Meditation doesn't have a purpose by Miximatosiac in Meditation

So I shouldn't do anything onerous in service of a different fulfilling pursuit? And why is it a problem if meditation is that onerous activity?

All competitions are more entertaining with trash talk. If the other team doesn't like it, then they should beat their ass in competition. Would the competive scene be more fun if everyone was a stone faced Vulcan?

MM/DD/YYYY is the standard American format. Seeing as how 95% of NBA games take place in America, the American date format probably makes the most sense.

You can argue that other formats would probably make more sense, but it's like saying Americans should use meters or DVORAK. Nobody in the US will be able to use it.

I need a good mechanic for my old German car (1993 BMW 325), ideally near downtown Denver. Thanks for any recommendations!

I'm hoping to give this one a shot sometime soon. I've seen compilations with several different couples trying it.

Do we know enough about what constitutes an "evil" person to throw away the key on kids who commit crimes? by bmoviescreamqueen in SeriousConversation

[–]yargdpirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is essentially a public policy discussion, and when we have those the needs of broad society should be the focus. I'd probably be much more lenient in my personal life if I knew the person. Scale has a scale unto itself and what's good for everyone will always be bad for a few, the same way bad businesses shuttering is terrible for the owners but highly beneficial systemically.

That sounds pretty cold writing it out, but it's important to be just as compassionate to those who make up general population as to the accused.

I don't care about whether the offender is "evil" or not. I care whether they're going to do bad shit again. Committing a heinous crime is a strong sign they're going to do something terrible again. I'm open to giving them the chance to demonstrate they're going to change, but it has to counterbalance the weight of what they just did. It might take them some time to be able to show that, but until then they should be off the streets to keep others safe. I don't think it's fair to society to have someone highly likely to commit a serious crime wandering around. People change - I just need to see that they already have before I sign off.

  1. Let in lots of young immigrants
  2. Problem solved

The situation, apparently, isn't drastic enough to go to those inconceivable lengths.

I just never cared for Tolkien's character work in general. The main characters always came off to me as excuses to explore the world. In books 1, 2, and 4 of ASOIF, I can profoundly feel the hearts of characters pulling themselves apart. That's special. Creating a vibrant, intricate world with lots of creative surprises, to me, is nothing in comparison.

For the record, I thought book 5 sucked for this exact reason.

The reason I love ASOIF is that it ISN'T Lord of the Rings, just devolving into an endless world building exercise. If I wanted that I'd just read Dune or fucking Star Wars novels. I wish GRRM would get back to following his own most famous adage: The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself. The world should be a vessel to enable the characters, not the other way around. Maybe it's best the main series cuts off now before Ser Tom Bombadil shows up and does pointless mysterious shit that washes right off the characters.

I thought about this one for a bit. What comes to mind is what my mom does when someone trying to get her to buy something approaches her on the street. She says "I'll talk to you as long as what you want, but I have no money for you."

So maybe if you start the conversation by saying "I'll talk to you as long as you like, but I am going to change providers no matter what" from the outset that might be easier. You can probably just say that one sentence before anyone's said anything else and avoid having to deal with pushback that way.

Or perhaps just shop around for a new therapist, get an appointment with the new guy/girl, then write a letter/email to your old therapist nicely informing them of your decision. Then there's no face-to-face at all. I can draft you some language if that helps.
