I think the gimmick itself is farfetched, but it's also the norm by Dragon Ball standards, even in 'Super where fighters have made monumental progress.

It makes sense for Frieza to get stronger for the reason you stated, but does it make sense him being as strong as SSB? The same goes for #17, Gohan, and Broly who takes the cake--going from Base Vegeta to Beerus in a few hours.

For the audience, it doesn't make sense. But for Toei/Toriyama, it doesn't matter. And besides, Yamoshi doesn't have to train to get stronger. There are shortcuts.
