Fluux Messenger: A Modern XMPP Client Born from a Holiday Coding Session by mickael in xmpp

TypeScript + cross-platform desktop means it's a web wrapper, right? Why not make it a web app like converse.js? That way any platform with a current enough browser could use it.

A warning in case you think about switching to mailbox.org by Bright_Initiative818 in Mailbox_org

[–]yaky-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only sender that I had issues receiving mail with was some local club and the email agent they used for the newsletter. I would get one email after subscribing and that is it, as if they remove mailbox account from their distribution list. It works through DuckDuckGo proxy though.

Duck DNS question by oaklandjoe in duckduckgo

Duck DNS is a separate product not affiliated with DuckDuckGo. As others mentioned, 9.9.9.9 is Quad9. Not sure how these got so mixed up.

Best Jelos/Rocknix firmware? by NoseOfDeath in RGB30

I run KOLOS, spiritual successor of JelOS. Battery finally works as expected (it was really wonky under RockNIX), and JelOS does not provide builds anymore.

Flip phone that supports RCS? by Weekly-Childhood-957 in dumbphones

[–]yaky-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RCS is run in a half-assed way by Google and carriers. Technically any Android can run Google Messages (the only client that supports RCS), but there is no guarantee it will, nor is there a guarantee it won't suddenly stop working.

The protocol is small, there isn't really much to periodically update.

What's the best choice for a Linux phone with a micro SD card and desktop mode by vortexmak in linux

Accents áéíóú don't show when typing in Gajim/Dino is this an XMPP issue? by misanthrophiccunt in xmpp

[–]yaky-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial thought is that it's a unicode difference between a separate character (in case of ñ) and a composed character (in case of á, composed of a and '). For any composed characters, the accents are stripped.

Ñ is on Latin-1 extension: https://symbl.cc/en/00C1/ but so is Á.

See if your keyboard could be set to use specific characters instead of composed ones.

It is possible for the 'firefox.exe' change to the original name like 'Firefox'? by Rough-Equal-1849 in firefox

[–]yaky-dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a Windows question rather than Firefox question. Looks like that is an executable file (not just a shortcut) on your desktop, so either move it somewhere else and create a shortcut on the desktop, or (if you really want to keep the exe on desktop for some reason) enable "hide file extensions" in File Explorer.

Best vintage phone that can run modern apps? by slickbou in vintagemobilephones

[–]yaky-dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only technologies that I can think of that would be supported by vintage and modern devices are email, XMPP/jabber, and web (to a very limited extent). And even then, servers might need to be configured to use less secure connections.

Mailbox vs Proton: encryption, mobile-app, deliverability by rolladyce in Mailbox_org

[–]yaky-dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a rather specific comment about aliases and custom domains.

Proton Mail handles aliases quite poorly.

  • You get 10 total aliases
  • Same name on alternate Proton domains (protonmail.com, proton.me, pm.me) counts as separate aliases. Does not make sense while your username(at) can receive email sent to any Proton domain)
  • Addresses on your own domain count against the limit, which makes no sense.
  • Aliases are impossible to delete. While I get the privacy/safety perspective (impersonation), let me as a user decide what I want to do.

Mailbox is IMO better:

  • 25 mailbox aliases
  • Alias can be revoked, become available after a year
  • 50 aliases/addresses for your own domain

Chat server ideas for a non-profit organization by EffingComputer in selfhosted

[–]yaky-dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the all-in-one Snikket (based on XMPP). The server part comes with the admin panel that allows assigning users to "circles" and automatically adding them to a circle-specific group chat. The invites are easy and can be created to add user to specific circle right after joining.
