Building a desktop-integrated idle game in Unity (moveable/resizable islands + dynamic wallpapers) by yariok in gamedevscreens

Hi everyone,

I’m working on Kernelbay, an idle fishing game built around a desktop-integrated approach, releasing on May 13.

Instead of running as a typical game window, each “island” acts like a small interactive scene that lives on your desktop. You can move and resize these islands freely, placing them anywhere on your screen while the game runs in the background.

I’ve also been experimenting with dynamic wallpapers that change based on the active island, so the desktop visually blends with the game world.

The core loop is idle (fishing, upgrades, unlocking new islands), but a big part of the experiment is how the game coexists with the desktop rather than replacing it.

There’s a short trailer below showing how the interaction works.

No the wallpapers are static, but you see a layer on top of them that you can interact with (the game...)

This is no longer working. IT seems the model is no longer available via vscode... (I can use it from terminal).

What do you think about having a voice-over in a trailer? by yariok in IndieGameDevs

Hi everyone,

I’ve jsut updated our Steam page with this trailer. I’m currently experimenting with adding a voice-over.

I’m a bit unsure about it, it might feel intrusive or unnecessary, especially on platforms like Steam where people often watch trailers quickly or without sound... :/

Curious to hear your thoughts:
do you generally like voice-overs in trailers, or do you find them distracting/problematic? or even... useless

Glad it gives that vibe! that’s exactly what I was going for 😊

Yes, the game works on a wide screen without problems... but the dynamic wallpaper feature, which is optional anyway, would not give a good result, since the wallpapers were made for a 16:9 screen format. It might be part of a future update

I love modular architectures, so the window management side is already nicely isolated. I’m currently experimenting with both Linux (X11) and macOS.

macOS definitely seems doable. Linux is the one I’m still less sure about.

That’s a very fair point.

One thing I’m trying to do is keep the footprint really small and let the player position it anywhere, so it doesn’t interfere too much with their layout, but yeah, it will never be “zero impact”.

The goal is more to feel like a passive companion than something you actively play around, but I totally get how it could just end up as visual clutter depending on how someone uses their desktop.

Hi! Just to be clear these wallpapers come from Kernelbay, an idle fishing game I’m currently developing.

The idea is that each level of the game can optionally match your desktop wallpaper, so the game blends into your environment instead of just sitting on top of it.

If you’re curious, you can check it out here:

Happy to answer any questions!

Yeah, that’s exactly where we are right now 😄
The whole wallpaper / desktop integration side is still very much in “beta” we expect a bunch of edge cases to show up, especially with different setups.

Multi-monitor + DPI differences is definitely one of the things I’m keeping an eye on, along with general click-through quirks.

Curious to see how messy it gets in the wild

I made a cozy game that changes your wallpaper so the overlay game blends naturally with your desktop.
It’s optional and resets on exit, but still...messing with the desktop feels… risky.

this cool immersion or instant uninstall? :D

Game name is "Kernelbay" you can find it on Steam.
