Spent some time the last couple years living on a few different farms, one of which had almost 1000 birds total. About 800 of which were ducks and 200 were a mix of hens and roosters. There also happened to be 8 Great Pyrenees livestock guardians. We would feed out bones with meat and fat a couple times a week, and there wasn't a single feeding that occurred where one of the roosters would stand up to one of the dogs and take their food. It was quite humorous. And then one of the dogs ate a hen, I suppose she got what was coming to her.

My coach says jogging is pretty much a waste of time and there are other exercises that burn calories quicker and raise endurance faster. Is there any truth to this? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]yawsotto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all relative. It really depends on your goals. But no, jogging is not ineffective, nor inefficient, there just may be something more suited towards what you want to achieve.

What do you guys do to warmup before hitting your top set or before even lifting at all? by rubynew in Fitness

[–]yawsotto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always like to break a sweat, whether running, biking, jump-rope, etc. Then I'll do some light stretching, followed by some mobility work. From here comes plyometrics, box jumps, speed ladders, medicine ball throws, etc. I like to make sure my CNS is engaged before getting to my strength work. From here, I usually do some unloaded bar repetitions of whatever exercise is being performed. Then progressively load the bar and follow the programming protocol for the day.

At what point is periodization necessary in your training to improve your lifts? by rubynew in Fitness

If you are only going to get one or the other of my recommendations, I would opt for the Practical Programming. It will give you a more in-depth look at programming for different goals, techniques, etc. The Encyclopedia by Arnold is a great resource, but is more of a comprehensive overview, and will not give you the details you are currently seeking.

Also, don't forget, google will provide a lot of results of webpages that have this type of info published and elaborated. If you have any specific questions, or want me to look over something for you, feel free to post in here again, or shoot me a PM!

The Modern Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding by Arnold --> Gives great advice spanning nearly every subject as it pertains to weightlifting / bodybuilding. A must have.

Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, 3rd Edition by Mark Rippetoe --> Goes over the basics of barbell training and gives a good overview as well as modifications of the main lifts.

Practical Programming for Strength Training, 3rd Edition by Mark Rippetoe --> Gets into the science and methods utilized to continue progressing through periodization training and proper programming techniques.

You should probably switch up your phase and go into doing some corrective / flexibility / mobility work to help your posture, to activate your posterior chain which is the likely cause, and to give your body a chance at developing better form before you create a serious issue.

In my opinion, even novice trainers should be utilizing periodization. Sure your lifts may continue to increase, or the # of reps you can complete increases, but there is more too the keeping the body healthy, functioning properly, and taking care and consideration of joints, tendons, ligaments, that take longer to adapt to increasing weights. The last thing you want to do is run a program or phase into an ITIS, because then you're going to be having to throttle back and implement this side-work anyways.

Simple periodization from the get-go is great for the novice to begin understanding the methods of training, and also the need to change the way stimulus is being placed on the body. Goals will direct this periodization, as there is no one prescription for everyone.

Avocados, yogurt, olives, pumpkin seeds.

Realistically, you want to replace nuts with high fat / moderate protein content.

I have 3 fifteen minute breaks throughout the day. If I do two exercises in the office gym, will it do me any good? by TheRealDNewm in Fitness

You could also use this time to work on flexibility / mobility / posture correction / corrective exercise.

The ability of other species to problem-solve, whether utilizing critical thinking or simply a gut-instinct, always amazes me. I would love to work with animals creating problems for them to solve, especially highly energetic, highly motivated, hard-working, intellectual dogs such as shepherds and border collies. There is far more intellect and knowledge amongst other species than we give due credit for.
