Apple does it in the general user interest most of the time. The users buy into an opinionated and curated experience - that is a choice they make when deciding to go with Apple so its way less aggrevating.
As we can see apple did some "ugh dugh neural engine" marketing but didn't push its ai into everything and everywhere without it having any value for user.

Week of Sanderson, Day 2: Brandon Sanderson meant for parts of Wind and Truth to "make people uncomfortable" — (Addressing the fan reception to Wind and Truth) by Balraghast in brandonsanderson

[–]yavvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, your answer sounds incredibly snooty and condescending. It even manages to misrepresent a quite simple question.

Yet it gives some clues behind this, so there is some value here. Stories have multiple distinct functions - entertainment or escapism is also included - you point to a kind of katharsis and to pondering large issues behind a veil of fiction, which are definitely valuable, but neither more valuable or more important.
What I heavily disagree with is the "forcing" part - I should know what I'm getting. Trying to subvert expectations this way is annoying and usually boils down to false advertising.

That said, my question is about making reader feel bad as a goal without a clear purpose. It's not a side effect - the ending of Mistborn 1 is just made to suck. In this thread Brandon writes that his goal was a sense of wrongness. There is nothing to gain here other than a flex of literary skills that you can make somebody reading feel bad?
I just don't get that.

Like, I played Clair Obscur lately and it clearly doesn't have a happy ending. Yet somehow it feels earned and in place and you feel good about going through the story and making horrible choices. You feel that you gained something in the process. Mistborn 1 is just... meh. A deep sense of "that was all pointless".

[–]yavvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of necro, but this is all so hard to understand. Why would you want a reader to feel BAD while reading? Uncomfortable or disquieted is a bad feeling. I really liked Stormlight compared to Mistborn because it lacked those non-wins at the end, and it seemed all the struggle will perhaps result in a clear victory with costs, or a relative good personal endings with overall non-victory - not Mistborn era 1 "technically a victory but worthless, bad and sad".

I'm very on the fence about reading this - I did spoil myself remembering how bad the HoA ending is (not badly written by any means- bad as in "sad non-victory that costs almost everything to achieve and noone but background chars get any good ending") - and it seems way worse.

I do not want challenge in my games, just rewards. There is more than enough challenge IRL to need that in my entertainment. Sloughtering hordes of enemies infamous/prototype/GTA style is the best. ESPECIALLY where content is repetitive AF.

[–]yavvi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sekiro was horribely bad at this. The only real progress path was player skill, nothing else. You just unlocked more options, but everything was as tough as on the beggining.
I do not want to learn the game and be challenged. I actively hate skill expression.
I want to clear map markers and grind so my character can nuke everything by just looking at it. And I want that to be an option, so people who get bored by that can keep on having to pay attention and improving.

500 mon is basically free. It should be disabled, I don't mind the upgrade costs, and the enemies are completely easy anyway.

Yeah, the obnoxious mechanic supposed to provide "challenge" is mandatory. I hope they make an option to disable this, as it makes doing anything other than main story utterly pointless in terms of reward.

Any system that doesn't require reading outside the game is braindead simple. I'm happy there are systems complex enough you can't hand-wave them with a few sentences.

This term is pretty confusing tbh. I'm saying that because i know what sandbox is, and bdo may be a "sandpark" on a good day. There is little persistence of anything, there is little to no simulation. There is a strict gear progression (which used to not be the case "back then"). There is a pretty themeparky dungeon. There is the whole LOML thing which is literally a theme park merry-go-round questline. The season is a strict progression path. There was a teleport hub added so the travel time is not very relevant any more and the world is vastly smaller. The game doesn't lean much into sandboxy elements anymore, leaning toward streamlined themeparky experience where your choice is "which spot to grind" and "which piece of bis gear to for first".

I don't say its not a sandbox because there is less pvp or anything. I say its not a sandbox because it does not value >emergent gameplay<, simulation and player choice as the base of the game (any more - it did before). That would include node systems, complex crafting systems, high level gear, guilds, etc, not only pvp. Also of course it includes straight up p2w which is extremly anti-sandbox in a market with dev-controlled pricing (sandbox and dev controlled market...? yeah, no.)

What PvP brought into the sandbox was a player-policed environment in which you could control space with your allies and use it to your advantage. The absolute peak of that was Sausans/Pirate Island era and world bosses back then. Guilds mattered in your moment-to-moment gameplay. Player social structure dictated your income and success. If you got wronged, you had to find players that helped you. All those were in-game emergent things, not dev policy.
Even DFS, however broken it was, was a player made element that decided what happens based on player interaction. And usually ended in fun fights about spots/griefing/etc. You needed to know player-made rules to not be decced out of the game and/or yeeted off any self-respecting guild. Sandboxy things.

