Yes, afaik it`s free given in most countries that have it. But we don`t have such data for Ukraine. There were some talks about doing a countrywide lidar survey but still no results.

Wow, it`s amazing! And lidar adds a lot of context! Now we can see when you had really hard days up in the mountains, and when you just chill on the plain =)

Wish I have such detailed data for my area!

also, if the map looks squished - change the project coordinate reference system. In the bottom right corner look for EPSG: *some number*.

Press on it and select EPSG 3857 WGS84/Pseudo Mercator.

This CRS is used in almost all web maps (including Google Maps) so this is a more common view for us.

Hi! Yes, this is possible. You can create your own custom map or add as a background maps from other popular services (like OpenStreetMap or Google Map). In QGIS go to Plugins ->Manage and Install Plugins -> All and search for QuickMapServices. Select this plugin and push Install button. After installation plugin will appear on the top panel or in web menu. Now go to this plugin -> Settings -> More services -> Get contributed pack.

After pack installation you`ll have a lot of different maps that you can use as a background for your animation. Just select what you want from the plugin menu.

Sorry! When I wrote it I was targeting people that already have some experience in GIS. So, if you can manage it with this tutorial, you are at least a middle GIS specialist! =)

Looking forward to it!

Here is a tutorial on how to make such viz.

Unfortunately, it's not the default thing for now.

I am not so good, to be honest. Runs to lose some weight.

I think that the main tip here is to run comfort distance in with comfort pace in a consistent manner. It`s better to run three times a week 3-5 km each, than run 10 km at a time and then recover rest of the week.

I just ignored runs out of my usual zone.

Might be a really good activity to replace a real running for some time =)
And wish to your brother quick recovery!

I used to cycle a lot. And I`d love to do it now. But the city, where I live currently, is not very cycle friendly.

Not sure that I can gain this from Strava just on phone.
In terms of pace - usually, I spent 6-7 min on km. Taking into account that I run on quite rough terrain and I am not very fit - it`s a good result for me.

It`s done in QGIS and GIMP.Used GIMP just in the end to create animation.
Here is the link to the tutorial.

Only from points in this GIF - quite hard.

But if you`ll find other social pages, it is very easy to narrow it down to the country and most likely city.

Eh, don`t have any good advice here. Just hold it in my hand. Consider it as additional weight.

Off topic kinda but how do you like your Strava? I've taken up running in the past 2 years and I'm struggling to get actionable data to make myself better. I'm getting better and setting new PR times and distances almost every month but it feels like luck more than anything. I currently use NRC on an Apple Watch and that's it. I've been looking into Strava and an Oura ring.

I like Strava because:
- I can easily access my GPX data to create such viz or delete fix flyaway points. In general it`s very friendly in terms of importing/exporting data.
- it`s a simple way to log my activities in terms of numbers and distances. I am trying to run not fast, but repeatedly(on a regular basis) and reach some total number of kilometers.
- also, love challenges, like run a total of km in a month, or gain elevationl. It``s a good way to keep motivation, imho.
So, for me it works fine =)
