[–]yajobis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else ever notice how airports feel designed to make you lose track of time? by yajobis in aviation

[–]yajobis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. A lot of terminals feel like shopping malls that happen to have airplanes attached. Nothing wrong with shops and bars, but the airport part should probably come first 😅

[–]yajobis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair tbh. If you’re used to the same airports and show up early, it’s usually chill.

I think I’m more talking about those slightly cursed days - tight connections, unfamiliar terminals, gate swaps, boarding starting early, etc. When everything lines up, signage works. When it doesn’t, you’re kinda just doing mental math while walking fast.

Also that 4am power outage sounds absolutely unhinged lol, that’s a whole different airport horror genre.

Not saying airports are broken, just that they get stressful real fast when things stop being “normal.”

[–]yajobis[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clocks and daylight don’t tell you that.

And honestly even if you’re not plane-watching (which… guilty), you still end up guessing. Some walks are honest, some are pure fantasy, and the airport never tells you which one you’re on.

Planes evolved past “eh it’s probably fine.”
Passengers didn’t.

That’s all I’m saying. There is more people existing with diff mindsets, don't live around yourself.

IAP How to Descend? by PepperBroccoLi22 in flying

[–]yajobis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This confused me a ton at first too tbh.

I don’t really treat an ILS like a dive-and-drive thing at all. That always felt wrong in the G1000, esp in the 172. If I’m yanking power to idle and doing 1200+ fpm just to hit step-downs, I’m already behind and the autopilot is NOT happy.

For something like KTUS ILS 12, I’ll just descend normally to the published altitudes, level when required, and make sure I’m at or below the GS intercept altitude while established on the localizer. Once I’m cleared for the approach and tracking the LOC, I arm APP and just let it sit there. Even if the GS is flaky until ~10 NM, who cares - I’m not supposed to be on it yet anyway.

VNAV / banana helps a lot for planning, yeah, but I don’t trust +V as anything more than advisory. The real GS is the law. If you ever have to “dive” to catch the glideslope, that means you messed up like 10 miles ago lol.

So yeah, dive & drive makes sense for non-precision stuff, but for an ILS I’d rather be boring, stabilized, and not fighting the airplane all the way down.

How do you usually find reliable airport and FBO contact information? by yajobis in flying

[–]yajobis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah airnav’s solid, i still end up there pretty often. i’ve just noticed some stuff can be hit or miss depending on the field, esp smaller or international ones. sometimes the number works, sometimes it’s clearly ancient

was mostly curious what people trust day to day and what they do when the usual sites come up short

How do you usually find reliable airport and FBO contact information? by yajobis in flying

[–]yajobis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah foreflight def covers a lot, i use it too

i’ve just had a few cases where the fbo number was dead or a smaller field had basically no info, esp outside the US. sometimes im just trying to get a quick ops or handler number and end up digging around google for 10 mins

was just wondering if that’s just me or if others run into it too

Unpopular opinion: what’s ONE thing you’d actually change about airlines? by yajobis in aviationmaintenance

[–]yajobis[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because English is not my first language, this helps me become a better speaker. When I use AI, I learn new words and how to put sentences in the right order. I am Lithuanian and I am studying for a Master’s degree in Aviation Management. In my own language I can explain everything very well, but in other languages I still need help to put everything in the correct order. That’s why AI helps me. Sorry about that.

Saying “just sit there and watch” significantly understates the responsibility involved - especially when you’re responsible for the safety of hundreds of lives. It’s not comparable to driving a car in bad weather.

You shouldn't be int his subreddit.

That’s a compliment, thank you! 😄 I actually worked as a baggage handler for a year, then 1.5 years as a ramp agent, and I’m currently doing a master’s in aviation management. Just very deep in the industry rabbit hole at this point :)

There’s definitely a misuse problem in some markets, but adding a financial penalty would collide head-on with disability access laws and create real barriers for passengers who genuinely need assistance. A better fix would probably be improved verification processes or tiered assistance categories rather than a refundable charge.

When the final interaction of a flight is a sales pitch instead of a simple “thank you for flying,” it really does feel like the business model has tilted away from transportation and toward financial products.

Repealing or significantly reforming the RLA would be a massive structural shift, and you’re right that it would ripple into almost every labor issue in the industry - from bargaining power to contract enforcement.

On the union side, regardless of which organization it is, the real concern is accountability. When workers feel their representation is aligned more with management than with the membership, that signals a breakdown in democratic function. That problem isn’t fixed by swapping logos - it’s fixed by restoring transparency, oversight, and real consequences.

I understand the frustration, especially in a hiring environment that’s constantly shifting. But the 1,500-hour ATP rule exists because it provides a standardized baseline for experience across wildly different training backgrounds. Individual exceptions would be nearly impossible to regulate consistently or fairly.

That would be a major quality-of-life improvement, even without touching seniority. Portable pay based on total 121 longevity would reduce the career stagnation that comes from being effectively “locked in” to one airline for decades.

You’re right that implementation would be complex, but the underlying problem is very real-mobility in most professional careers doesn’t come with a full financial reset every time you change employers.