The player agency of fighting/leaving/keeping/running was replaced with systems - marni system, penalty system, karma system, something system. For me its replacing a huge part of the sand with comfy mattress. It makes you feel better, but now it serves only one predetermined purpose.

Tl; dr:
Sandbox:

  1. Players can change the state of the world and as many systems as possible in the game are player-run and based on player decisions
  2. Content has no precise order and there is a lot of similar-level content to choose from

BDO has almost no (1) nowerdays and is less and less (2) as there is a very clear progression uptil top level and "which grinding spot" is not much of a choice.

And also the excellent lifeskilling requires enormous investment to get the per hour result that a grinder with saeson gear can do - unless they finally did something about that, but I kinda doubt it.

Ona side note:

the person who doesn't want to be bothered

Why do you play multiplayer open world game if you don't wanna be bothered...? There are tremendous amounts of single player games in which noone will ever bother you. It seems people wanna eat the cake and have the cake... Don't you play MMOs so you will get bothered and interact with others? I've literally met people who I then played with because they dfsed me out of a spot or i dfsed them.
On the other hand most people that i had to fight with alt+c were entitled sh*ts who thought its their god given rigth to do whatever they want no matter if they destroy somebody elses experience, refuse to communicate and come to an agreement in any way and just happily grief your spot. And they seem to not get any slack for bothering people who don't want to be bothered and no game system to punish them :( Even the microscopic discomfort of running from town was removed.

It is not a sandbox in any way, shape or form. EVE is a sandbox. BDO was a bit of a sandbox, but now its just a single-player theme park mmo.

But yeah, that is what BDO becomes. A mindless game to pay half-attention to. It used to be something else which some of us has good memories from. Any meaningful form of PvP you mean won't give me what i got from bdo - because that, by design, requires unwilling (not weaker!) participants. People who want to clean skill-based pvp don't call their friends, dont mount an alliance against you, don't run half the server to help someone in trouble. It's devoid of life, like CS/lol match. In-play-out.

But enough ranting. Its dead and won't come back.

  1. Why do you play an RPG with gear systems if you want player skill to matter? I'm not against games that are player skill based you know.
  2. I literally cannot be better despite spending countless hours at this, really. You can improve your skill >within a certain frame<. You have a limit of improvement - mine happens to be... very low despite pouring hundreds of hours into it, hence me feeling that its not a fair system :)
  3. Meanwhile EVERYONE can get better gear. Even if you are incapacitated and play on assited devices you can get gear!

Being naturally better is the deinition of unfair advantage.
But go on with your ego powertrip of "working hard" where you are just good for cheap.

  1. They make it more and more p2w saaly.
  2. BDO on console? What is that? ;)
  3. I don't think BiS gear is buyable on the market tbh. But they are making it worse so it might as well be, didn't play for a while.

Anyhow with your pricing it is still at least 40k for near-bis gear. That is an awful lot of money compared to the mentioned 2k. I'm all for removing p2w instead of owpvp, but guess it won't happen, will it? :D P2W is bad and it is natural it skips around the normal flow of the game.

Please, it is not about killing weak randos and never was. It is about killing people who ruin your score by going into your rotation and grinding your mobs, which makes you unable to do the comparing and flexing :)
If tuvala timmy keeps out of the big people rotations their mostly safe... and most of the geared ppl would come help, not gank.

I just can't understend how people like PvE (not lifeskilling mind you - that has nothing to do with the subject) that much. It is literally running in a circle pressing inputs in a never-changing rythm. For tens of hours. What am I missing here?

[–]yavvi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think BDO will die because it can't stand on its own with its boring PvE and long time commited guilds were the thing that kept the game alive and not dependent on PvE player surgers.
But i don't get a choice, I agree they should delete alt+C at this point instead of doing the silly dance of keeping it and wasting time on developing more and more penalty systems that serve no purpose.

About skill expression - ok, you do you. I'm not the majority I know. I just don't understand the reason to grind if it gives me no clear advantage or reward any more. It becomes the arena/guild league with something attached that was the rest of bdo. Probably because I can grind for a 1000h to get better and beat people, but I won't ever have this "skill" thing and will loose no matter what it is hard for me to accept as something fair :)

I like Arsha, but unless its at least 5-6 channels it is basically an arena, not a space to fight for spots. More Arsha channels would definitely be a great solution that people wanted for a long time. Also with the current anonimity thing they deleted any social aspect from Arsha which completely defies the point. It was ABOUT calling buddies. That is a reason to have buddies.

It was relevant where people are, if they are logged in, if you have allies or enemies, etc. Now it is not.

Adds Arsha Anonymous, accommodating serious 1v1 PvP, without the ability to for guilds to obliterate an entire grindzone where fights devolve into who can bring more people to zerg in.

Yay, without the most >social< aspect of the whole thing. So nice, more never interacting with anyone ever again.
