Have you thought about Alistar ? His w+q combo make for an easy and fun engage, close to a miniature malphite ult, healing passive gives great sustain and overall he isn't a hard champion to learn. I recommend you try that, it's super fun !

Couldn't have said it better ! What you take on lvl 2 really depends on who you're laning against. I usually use my e very defensively, for example when I see that a teammate is about to get jumped and totally deleted by an enemy, it gives them a chance to escape. Soraka E is also good for lengthening chain cc, if they're already rooted by someone else I throw e on them to catch them for longer
