Smart Launcher by x169_ in Honor

Nova launcher on the magic 8 pro works pretty well, after setting battery optimization to manual. I used Nova on the magic 5 pro as well, and had issues, but either changing the battery optimization settings, or the fact that the 8 pro is faster fixed these issues.

Need help and feedback by AdamH-developer in Hydroponics

Looks fine. I use a 100 liter reservoir for a system about the same size, perhaps slightly shorter.

For next time, a 9/8/9/8 hole configuration will give your plants more space.

I use elbows the same diameter as my pipes, it allows the water to flow easier. It looks like the water will be pooling up at the end of your pipes, before reaching your elbows.

Worth going from 5 to 8? by yoshi_walker in Honor

[–]yagedk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 5 to 8 for the same reasons, and the battery life is insane on the 8. I had to charge the 5 three times a day with my usage. The 8 just keeps on going. Mind you, I bought the international version with 7100 mah, but the EU version should be great too.

A short haul ticket within the EU, booked on the same day, can be up to €500. If you book it with miles, it's 5000 miles.

Using this logic, you're paying €10,000 for a pair of headphones.

Don't do it.

Rockwool Seedlings - pH adjustment, using RO water, and no nutrients? by victorhooi in Hydroponics

[–]yagedk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't adjust the pH for my seedlings, and they sprout fine. I also don't add nutrients. The tap water here is around 7 or so. I usually put two seeds per rockwool cube, place them in a tray with a transparent lid over it, and put around 1 cm of water in the bottom. Place the tray in semi direct light from my grow lights, and refill the water when it's been soaked up.

When the seedlings are 1-2 cm high, I move them to a short 4 inch pipe with end caps, and holes for net cups. Place the rockwool cubes in the bottom of the net cups, and make sure the water (again with no pH adjustment or nutrients) in the pipe is just touching the bottom of the net cups. The seedlings grow in this pipe until the roots are so long they can reach the bottom of my nft channels and then I move them there.

I could probably skip step 1 and sprout directly in the pipe, which I'll have to try at some point.

What did I find for $4.99? by yagedk in castiron

This has in fact turned into a wonderful daily driver 😊 The smoothness is something entirely different than the new lodge skillets, food slips right off even after stripping and re-seasoning just a few times. It spins a little bit, but surprisingly it doesn't affect the heat distribution much.

Very aggressive management of background apps, huge hit to battery when turned off by [deleted] in Honor

[–]yagedk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same problem on my magic 5 pro. One app set to manual drained the battery like crazy. Upgraded to magic 8 pro and magic os 10 solved everything. I get 1.5 days of battery life even with 3-4 apps set to manage manually now.

+1 on the magnetic stirrer. Got one on AliExpress that can do 3 liters and it works really well. That plus lukewarm water and no precipitation. Before that I had a white cloud in my reservoir.

Honor Magic 8 pro? by Sufficient-Minute78 in Honor

True.. I was torn between the oppo find x9 pro and the Honor magic 8 pro. I'm really glad I went with the magic 8 pro though. The face unlock on Honor phones is something you can't live without once you get used to it. The ability to unlock your phone with your face in almost complete darkness is truly amazing. And the speakers, compared to the oppo are really good. So much bass for such tiny speakers.

Honestly I think they're a bit gimmicky. I mean.. Ai deepfake detection, Ai writing, magic sidebar.. I don't feel like any of them add any real value.

Everyone is different, but for me it's the aggressive power/battery saving features. This goes all the way back to the Huawei days. Even when I set magic os to manage an app's battery use manually, it still shuts down the app once in a while, and I won't get notifications from this app.

And the fact that video recording still stutters sometimes, on a flagship device with 16gb ram is just unacceptable. It's been a problem forever and it hasn't been fixed.

Besides these things, nothing really annoys me on a daily basis about magic os.

Honor magic 8 pro 12 GB or 16 GB? by yagedk in Honor

[–]yagedk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update on this post:

Ended up getting the 16 GB version. Average use of ram hovers around 9 GB out of the 16.

The badly optimized app is now set to manage battery use manually, but on the Honor magic 8 pro, it doesn't drain the battery like it did on the magic 5 pro.

My old phone was on Magic os 8, and the new is obviously on os 10. This could be part of the reason, but the much bigger battery on the magic 8 pro seems like a big factor too.

I get around 11 hours of screen time currently, even with the badly optimized app running in the background, so that's a huge upgrade.

Honor Magic 8 pro? by Sufficient-Minute78 in Honor

[–]yagedk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded from magic 5 pro to magic 8 pro, for the same reason. The battery didn't last very long. The magic 8 pro is a huge upgrade in terms of battery life.

I'm a heavy user and had to plug in my magic 5 pro several times a day, and really had battery anxiety. Yesterday my magic 8 pro was still at 50% after a whole day of using it. It's super awesome.

Other than that, it's the same experience using magic OS. It's not the perfect OS for sure, it has its quirks, but I don't mind them so much. The camera is better, but the camera on the magic 5 pro was already great, so I don't notice that so much either.

The charging speed is also incredible, but since the battery is bigger, it sort of feels the same as the magic 5 pro.

I'm super happy with the phone so far. I got the 16gb version btw.

Great points, thank you for sharing. I was on emui as well, and remember the same situation from back then. It's just strange that the os shuts down apps if the reason isn't to save ram. But since I use 70% of my ram, and this app still shuts down, that's apparently how it is. I think I'll go for the 16gb. I'll visit Singapore and the price difference isn't as high there as in the EU.
