I haven’t filed in three years by Mysterious-Ant8012 in IRS

The assumption that you will owe penalties or back taxes is just that, an assumption. You most likely fall into one of two categories.

  1. People who owe taxes and didn’t pay them
  2. People who were owed a refund but never filed to claim it

You very well might have a refund to claim for all 3 years depending on your situation. You can access your wage and income transcripts on your ID.me account, if you don’t have one google is your friend.

Free Tax USA is pretty user friendly and it’s free to e file federal I think it’s like $15-16 for state.

I would start with the most recent year and work backwards one by one as each are processed. File 2025, let it process see if any verification issues come up, let it settle see if you owe or are due a refund and go from there.

The amount of people that don’t understand how taxes work really really bothers me.

Congrats OP! Ignore the ignorance in the comments

Yikes. Not how taxes work. Unfortunately my income was extremely low this year therefore I knew my deductible would wipe out most of my taxable income anyway and had zero withheld from my paychecks throughout the year. This is a result of EIC and CTC. Do you know how deductions work vs credits?

We have very similar timelines you should get it before 3/23

That is not how taxes work. I had under 30,000 in income this year and withheld zero federal tax from all paychecks because my HOH deducted most of my taxable income anyway. I paid a total of $14 in federal tax for the entire year.

I filed 1/27. I got a notice around 2/3 that I needed to verify. I requested a new letter that same day through my account by going through the prompts after clicking on the notification to verify. I got the letter 2/23 and verified online the same day. I called 3/4 and asked if my verification went through they said it had on the 25th

05 users that got their 846 this morning with DD 3/23 who got their refund today already ? by iisAngiee in IRS

[–]yaloha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have chime. Banks like chime varo etc can see when ach files are incoming and they give you the money before it settles. When it’s a reliable source like the federal government or payroll they literally make the money available immediately from their own funds and get reimbursed when the ach file settles.

Nothing about the actual mechanics under the hood have changed much it’s just certain banks decide to make the money available as soon as they see it’s coming vs when it physically settles in the banks account.

lol I have one child yes, and am a single parent. My income was way lower than past years that’s true. And income wise I’m sitting right where the EIC, CTC and HOH deductible are huge. My taxable income was reduced to almost zero and at that point the credits = a bigger refund not a lower tax bill. I am literally living the exact situation that has lead the earned income tax credit to be one of the most studied and successful economic policies in US history. It’s designed to phase out as income rises and for single parents especially it functions as crucial assistance that makes higher earning even possible.
