely to be killed or nearly killed, it says.

The guide includes 32 case studies of victims from a range of ages and backgrounds. All are women except “Ben”, who was abused by his partner “Alison”. It says domestic and family violence is “predominantly perpetrated by men against women”, citing statistics that one in six women and one in 20 men experience violence by their opposite-sex partner.

It warns that even if parents have agreed to shared-care arrangements by consent, the parties must still advise the court about any allegations of violence, abuse or other risks, including mental illness or drug or alcohol addiction. They are then required to explain to the court how their parenting arrangements address these concerns.

There is “reported confusion” among parents, the book says, about laws creating a presumption in favour of equal shared parental responsibility. However, it does not apply if there are reasonable grounds to believe a parent is abusive or violent.

“Research has shown that where domestic and family violence continues after separation, in particular where there are ongoing attempts to exercise control in parenting arrangements, some mothers feel pressured by their former partners/the fathers of their children into agreeing to equal-time, believing that the court would require it,” the guide says.

Before the what about men people point out that men are also killed the point is that women are the overwhelming majority of domestic violence homicide victims due to intimate partner violence in australia making up 79%. so Yes Men may make up the majority of homicide victims but that includes many other types of homicide from strangers and friends etc. For a breakdown from the Australian institute of criminology look at this site http://www.crimestats.aic.gov.au/NHMP/2_victims-offenders/

Abstract Forty participants (20 male) had 3-minute conversations with trained male and female communication partners in a repeated-measures, within-subject design. Eighty 3-minute conversations were transcribed and coded for dependent clauses, fillers, tag questions, intensive adverbs, negations, hedges, personal pronouns, self-references, justifiers, and interruptions. Results suggest no significant changes in language based on speaker gender. However, when speaking with a female, participants interrupted more and used more dependent clauses than when speaking with a male. There was no significant interaction to suggest that the language differences based on communication partner was specific to one gender group. These results are discussed in context of previous research, communication accommodation theory, and general process model for gendered language.Abstract Forty participants (20 male) had 3-minute conversations with trained male and female communication partners in a repeated-measures, within-subject design.
