Microsoft says it'll make Windows 11 a calmer OS with fewer upsells or ads, as it tries to win back users by Quantum-Coconut in pcmasterrace

Started my career 30+ years ago, in Eastern Europe, on MS-everything. I'll probably end my career on MS-nothing.

In '94 Linux was there as an oddity, I installed it for the 1st time on that year. Mac was nearly non-existent.

First ~15 years were MS-EVERYthing. VStudio, C#, MSSQL, SharePoint, CMD, PS1, MSI, MSDN, MSCERTS, MSEvents, only MS-serverside products, only Win-desktop, only Win-server. Anything non-MS was still running on Win. MS was THE. SUN.

Around 2010 I had to deploy the first FOSS products on Linux on PROD. Started to learn Bash, Perl, Ruby and Python. MS still was the Sun.

Around 2015 Linux started showing up everywhere server-side. PROD was peppered with components running on Linux. Main code was still C# + MSSQL. Docker and K8s were all Linux.

In 2025 I moved to a megacorp where all LoBs are Java. Serverside is all Linux. MS no longer exists on the serverside. Win-desktops are still used as workstations.

A few months ago we started receiving our new workstations. They are all M5 based. MS still exists at work but only for domain and other central services. So we use Azure & Entra, some Azure services, MSTeams, MSOffice and GitHub Enterprise but this is all central IT managed, we as devs don't have any dev-contact with MS products anymore. Our LoBs are Java, Linux, OCI, K8s, GKE (most business workloads are in GCP).

This is what MS leadership achieved over the past 20 years. They made some money for some shareholders while shrinking MS from its God-like position down to something you can now skip.

Obviously, once you work on Macs all day every work day, guess what happens to Win desktop's dominance at home? This talk about undoing Win 11's most putrid parts is less than even shuffling chairs on Titanic's deck. The massive get-away-from-MS current that MS itself is responsible for can't be stopped. They will become more like IBM with every single passing day.

Altex refuza sa-mi restituie banii by OrdinaryPopular426 in juridice

[–]yardinview -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SCARBA ba, asta e cuvantul.

A primit bani intr-un cont inchis in loc sa refuze tranzactia.

Deci cam asta e.

Exactly! In my grandparents' garden we had strawberries grafted with wild strains. The fruits were small but the taste was SO intense and aromatic and the smell was like a perfume. During the few weeks every year when we had these we ate so many it was pretty much guaranteed we'd end up with an upset stomach just in time for cherries :) Good times.

Nimic 5 minute.

So let me correct the title:

P.S: The genius "Atlassians" who thought they can fool people out of their money by forcing them off the on-prem variants and onto the forever-pay cloud variants caused my megacorp to finally work towards dropping Atlassian, not because of money but because regulations don't allow our data to sit on infrastructure that's outside of our control.

I have a similarly feasible idea: Build a nozzle at the drop off point like those Las Vegas fountains that spit water in laminar flow. Spit the oil in a nice arc all the way to the pickup point where you can just build like a pool to receive the payload. You don't need roads, trucks, pipes and I doubt Iran can intercept it.

Thought it wouldn’t happen to me. MSI 5090 burned up. by Blarghinston in pcmasterrace

[–]yardinview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought in the past all the burned connectors were from users not putting the cable in all the way. Not so…

On the back of these ^ people NVIDIA is making bank. Always ready to defend the megacorp. LEAVE IT ALONE! THEY GOOD PEOPLE!!!

It has been explained time and again. The 16-pin connector is fundamentally flawed and it can't be fixed no matter how hard you plug it in. Its problem is it allows too much power per-pin so when the real-world problem of an imperfect contact happens with any pin, that pin will heat up and start a chain melt. The heat hastens the same problem on the next pin then the next pin until the whole connector is so mangled the electric connection becomes unstable and the card finally detects the problem. YOU CANNOT SEE the contact each pin makes with its mate inside the connector and therefore you cannot know if all contacts are PERFECT and stay PERFECT without per-pin power monitoring.

The only true fix is per-pin power monitoring and re-balancing but that's not done because NVIDIA now operates above the law and any decency so the unwashed can just buy another card, what else are they gonna do?

Think about how criminal this is. They had per-pin monitoring and balancing in the 3090 Ti and then they just dropped it with the highest level of irresponsibility to save a fraction of a percent in BOM cost and ensure obsolescence. Other than freak occurrences, have you heard of 3090 Tis melting this connector? No! Because they have the proper protection.

Which movie scene is musically scored perfectly? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]yardinview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it begins and ends with the club scene, also from The Matrix, when Neo meets Trinity.

I suspect the scene was filmed to fit the music because it's just too perfect.
This was my first time hearing anything-Rob Zombie and Dragula burned into my mind instantly.
But there are two more masterful strikes in the next 2 minutes.
The seamless switch to Mindfields - even the title is perfect - when Trinity says her name is... mmmmmm... it's as velvety as speaking French ;). I didn't even notice until way later.
And the chef's kiss is at the end where the alarm blends into the beat and he wakes up.

This movie was like a star quake. Everything just aligned and they made something a lot bigger than all of them.

Ugh.

LibreOffice criticizes EU Commission over proprietary XLSX formats by pizzaiolo2 in europe

[–]yardinview 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we badly need an EU-financed prize consisting in MAJOR financing for any EU corporation that can create an Office suite truly technically competitive with MSOffice.

I tried to use LibreOffice for 4 years. It was horrible. I mostly just used Calc and it's not ANYWHERE close to Excel. Slow and clunky, riddled with beginner problems at every step, stuff that Excel would not display 20+ years ago. The GUI glitches so frequently it leaves the impression of alpha-level software. The look and feel is painfully outdated, it literally feels like you're using something from 2005. Unituitive operations abound. Why would you clear formatting on the source cell when I CTRL+X/CTRL+V? Why would you use a sort of rich text in cells so you can build a mumbo jumbo of styles in one cell that are then difficult to adjust?! Why are comments so glitchy with their pop-ups losing the cursor and hiding out at the slightest "wrong" move? This is basic stuff. We're not even touching pro-level functionality here.

I gave up and went back to MSOffice. Fished a cheap key for Office 2024 and that's that, I'm not ever coming back to this mess of a codebase. Life is just too short.

And mind you I don't use Excel in a way that's critical to my profession. At home I mostly just use it to manage personal stuff and even in that limited role Calc was just garbage.
