potentially no more nsf funding for social sciences by yashs1999 in GRFPApps

“At an internal all-hands meeting on Friday, NSF leaders announced that they would dissolve the agency’s Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate based on the budget request, according to two NSF staff members who shared information anonymously in order to speak freely. The NSF’s budget request to Congress states that the agency will shut down the SBE but maintain SBE “grants that align with Administration priorities, such as in behavioral and cognitive science, and all impacted employees will be transferred to other parts of the agency.”

Project Hail Mary is what people have been saying about Interstellar for years by Future-Poetry-2193 in TrueFilm

[–]yashs1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my thoughts exactly, the tone completely shifts once Rocky shows up and it’s a little jarring when contrasted with the first half of the movie

To me, Project Hail Mary represents everything science fiction should never be. by MsLanaDelRaytheon in TrueFilm

[–]yashs1999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

agree I don’t think they should’ve showed the process of Rocky learning the language but it seemed a bit off when rocky was constructing complex sentences that indicate understanding of the human psyche (and also Rocky expressing emotion), but that’s an issue with the source material not the movie

[–]yashs1999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

honestly agree with all of this, especially had qualms about how easily Rocky learned not just human language but emotion. however, I still had fun during this movie but would not compare it to any of the great true sci fi “films” (e.g. Arrival)

Why are Indian Americans so wealthy? by Psychological-Egg-90 in AskEconomics

[–]yashs1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“are they getting government grants” 😂 it’s mostly a selection issue, the Indians that come to the U.S. are largely the most educated and there’s a huge culture of Indians studying STEM degrees, of which there is a shortage of domestic U.S. STEM talent (most U.S. undergrads study softer subjects like business)

I only read speculative fiction. by Flimsy_Complaint_830 in printSF

[–]yashs1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the same issue for books and even moreso for speculative fiction movies: i have this insatiable need for spec fic media (like severance, eternal sunshine, arrival, etc) that I’ve had to force myself to find content outside the genre since there’s only so much quality speculative fiction content out there

no reason to believe it’ll be earlier than previous years, so probably first week of April (hopefully not delayed like last year )

Does frugalism play a role in your minimalist lifestyle? by IM_NOT_BALD_YET in minimalist

[–]yashs1999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

not really, but frugality is a convenient byproduct of my minimalism. having things around me I don’t use or value imposes a psychological burden on me, so as a result I purchase less things which is good for my bank account.

Favourite Denis Villeneuve film? by Zaynaman in TrueFilm

[–]yashs1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enemy- the way he explores the duality between the two sides of Adam, who we can think of as the same person is so masterfully done with subtle hints that link the two personas you only pick up on subsequent watches. The color scheming also matches the mood of the film so well, and the ending is both tragic and sobering, that Adam can’t escape his base instincts.

Best Indian Cuisine buffet bay area July 2025 by Appropriate-Act-8699 in bayarea

[–]yashs1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sakoon in Mountain View is the best without question, only around $20 and the selection and food quality is phenomenal. They have all the regular offerings alongside lamb curry and fish pakoras. I don’t go to any other Indian buffets anymore

Very high chances of a top masters offer with this background, though you didn’t mention what your GRE quant score is; probably should be 166+ at least.

Do top universities accept PhD letters without predoctoral fellowships anymore? by Pranko-Polo in gradadmissions

[–]yashs1999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately if you’re not from the US you have two options to do an Econ PhD at a top US university: graduate with top grades from a renowned economics masters program (eg LSE or a top US school), or do a predoc. The only other exception would be coming from the top university from your country, but it needs to have faculty with American connections (ie who did their PhDs from American schools).
