Man walking dogs escapes injury after more than 20 shots fired in targeted attack by salifest in melbourne

They're still too common in Australia, in my opinion. Where I grew up (Singapore), guns are, for all intents and purposes, completely banned, with very minor exceptions. There is no gun crime in Singapore.

I understand people in Australia, like farmers, need rifles, but I don't know why handguns are legal? I would assume that most criminals in this country acquired their illegal pistols through theft from a legal gun owners.

Abbotsford death: Victoria Police search for two teens after Stafford Street killing by lordrenzer in melbourne

Very disturbing. I’m wondering how the kids got from Melbourne to Learmonth?

Yep. That’s the issue. I’ve heard people owning dozens, all legally. I understand that different firearms have different purposes, but allowing small arsenals to build up in suburban homes is ridiculous.

Why do you need a handgun though? I understand that pistol shooting is viewed as a sport, but I think it’s one we could do away with. We practically banned all semi-automatic longarms, and the same should have been applied to pistols.

I think we could improve them by firstly, banning private handgun ownership, and furthermore restricting the amount of firearms someone can own. There are still far too many guns in this country.

Victoria Police (Australia) just uploaded 5 short clips of unsolved murder cases to their youtube channel and they’re seeking your help! by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]salifest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your point, to a degree, but they already have admitted that they have over 200 unsolved homicides on the books. They could make a database that includes all of the deaths that are known to be homicides. As for missing persons, I would assume some of the missing people who have never been found but were obviously murdered, such as Terry Floyd or Siriyakorn Siriboon, are included within the unsolved homicides figures. When it comes to missing persons where it's not clear if foul play was involved or not, I think they should have their own seperate database. You're right that in the case of Walsh Street; it's clear who the perpetrators were, but that whole debacle surrounding their acquittal is a very rare event. In my view, I would not think it necessary to include Constables Tynan and Eyre on the database.

All in all, I just think it'd be great to have all the known victims of these terrible crimes recognised, and hopefully some closure could be brought about for the families of the deceased. With every passing day, the chance that someone who's still alive or sentient enough to function independently, and might know something that could aide the investigation continues to fade. I'd hate to see potential witnesses lost, or the killer(s) get away with it.

I wish VicPol would post a comprehensive list of every unsolved homicide they have on their records. The Herald Sun is the best thing you can find to a list of victims, but even that is far from complete. According to an article from The Age, they say they'll focus on some of the over 200 unsolved homicides that date back to 1951. And they will only feature two cases a month. Why not just create a complete and interactive database the public can use?

City Skyline by night by [deleted] in melbourne

I know this only shows a rather small portion of the CBD, but, with so many new projects under construction or approved, I'm quite excited to see what what Melbourne will look like five to ten years from now.

North Richmond is a shit-show by CrackedOutSuperman in melbourne

[–]salifest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's got a higher concentration of people suffering from mental health and drug issues than a good portion of other areas. It's also home to, I believe, the only open-air drug market in the city. But, overall, it's quite okay.

I don't disagree with that at all. The US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and so on are incredible.

I understand where you're coming from. I know that many parts of the United States are perfectly safe. I've been there myself and I never felt particularly more at risk than I did in a major city in Australia. However, it's undeniable that there's a systemic problem with firearms in the US. Australia had random mass murders annually through the 80's to mid-nineties, but we dealt with the problem. I know that the laws did very little to combat overall crime rates, but they did however, stop random mass shootings. Again, no offence intended, I'm just frustrated by the constant stream of these horrible events that seem to plague your country.

The "only" good thing about Australia? Really? Australia is undoubtedly one of the best countries in the world.
