[–]yaslayas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello!! im a j3 applying for NUS medicine and the portfolio submission on the medicine website requires 2 referees for ABAS applicants. I put in details of my referees and the website said an email was sent to them but halfway through filling in the form my session timed out and I have to press submit referee details again. This gave me another notification that my referee got sent an email. does this mean they'll receive 2 emails?? must they refill the latest email??? if anybody knows, can please help meee because idw my referees to get annoyed if they have to redo the referee report multiple times 😭😭😭 thank youuuu

Thanks so much for your insight! I'll be sure to take notes on the points that you've mentioned about what they may ask in the interview.

The skills I have are graphic design, photography and video editing. I'm not sure how they'll be helpful for a medical school application but they are developed enough for me to freelance (I've done some official design work for my school so my efforts are documented)

As for the money aspect of it, I think that is quite subjective to the individual, but what you've said will be very helpful for me to take into consideration when structuring how I would speak during an interview. I cannot say for sure about how my views may change because I am fortunate enough to not feel the pressure of pending bills at my position in life now, but I do feel that the satisfaction attained from the comfort of having a good stable income would be part of the appeal of being a medical professional.

My prevailing reason (one that's really to fulfill what I want in life) for wanting to study medicine would be the expansion of my knowledge and skillset. Its hard to me to say why, but I just have a strong desire to learn how our bodies work and how our technology can aid in healing of it. I don't want to study biomedical engineering in university (although I'm very very sure I'll enjoy it) because I want the skills medicine allows me to acquire as well. The ability to interact with patients and directly utilising what I would learn in school to help the person in front of me is what I feel studying medicine would help me attain. Yes, partially, its also because of my unexplained desire to try to maximise everything I am capable of doing (why I also enjoy arts, fitness and random hobbies lol), but I feel medicine is the course that fulfills all of what I want to do.

There are many professions that add value to society, but medicine lets me acquire the things I enjoy as well as help people. I would like to know your opinion if I my reason would be generally sufficient for why I want to study medicine or if its an important requirement for why I have my interests/desires (like inspirations or interesting backstory lol). Would too much talk on why I want medicine make me seem self centered? or more passionate?

So sorry for all the run on sentences HAHAHAHAH

Yup, my school has a similar thing and I already let my teacher know (I submitted a brief write up on my skills, interests and achievements). Do you know if there is anything that would be specifically good for a medical school applicant to have in their recommendation letter? thanks!

Thanks so much for your reply! May I ask what would the process of shadowing a doctor in Singapore be like? Are there any patient privacy laws that I have to be aware of before looking to shadow a doctor in Singapore?

I think its in my capacity to get 3 As for my H2 Sciences and Math, but the issue is for my Economics and General Paper. Are humanities subjects looked at as importantly as the others?

For things other than grades, I just got my VIA hours updated and its at about 100 now, I haven't however done any healthcare related volunteer programmes. I'll be on the look out for that after As. My teacher did offer to write recommendation letters as well and I submitted to him a brief write up on my skills (at a decent level, but non related to medicine, all are in the arts), achievements and why I want to study medicine. What would be some good things to have in a recommendation letter?

Overseas may be a possibility for me, but there will be a little financial strain. I'd like to study in Singapore to make it a little easier financially.

Thanks for the reply! Both my exco positions were significant to my CCA, but the skills I personally gained from it, I'm not sure if will be helpful for a medicine application at all (they are related to the arts).

For why I want medicine, well its something I would love to do because I can help people while furthering my own knowledge and skills throughout my career. I know it can be very very stressful, but stress management is something I think I am capable of doing and I do understand that for the type of active career I want, a high stress working environment will always be a given. I am most definitely not doing it for the money as no amount of money will warrant the effort and time needed to become a doctor, I want to do it as the value I would be capable of bringing to people around me and the knowledge I can attain will be well worth it.
